Apex ANS four week review
Up to week ending 6 June*
The first week of June saw a huge spike in volumes, driven
by the May half term school holiday week. Combined with
continued easing of lock down restriction and the fact that
overseas holidays are still very complicated, the British people
took to the road to have staycations and daytrips around the
country. Traffic volumes spiked, as did recovery incidents. The
total number of jobs on the ANS network was 117 thousand, an
increase of 31% vs the week before and 57% higher than the
comparable week in 2019. Suffice to say that this was the busiest
week in the last 12 months by some margin and actually busier
than any week in pre lockdown 2019. If this is a sign of things
to come during the summer, the industry needs to ensure it is
prepared. It is worth noting that we saw a significant increase in
our pinpoint requests, to help identify the exact coordinates of a
broken down vehicle.
It is interesting to note, that according to our date the median
time between job accepted and at scene wasn’t materially
impacted by the additional volumes. This is quite phenomenal
and something of which the industry can be proud.
For the entire four-week period, we saw clear trends towards
higher overall volumes (+33%), higher out of hours volumes
(+66%) and higher RTCs (+34%), whilst the number of at home
jobs barely changes (+1%) as people started using their cars
again. This is all in line with expectations, as the country is slowly
coming out of lock down. Nonetheless, it is great to see that the
industry is slowly getting back to normal sustainable volumes.
Compared to 2019, volumes were also higher than expected, but
this is driven mainly by the extraordinary volumes of the half term
week.
*For this review we will always compare the figures for the latest four week period compared to the prior four week period to achieve
the best like for like comparison.

If you look back over the last five or six issues of Professional
Recovery, you’ll see the subject of the rates paid and the cost
to operate is referenced on a regular basis. The fact that the
editor Paul Gregory sets aside a page or two to what we have
come to know is the ‘Secret Operator’ gives operators and other
stakeholders the opportunity to voice their views.
The true operating costs of a successful recovery business
never really demonstrates the value in having the correct
compliance, I know from time to time I bang on about the value a
formal regulation will bring do you operators, so why not realise
that investment and lock out those that don’t comply?
The industry’s friends and the claimed, leading trade
association AVRO, have recently made it their place to inform the
wider recovery industry of the latest Home Office consultation
on the subject of what we recognise as statutory fees legislation
The Removal, Storage and Disposal of Vehicles (Prescribed Sums
and Charges) Regulations 2008. Before we consider how the
wider industry should deal with the consultation, I think it’s worth
reminding some of the readers a handful of things that costs
the operator so much on their general overheads and direct
operating costs.
It’s important to understand how the statutory fee regulations
impacts the recovery industry and how this time around the
industry must make sure the outcome of the consultation is not
left in the dark and completely forgotten about. No, it has to
remain as a document that is regularly reviewed and tested.

There are a number of things required to make yours a
successful recovery business, to start with the basics would make
perfect sense.
Having the right premises in that prime location, with plenty
of office space, with ample vehicle storage space is a first.
Don’t forget it needs to meet your customer expectations and
the requirements of PAS 43. Customer waiting area with all the
trimmings, experienced and well-trained staff and not only
drivers but good control and administration staff, likened to the
black London Cab, someone with the knowledge, oh and have
them available on a 24-hour a day basis, in line with the working
time directive of course.
Even more obvious will be a fleet of compliant vehicles. In
today’s market that’s not just a man in a truck, no that’s having
at your disposal the full vehicle range, with crew cabs, light
transporter, heavy transporter, the ability to lift or move the
awkward and damaged car or van so at the very least you need
all the ancillary equipment, and perhaps include a lorry loader
recovery crane. All that assumes you are a light vehicle operator.
If you’ve been successful enough and have expanded your
business into heavy recovery, then you will have to multiply any
associated costs by five or more. If you have got an experienced
and fully trained commercial workforce, then best you manage
the very best of working and pay conditions because a good and
reliable heavy recovery driver is as rare as hen’s teeth, you need
to keep hold of them.
In the last issue of Professional Recovery magazine, the ‘Secret
Operator’ asked the question, Who are the fools? He, or she, yes
there are some very good female operators in recovery and let’s
face it more often than not it’s the woman in the partnership or
marriage that holds the purse strings.
Anyway, the edit, was highlighting the massive investment and
soaring costs for little reward. Insurance up even with a good
claims history and let’s not forget, how last year your operating
risk factor dropped off a cliff despite less vehicles on the road
and most of your staff on furlough. The insurance brokers out
there reading this, ‘don’t shoot the messenger’, but you the
insured should be asking your broker for a rebate, not accepting
an increase! Someone’s rubbing their hands together, singing
‘Happy Birthday’!
The fuel companies are no different, fuel price increasing,
now that’s crazy, there must be an abundance of fuel available
somewhere, because very little has been used these past 14
months with 80% of cars parked on peoples drives and little or
no traffic on the roads, Heathrow Airport a plane park, so the fuel
companies hiking their prices are also having it away.
Compliance costs
Our Secret Operator also highlighted the on-going operational
costs, something that will never go away you’ll always have your
own compliance costs from training to Inspections, routine
vehicle maintenance and PPE, these are the things that make the
true operator, a compliance level above the rest. An industry that
resists self-regulation, but you might as well have it as you’re
already paying for it! For now, that debate is done.
More often than not there is a mechanism that sets
expectation, especially within industry, now insurance, I’m sure it
will be the ABI who have a fair influence on those costs and if your
respective trade associations were to lobby the ABI over inflated
insurance, I’m sure the industry could see a reduction.
Petrol and diesel is another matter with the price of petrol
hitting its highest level for two years. RAC Foundation reporting,
Government data showing that on Monday 7th June motorists
were paying an average of 128.7p per litre for petrol across the
UK, a level not seen since June 2019, and diesel now costing an
average of 132.4p per litre, the highest price since January 2020.
Let’s not forget that during the first COVID-related lockdown
the price of petrol slipped as low as 105p per litre and diesel fell

