Valedictorian Kira Shapiro delivers her address to graduates on June 5.
The year that redefined success
KIRA SHAPIRO
CLASS VALEDICTORIAN
Good morning friends, family,
teachers, administrators and
of course the graduating Class of
2021.
Before I begin this speech I
want to thank all of you for giving
me the opportunity to speak
in front of you today at such an
important occasion. I wanted to
talk about something that is most
likely on all of our minds today:
success.
Of course this word is going
to be talked about a lot today.
We're seniors about to graduate
high school and that is a huge
accomplishment itself. However
cliche as this might sound I want
to talk about the very definition
of the word success. When I was
little, this word had a very rigid
definition for me as I'm sure it
did for all of you as well. In order
to be quote on quote successful
you have to get the highest
grades possible, go to the best
school, make the most money,
marry at a reasonable age, have
kids and grow old, all while providing
for your family. At least
that's what society taught us.
I don't know how many of
us kept true to that definition,
however I know I did. For some
reason this was so ingrained in
my head that I didn't see another
way to be successful for
13 years of my life I have done
everything possible to be able to
stand in front of you today and
give this speech.
While I'm grateful for everything
I've accomplished and to
have the opportunity to stand
here in front of you today, this
despite popular belief did not
come naturally to me at all. In
order for me to reach my unreasonably
high goals I started to
put an extreme amount of pressure
on myself.
I put school above everything.
From dance to clubs to
my own health, school always
came first. Just as many of
you, the schedule to maintain
that success was ludicrous. In a
normal year we are expected to
go to school for six and a half
hours, stay after for a game, go
to practice or a club and then
come home later that night to do
all of our homework and studying
before getting five hours of
sleep just to do it all over again
the next day.
As much as hard work pays
off, living like this definitely
took a toll on my well being just
as it would anyone else's. As
GPAs and class ranks came out
in the beginning of junior year,
I had a sort of realization. This
obsession that I had always had
finally paid off when I saw that
Number One next to me in the
rank section. Or so I had thought.
This was supposed to be the
first step to me being successful
so really this should have been
my happiest moment. I know
it may be hard to believe but it
wasn't. I never understood why
until I heard this quote a little
while ago. It goes like this: "If
you're happy doing what you're
doing then nobody can tell you
you're not successful."
I know this probably sounds
a little bit rich coming from me
but it did come down to hearing
this quote to truly understand
where I went wrong. Through
my twisted definition of success
I had thought that if I lived up to
this impossible standard I would
finally be happy. Clearly that
was not the case. In fact it was
the exact opposite. Some immeasurable
standard of success
can never complete happiness.
I had to learn this the hard way.
All of our grades, GPAs, test
scores, they are quantifiable
amounts. They are standards
created by society just like the
definitions of success. Something
as abstract as happiness
and success cannot be created
by these numbers. It is happiness
itself that truly shows how
successful one is. I would have
never thought that just a simple
quote would change my outlook
on life but it has.
When we look back on this
graduation our class will be
made up of entirely different
people. Wherever your path will
take you, whether it's moving to
a different state or an entirely
new career choice than the one
you have planned now, I can
only hope this small moment in
time will have some impact on
you all. With the year we have
gone through this class has never
been more prepared for what is
to come. I can't wait to see where
our lives take us.
So to our future doctors, lawyers,
teachers or anything else
that the Class of 2021 will become,
if you take only one thing
from this speech focus on your
happiness because that is the
true way to success. I hope the
class will one day look back and
realize we have not only become
successful, but we are unconditionally
happy with our lives.
Thank you for listening to my
speech and congratulations to
the Class of 2021.
Congratulations to the Class of 2021!
Wishing you the best of luck!
Veterans Memorial High School Class Essayist Olivia Barrette delivers her speech to graduates.
We are lucky to be here today
Olivia Barrete
Class essayist
It is an honor today to welcome
you all to our commencement
ceremony. I never thought
this day would come so soon.
Time really does fly. It feels like
just yesterday that I was walking
into this school as a freshman,
getting lost trying to find my
way to AP bio.
I would like to take a moment
to thank all of our friends, family
and teachers for the unwavering
support and guidance they
have provided us for the last four
years. Without them today truly
would not be possible. I would
also like to give a special thanks
to my mom for all of her sacrifices,
hard work and support
throughout this journey with me.
She truly is my inspiration and
my hero.
