PRODUCT NEWS Left: Kramer’s telehandler range is set to arrive in Australia in June blue heaven Telehandlers produced by German manufacturer Kramer, part of the Wacker Neuson group, will start arriving here in June, according to the company’s first Australian dealer Cervus Equipment will get its first shipment of Kramer telehandlers by June this year, with the dealer also considering having some more arrive by November. Late last year, John Deere signed a deal with Kramer Group for its dealers to distribute their range, with Cervus Equipment the first to sign on for distributions in Victoria and New Zealand. Cervus sales consultant Nathan Day told Farms & Farm Machinery that the company currently had two demonstration models in stock locally, and they were looking forward to having more. “We are bringing them in with full LED packages and reversing fans and automatic greasers as a basic standard package – so we are bringing in a premium machine without overspending too much,” he says. “We are bringing in a few different models – and if people want custom builds, we can go and custom build them as long as they are happy to wait for the factory to build their own.” Among the models in the lineup to come to Australia are the 3007 and 3507 – telehandlers with payloads of three tonnes and 3.5 tonnes respectively, and a seven metre maximum stack height – as well as the 4007 and 4507. “But you can also get other models like a 4.2 tonne with a 9m reach, 5t with a 9m reach and a 5.5t with a 7m reach,” says Day. “The Kramer has been around for a long time… they have got a reliable Deutz engine in them, they are German-made and they are now out on their own.” Technicians will be able to diagnose problems and provide backup parts and support in Australia remotely in case of breakdown or servicing issues. Day says he is excited for the change, saying telehandlers have long been popular in Europe. “Australia is now catching on with how important they are and how much a part of everyday farming life they are,” he says. “Especially with condensing farming down and trying to get the most out of every acre that you have got, and just people who have tractors and then use a telehandler never really use a tractor much again for front end loader work.” Left: New research shows that using a drone to shepherd sheep can be a less stressful experience for the animals shepherd’s delight Sheep are less stressed and easier to move when being shepherded by drone than by traditional means, according to a recent study Using drones instead of traditional methods to herd sheep could have health benefits for the animals involved, a new study has claimed. The study, conducted by UNSW Canberra and published by Scientific Reports, says that drones are not only an effective herding tool, but drones that emit certain sounds actually reduce stress in sheep. “What we found through this study is that the sheep had higher heart rates when they’re being shepherded by traditional means,” one of the lead researchers on the study Kate Yaxley says. “The simple act of moving them to another paddock for food is actually putting the animal under stress. “We measured the variations in their heart rates and we found it to be much lower when using unmanned aerial vehicles with appropriate approach speed and that the animals actually responded to the technology. “If we played certain sounds that allowed them to use their sensors, their aural and visual acuity, they moved a lot easier. “This is part of our research that is continuing at the moment. In addition to this, we’re focusing on the frequency of the sounds emitted as opposed to trying to emit a particular sound.” Yaxley, a visiting military fellow at UNSW Canberra, says the use of drones on farms was not a new concept but believes there has been no understanding of how sheep interact with technology and the impact on their welfare.