to 112p per litre. We’re told the current increase is being driven
by demand for oil with Crude now above 70 US dollars a barrel
compared with around 20 US dollars a barrel a little over a year
ago. Apart from being shrewd with your fuel purchasing there’s no
way to control the pricing.
What is the one single factor you the operator can have an
influence on? It’s the elephant in the room - the subject of rates.
The rates the operator gets paid, and no you’ll not get my views
on the subject, good or bad, I always consider it the operator’s
commercial decision. If the rates and the operating terms work
for you, then fine do it, if not then don’t, but don’t then moan
about it.
Back in 2008 a number of operators and trade associations had
a direct involvement in the consultation around statutory fees,
at the time the only legitimate fee that could be charged for stat
removal, no matter what size of vehicle or what condition it might
be in, a car on its roof, a truck on its side spilt load whatever, was
only £105, £12 & £18 (respectively) a day storage and £50 disposal.
We had meetings with Geoffrey Biddulph and John Crozier both
of roads crime section at the home office, big changes ahead. I
know the level of detail that was submitted to the Home Office
back in 2008, as I was part of the RHA consultation working group,
with John Coupland, Mark McAllister and a few others, we costed
every part of a recovery business overhead, every penny was cost,
no matter how big or small. Drivers wage, National Insurance,
holidays, cost of bank holidays, vehicle running costs, fuel, rents,
rates, bank charges, depreciation, I don’t need to list it all.
Charging scale
We actually created a ghost company, with no stone left
uncovered, every scenario you see on today’s stat fee scenario
charging scale had an in-depth cost analysis, a cost model, as well
as a library of photographs to support the claim, so the laymen in
the DfT or the Home Office would review our submission and had
nowhere to hide.
The end result you see today, however the Home Office didn’t
follow through on part of this agreement, it was agreed to have
an annual review of the fees and the detail within the scenarios
and if they worked for the recovery industry and the general
public, not forgetting the complex logistics industry. Despite
persistent requests and calls through the Transport APPG, the
industry was continually ignored.
The recovery industry is today on the verge of a generational
change, without any facts there must be at least 50% less
recovery operators today than there was back in 2008 when the
last consultation was presented to the Home Office.
A generational change because a lot of those pioneers, and
they were, pioneers, have either sadly passed away, or retired and
left the business to the next generation, the younger generation,
educated in the world of I.T., social media and the environmental
changes with EV’s and Hybrids bring the decision making to the
‘COVID’ generation as we will come to know them.
This latest consultation, no matter how many years late it might
be is set out to seek views on proposed changes to the following
regulations and not just the fees and a percentage uplift: -
The Removal, Storage and Disposal of Vehicles
(Prescribed Sums and Charges) Regulations 2008;
The Police (Retention and Disposal of Motor Vehicles)
(Amendment) Regulations 2008 and the Police (Retention
and Disposal of Motor Vehicles Regulations 2002;
The Road Traffic Act 1988 (Retention and Disposal of
Seized Motor Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations 2008
and the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Retention and Disposal of
Seized Motor Vehicles) Regulations 2005;
The Police (Retention and Disposal of Vehicles)
Regulations 1995.
These charges will apply where the police have cause to
remove or recover a vehicle in particular sets of circumstances.
The consultation also seeks views on whether aspects of the
regulations and legislation are adequate to provide a sustainable
service for vehicle recovery.