I want to start off by saying
that I know this is not the senior
year that we had hoped for. Senior
year is something that you
look forward to for the majority
of your teenage years leading up
to it. This was supposed to be the
best year of high school, maybe
for some of us even the best year
of our lives.
Instead our senior year was
plagued with remote learning,
cancellations of events and mask
wearing. That being said, we are
extremely lucky to be here today
having a graduation with our
loved ones present. Something
that was unforeseen a year ago.
Although we lost a lot this past
year I personally believe that we
learned an extremely valuable
lesson that we would have never
learned otherwise. That lesson is
never taking things for granted
and living your life to the fullest.
Now I'm sure you've probably
heard it said a million times before
but nothing has put that into
perspective for us like this pandemic
has.
This past year I learned a lot
about myself. But more importantly,
I learned how valuable
some aspects of life truly are.
Things like blasting music in
the car with my friends during
a late night drive, holding my
baby cousin, hugging my family
members, saying hello to my
teachers in the hallways.
I took all of these things for
granted when in reality these
were some of the most valuable
moments in my life. I just didn;t
realize it until they were taken
away from me. People grow
up believing that money, social
status and popularity are what is
most important. This past year
has taught me that none of these
things really matter. What matters
most are the little things.
The moments we share with
the people we love that we will
never forget. I think we spend so
much time believing that certain
things are important, we forget
that it's our relationships with
others that bring us the most joy.
Moments that got us here today
with our own personal goals and
challenges in mind. But all roads
led to the same place.
We are graduating as the
Class of 2021; a class that will
go down in history. Similarly,
when we leave here today
we will likely all take different
paths in life. Some of us will go
to college, some of us will join
the workforce and some will
go to the military. But what we
will all carry with us long after
graduation is over is the resilience
and perseverance that we
displayed during this very challenging
year.
So my final message for you
all here today is do what makes
you happy as soon as you can,
for as long as you can. Because
you never know what the future
holds and you never know when
a curveball is going to be thrown
your way. The rest of our lives
are going to fly by even faster
than high school did. So do what
makes you happy and never take
for granted what you have in
front of you.
Thank you and congratulations
to the Class of 2021.
You made it,
grads. That’s
no small feat.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Bishop Fenwick awards diplomas to 145 graduates
By Steve KrauSe
PEABODY — Bishop Fenwick
High School conferred
145 diplomas during its 59th
graduation ceremony Thursday
night at Donaldson Field on
May 27.
New to the ceremony this
year was the John J. Meehan
Service Award, which was given
to a person on campus for
distinguished service. In the
future, that award will be voted
upon by the student body. This
year, however, the award was
given by acclamation to school
nurse Jennifer Faragi.
Meehan, who died suddenly
this spring, was the director of
facilities at Fenwick and previously
worked at St. Mary of the
Annunciation in Danvers.
Principal Cecilia Marquez
presented the Bishop Benedict
Joseph Fenwick Award to a
male and female student who,
in the eyes of the administration
and faculty, best exemplified
the ideals on which the school
was built. This year's winners
were Jenna Barbara Durkin and
Matthew Joseph Juneau.
The COVID-19 pandemic
and its effects were much on the
minds of the graduates Thursday
night, from the greetings by
Class President Alexa Morgan
Bettencourt to Salutatorian Samantha
Jane Cahill to Valedictorian
Meghan Leigh Cabral.
"It's especially nice to see so
many smiles as the world slowly
returns to normal,” Bettencourt
said. “We went through
something no other graduating
class has gone through.”
Bettencourt also thanked the
faculty and the administration
for "making students feel like
coming to school every day was
more than just going to class."
"We made it through a global
pandemic together," said Cahill,
who will attend Northeastern in
the fall, "and we persevered. We
did not quit."
Cahill also talked about her
theology teacher at Fenwick,
who said, "you are all unique
individuals and your own masterpieces."
That was true, she said.
"We have grown into what
we're meant to be, and we will
continue to grow into what
we're meant to be."
Cabral also touched on the
pandemic, but also talked about
relationships and connections
among people.
"We have endured the storms
of some of the most unfathomable
events," Cabral said.
"We've yelled at each other
through plexiglass dividers, and
looked at each other on computer
screens."
But, the Boston College-bound
student said, despite
the hardships of remote
learning and other COVID-19
protocols, she also talked about
her own self-discovery, as expressed
in one of the essays she
wrote when she was applying
for college.