As a recovery operator, can you truly say you are familiar
with all of those regulations, I know for sure there is only a few
operators that have read them, let alone understand them and
fully understand them and how that fits your business is critical to
a successful recovery business and to get the best results from
the consultation.
If you’re a member of a trade body or trade association then
speak to your representative and ensure you have your say, you
do not have to be a member of a trade association you can have
your own say, and I would encourage every one of you Professional
Recovery magazine readers to make your own submission, the
more detailed responses the better, the stronger the case made
for the recovery industry the better, don’t forget this is open to
the logistics and haulage and insurance sectors and there likely to
have a totally different view to you the operator.
It’s this statutory fee legislation and the pricing matrix that
creates the very foundations that supports the recovery industry,
the mechanism you can rely on to influence the industry’s
generalised cost module, from a callout fee, free mileage
(whatever that is), specialist charges and the guarantees those
finance payments are made ‘Ontime’, no pun intended.
With the consultation ending Friday 6th August 2021, the
message has to be understood there’s no guarantee this will go
the way the operator wants, now more than ever ‘Your Industry
Needs You’! It is time all step up to the plate for change, say
nothing and the industry will receive more of the same.
Finally, and to expand on the comments from that secret
operator in the last issue 342, you quote ‘£70k a pop for a new
truck’, that’s just a 7.5 tonne transporter, a 12 tonne transporter
starts at £100k and as for the price of a heavy, a very good friend
of mine Mick Jennings, Managing Director of LJ Transportation and
Nationwide Vehicle Assistance (NVA), he continues to make the
investment into keeping his fleet up to date and well maintained,
having just added a brand new
limited edition 6x2 DAF XF.530,
just shy of £300k, now that takes
some feeding and evidences
exactly why the consultation must
be taken seriously.

It’s been 10 years since Victoria
Recovery last had a new Powerlift

Here we go again, I can hear it now. I hope you can spare
some time to read this, it may change your attitude on health.

So, well-being, what’s it all about. We
have seen the TV advert’s; it’s been
brought up on courses.
We are being told to talk to someone if we
feel that we are having issues, that’s a good,
strong recommendation, but it doesn’t fit
everyone. It didn’t fit for me to start with.
Got your attention now?
I suffered, and I mean suffered with very
poor mental health for 14 years before I
realised. That’s the problem, sometimes
an individual doesn’t realise, that’s where
mates come in, colleagues, switched on
managers, who realise someone isn’t firing
on all cylinders.
What happens, how’s it caused? I have
single point PTSD and Complex PTSD.
Single point PTSD can occur because of a
single incident that is traumatic enough to
over stress the mind.
Complex PTSD can occur over a lifetime,
each event, whilst traumatic in itself, is not
severe enough to bring on PTSD.
PTSD is essentially a memory filing error
caused by a traumatic event.
It’s worth pointing out that the majority
of people exposed to traumatic events
experience some short-term distress which
resolves without the need for professional
intervention although unfortunately the
small proportion who do develop the
disorder are unlikely to seek help. Instead,
most battle on despite their symptoms and
their quality of life is likely to be substantially
reduced; evidence suggests that around
70% of people who suffer with PTSD in the
UK do not receive any professional help at
all. The disorder also impacts upon loved
ones, work colleagues and more widely too.
The defining characteristic of a traumatic
event is its capacity to provoke fear,
helplessness, or horror in response to
the threat of injury or death. Examples of
traumatic events include:
• Serious accidents
• Being told you have a life-threatening
illness
• Bereavement
• Violent personal assault, such as a physical
attack, sexual assault, burglary, robbery, or
mugging
• Military combat
• Miscarriage
• House fires
• Natural or man-made disasters
• Terrorist attack
• Traumatic childbirth (and as a birthing
partner)
• Prolonged bullying
• Childhood neglect
• Your exposure to traumatic event can
happen in one or more of these ways:
You experienced the traumatic event
You witnessed, in person, the traumatic
event
• You learned someone close to you
experienced or was threatened by the
traumatic event
• You are repeatedly exposed to graphic
details of traumatic events (for example,
if you are a first responder to the scene
of traumatic events) An event is often
referred to as a Stressor, it can be an
activity, constant pressure to perform, over

worked. Events can be a death, severe illness
(cancer) road traffic accident, financial
problems, divorce or marriage, childbirth.
We live our lives at a certain level of stress
anyway, mainly due to the modern lifestyle.
Let’s think about how you live your life.
How many hours do you work, 50-60-
more? And then when you get home, you’re
on standby, but there is also a list of jobs
to do a mile long, and then there’s the
taxi service for ballet, football, drop me in
town Dad, Dad I missed the last bus. When
do you switch off? Take the time to track
EVERYTHING you do, work and at home.
After that let see how we are doing with
any stressors we may have encountered.
A sheet of paper and a large crayon is
required, someone help the Ops manager,
on the left Zero, and the right your age. Now
think about the most stressful event of your
life and rate that up the scale 3 to 20, why
3, because you’re already at 2.
So, you can see how it builds up, but
if you have already built-up stress and
experience just one more…. It’s like a
bookshelf from Ikea, keep stacking the
books on, it starts to bow until one day, one
book to many and it snaps.

Stress is the adverse reaction people have
to excessive pressure or other types of
demand placed upon them (source HSE)
Any interference that disturbs a person’s
healthy mental and physical well being
(source British Medical Association)
Causes
Conflict
Frustration
Insecurity
Fear
Life events
Bullying, which can be verbal.
But let’s not get confused here, there is
some stress that is motivational, we achieve
goals, boost our memory, solve challenges,
How do we know we are stressed?
Increased heart rate, Feeling nauseous,
Palpitations, Perspiration, Rapid breathing
Insomnia, Lack of or increase in appetite,
Headaches, Muscular tension
Skin disorders, Tiredness, Lack of
Motivation
Another exercise, piece of paper, left side
what you do that stresses you, right side,
what others do that stresses you.
I bet the left side is empty. We get
stressed about things we do not control. If
you have no control over something, don’t
worry about it because you can’t change it.
Anxiety and a Panic Attack or
different
Anxiety, we are all anxious about something,
worried, fear, unease. Fight or flight?
Causes. Going for Job interview, snapping
a winch rope!! Sitting an exam, Hospital.
Panic Attack. An exaggeration of the
body’s usual response to fear. A rapid build
up of physical sensations which brings on,
Increased heart rate – chest pain, Feeling
nauseous, Palpitations, Perspiration, Rapid
or difficult breathing.
Most attacks last 5-20 minutes and come
on quickly, what did you do to trigger it.
How about a near miss?
Is this how you Feel? Do I have
depression?
Depression has a range of different
symptoms, and it can affect everybody
differently. The symptoms include feeling
very tearful, feeling hopelessness and
sadness, and losing interest in things you
enjoyed before. It’s also common for people
with depression to have symptoms of
anxiety.
Physical symptoms happen with
depression too – these can include feeling
tired all the time, getting poor sleep, losing
your sex drive, losing your appetite, and
feeling aches and pains.
If the symptoms are mild, you might
simply experience a persistent low mood.
It’s common to feel stressed, sad or anxious
during difficult times in your life, and a low
mood can get better after a short time,
rather than being a symptom of depression.
Severe symptoms of depression can make
people feel suicidal – as if life is no longer
worth living.
So, this is starting to get a bit long, which
hopefully shows that the topic of Well Being
cannot be covered in 5 minutes.
I started by telling you of my own
experience, a little bit more on that.
What did I experience?
What really tripped me to the edge was
a heart attack, medics administered 26
injections to control the incident, 4 2.5
mgs Morphine. You could say I was in the
brown sticky stuff. But it was after that I
first slid into Mental Health problems, for 18
months I had to sleep with the landing light
on, Anxiety. Gradually it got worse over the
years until finally I was in a mess.
Weeping, a classic symptom. This would
happen at any time, sometimes when I was
driving, and for no reason. During adverts,
I never did work that one out. The news,
mainly when Afghan was on.
Then there the sharp needle like stabbing
pains in my head, like a massive pin prick.
Part of my job at the RHA as Area Manager
was to visit members. Sometimes I just
could not go through the gate, so I blagged
it on my reports. Then the addiction got
bigger. We look to something to comfort
us. We know that, but when it’s happening
you don’t. I would often have sleep issues,
I feared going to sleep in case I didn’t wake
up. I was addicted to food, the actual
eating was when I was calmest, what I ate
didn’t matter, I could have 2 or 3 breakfasts
in a day, have fish & chips followed by a
bacon butty. None of it was fruit and veg.
I guess in a way I was lucky it was food and
not alcohol or drugs.
Other addictions can be;
Drugs, Alcohol, Sex, Gambling, anything
that gives pleasure and escape. It was
when other symptoms are, retracting from
society, I stopped attending re-unions, I
felt guilty of things that were nothing to do
with me. I started to deliver a Well Being
Specialfeature
course for the FTA. After I had delivered
about 5 or 6 it felt to close, it was dawning
on me that I was actually talking about
most of what I was feeling.
I sought help from a local charity
in Beeston nr Notts, Forces In the
Community, of whom I am so grateful, I
turned up on the doorstep, rang the bell.
I was greeted with a welcome so warm
and open. I was frozen, could not talk,
and then this massive rush of emotion and
out it came. The help came in the way of
understanding my problems and listening,
this was quickly followed by guidance.
I decided to use the NHS web site and
took the quiz to see what happened. I
submitted my results and within 2 weeks I
was attending my first appointment with a
Psychiatric Counsellor, Ah, Stigma, I didn’t
care, and rightly so, why is there so much
stigma attached.
It would be 6 months before I told my
wife, I was too ashamed. In fact, I never
told anyone. I told her in the kitchen,
we were getting tea ready, its tea where
I come from not dinner, and she said
something and once again out come the
emotions, I broke down and told her what
was happening.
I still have issues, but I manage them
now, I recognise the triggers, I take
medication, Sertraline, which also took
away the sharp pains in my head. Sertraline
boosts the production of Serotonin which
I was not making. The weeping, Anxiety,
Depression has all but gone.
If there is one thing, I would like you to
take away from reading this, someone,
just like me, might not be aware there is
something not right, its mates that will
wonder, cos mates will see the changes in
moods and behaviour.