We all, she said, "see ourselves
as the sun. Our friends
and family orbit around us …
we are the centers of our own
solar systems.
"I'm sure we all have our
own internal challenges, and internal
demons," she said. "But
you are not the only stars in the
universe. Everyone is their own
sun, hissing with hurt and glowing
with accomplishment.
"We have changed each other's
lives," she said.
Seniors were required to
choose and execute a service
project as a graduation requirement.
As a result, the class has
contributed more than 6,000
hours in community service this
year.
By Anne MArie ToBin
DANVERS — St. John’s
Preparatory School held its
111th Commencement exercises
Saturday, May 22.
Headmaster Edward P. Hardiman,
Ph.D. conferred diplomas
upon 258 graduates during an
outdoor, socially-distanced ceremony
held on Cronin Memorial
Stadium's Glatz Field.
“There are no appropriate
words that could aptly capture
what each person in this stadium
has experienced since 2:45
pm on March 12 of 2020 (due
to the Commonwealth’s state of
emergency declaration),” said
Dr. Hardiman, adding that the
class was the first since 1948 to
include students who started as
seventh graders.
“It would be foolhardy to
attempt to summarize this experience
given that each of you
has endured this public health
crisis in different ways, with different
challenges and different
outcomes," Dr. Hardiman said.
“While you each have different
gifts, talents and experiences,
you have made connections,
built bridges and overcome obstacles,
and you’ve done it beyond
just the last 435 days.
"It’s been an honor and a privilege
to learn with you and from
you throughout your time here.
Keep building, keep dreaming,
keep adapting, keep learning and
always remember that you never
walk alone. We are always with
you.”
Michael Maddison of Lynnfield
was the class valedictorian.
In his address, Maddison
urged his classmates “to have
the courage to be yourself.”
He reflected on his belief that
all new graduates need to open
their hearts and their minds.
“Who we all are is a mysterious
mixture of the passions we
choose and the identities we are
born with,” said Maddison, who
graduated St. John’s with a 4.73
GPA and will attend Dartmouth
College.
“In my experience, many passions
… are generally accepted.
Identities are a bit trickier, since
some identities are less accepted
than others. We are multifaceted,
but we are also completely in
love with the things that make
up our personalities. I leave you
all with this: Make use of (life’s)
moments — big and small —
with everyone. Our diversity is a
gift. Inclusivity is how we celebrate
it.”
Fifty-two percent of the graduates
were members of the National
Honor Society, while nine
earned commendation as National
Merit Scholars. A remarkable
37 Eagles student athletes
signed national letters of intent
to continue their sports careers
in college.
This year’s seniors represented
44 cities and towns across the
Commonwealth, including as far
south as Brighton, as far west
as Westford, and as far north as
Newburyport. There were seven
international students.
Family was a prominent
theme, as there were 28 legacy
graduates and many others with
familial connections.
“My son, Jack, graduated
here in 2017, my son, Thomas,
received his diploma today, and
my nephew will graduate next
year,” said Brenda Ligh of Peabody.
“This has been a tremendously
difficult time for so many
more people than just those
in this school community, but
having an opportunity to come
together and share in these graduates’
experience as they close
one chapter and begin another
is something that I think we all
cherish, especially because there
was no guarantee an in-person
graduation would ever happen.”
Marblehead's Sean Heffernan
and Lynnfield's Andrew Vittiglio
received Loyalty and Service
awards during a virtual Senior
Awards ceremony held earlier
this month. Salem's Noah Thomas
received the Paul “Buster”
DiVincenzo ‘50 Athletic Director's
Award. Peabody's Nicholas
Fursey received the Sean Lynch
'85 Scholarship Award, while
Maddison received a Stephen J.
Kiely ’68 Scholarship Award.
The top 5 percent of the senior
class in academic performance
(in addition to Maddison)
included Nolan Adam of
Marblehead and Mark Zolott of
Swampscott. At Friday's Baccalaureate
Liturgy, Adam was recognized
with a Campus Ministry
Award.
St. John’s Prep will hold a
limited-admission eighth-grade
promotion ceremony for the
Class of 2025 on June 3. The
event will serve to recognize the
class’s 113 students’ resilience,
leadership and focus throughout
this school year as well as
honor individual and collective
achievements.