QUALITY CONTROL
from Boniface
One of the last processes that Boniface undertake
before delivering a truck to a customer is testing, this
is undertaken to establish stability and to check the
structural integrity of the equipment and the interface between
equipment and chassis. Recently they tested a unique vehicle
built for Crouch Recovery, a Mercedes 6X6 chassis installed with
an Interstater MK6. The equipment was installed with two huge
Sepson 30,000KG winches mounted side by side on bespoke
mounting arrangement that allows the operator to observe
operations from the safety of a platform installed in front of the
winches. To provide all round recovery operation the chassis has
a front winch installed on a ballast bumper, the PTO has been
configured to allow the driver to both winch and drive up to 10
kph. Being able to undertake winching and driving simultaneously
is a significant advantage when having to self-recover, the winch
when operated independently can be deployed forward when
either more ground anchorage is required or when access to a
casualty is limited.
When testing stability the boom lifts till the front wheels are
clear of the ground, the load noted in both the closed and
extended under lift positions, the load that can be carried within
the front axle capacity is calculated. The boom capacity can
be tested with the legs at the rear deployed, an Interstater has
a capacity of 33 tonnes retracted and 9 tonnes extended, a
product that has been developed by Boniface over the last 40
years. The experience gained by Boniface over the years and their
investment in testing provides many customers the confidence to
purchase the Interstater as their recovery equipment of choice.
Further testament to Boniface’s engineering is Crouch’s
request for a bogie block device to be designed and fitted to the
Mercedes 6x6, a device that applies a load to the rear axle, this
has the effect of increasing the theoretical wheel base, during the
test the axle loads at the rear were measured while the load was
applied to the boom. The testing demonstrated a 10% increase in
stability, which significantly improves the towing performance of
what is an extremely versatile truck for Crouch.

again for
Isis Rescue
After recently taking delivery of their new Boniface 5T VLA
Isis Rescue were so pleased with the finished product and
build quality that they went ahead and ordered its little
sister the 3T VLA. This time mounted onto an Iveco Daily 70C
Crew Cab the 3T VLA has all the same working attributes as its
big brother but adapted to fit the smaller Iveco chassis in order
to maximise the payload whilst offering great fuel economy and
retaining the ability to carry multiple passengers. The chassis
has a suspended driver’s seat, air conditioning, heated electric
mirrors, Bluetooth DAB stereo and alarm all of which are standard
specification for Boniface’s stock vehicles.
The 3T VLA has an extremely low loading angle and the
bed deployment is via single button operation on the radio
remote providing ease of use and reliability day in day out. The
changeover switch on the remote control allows the operator to
switch from bed to winch operation without having to return to
the vehicle - minimizing the time on the side of the road for the
operator.
The VLA equipment was tailored to meet Isis’s requests with
LED work lights, 1.6 metre LED beacon with stop tail repeaters,
front strobes, 4 side winching points, chassis mounted wrecker
kit, illuminated stainless steel lockers and heavy duty wheel
skates which were stowed on the chassis. The vehicle also has
front strobes mounted in the grill with the rear strobes being
mounted on the tilt frame ensuring they are visible when the
bed is deployed and the rear lights are covered - a new feature
to help keep the operator safe on the side of the road. All of
these items were in addition to the standard rugged aluminum
bed, 8000lb hydraulic winch and a fully galvanized subframe and
tipping frame which provides years of rust-free operation. The
hydraulic winch can be manually adjusted via the sliding winch
carriage, allowing the operator to keep a straight line pull and
maintain good winch rope management when side winching or
loading vehicles onto the bed.

IVR and Copart UK announce
National programme of Electric
Vehicle Training
IVR approved instructors were honing their skills this week, in preparation
for a national roll out of the IVR VR27 Electric (EV) and Hybrid Vehicles
module to Copart UK drivers. The training will be delivered through a series
of 1-day courses which are due to be delivered over the next four months.
An industry leader in used and salvage car handling, boasting
17 physical UK locations covering over 432 acres of vehicle
storage, with over 30 years’ experience Copart UK handle
more than 400,000 vehicles every year, remarketing and recycling
vehicles on behalf of the insurance sector, fleet, lease and hire
companies, trade sellers and the general public.
High standards
The IVR are delighted to announce that Copart have chosen to
partner with the IVR, understanding the high training standards the
IVR VR modular system delivers for the recovery industry within the
National Highways Sector Scheme and within PAS43 it’s the right
choice for Copart.
The right decision for this forward-thinking market leader,

a number of ways to the recovery industry

complication of the issues and some irrelevant
content is out there in other courses but the
IVR provides a realistic approach to a ‘not so
new’ situation. EVs have been recovered by
this industry for quite some time, after all the
Toyota Prius is now almost 21 years old in the
UK, first launched in late 2000.”
Ultimately the IVR approved training
providers can only train those who step
forward to be trained, the VR27 is a 1-day
course which will give vehicle recovery
technicians as well as other parallel industries such as salvage, all
that they need to know to recover these vehicles safely.

Morar Motors
collect new accident unit
from Roger Dyson
It is always a pleasure to see the lads from
Scotland and on this occasion, Colin didn’t
make the journey so his two drivers travelled
down via Yorkshire, Derbyshire and the West
Midlands, working on their way down and
bringing their MAN TGM in for a repair at the
new Roger Dyson Service Centre before the
handover of their latest P230 Scania accident
unit.
The vehicle was finished in the striking Morar
Motors silver and corporate signwriting and
wouldn’t be complete without the Scottish flag
displayed on the headboard and the lockers to
compliment the vehicle identity.
This is an extremely capable accident unit
with the Amco Vebra 38 TM lorry loader
crane with remote control and five hydraulic
extensions, the Dyson Hydraloader 10,000 SLa
super low approach body and the upgraded
type 8 second vehicle lift with L arm wheel
grids.

Recovery Operator Safety Kit
for HV electric and hybrid vehicles
With the potential dangers
that high voltage electric and
hybrid vehicles can pose to
all recovery operators, Prosol UK have
utilised their experience in this field to
produce a dedicated safety kit. Supplied
in a convenient high vis’ holdall with
everything you need to ensure safe
working procedures as recommended by
IMI training and H.S.E. standards.
As Andy Coulton, MD of Prosol UK,
stated: “Understandably there is a lot
of confusion regarding how this type of
vehicle should be approached”. He went
on to say, “With the high DC voltages
involved it is essential that recovery
operators are protected and well
informed as to how these vehicles can be
made safe . . . just 110VDC can be fatal.”
Bear in mind that many current EV’s use
batteries with an output of up to 650VDC
and newer models as high as 1,000VDC.
Andy continued: “We have been
developing our product range in the
EHV (electric and hybrid vehicle) sector
for over four years now, having worked
closely with industry training and
safety professionals to gain a thorough
understanding of the risks and working
procedures required. Based on this
knowledge I can confidently say that

obligation:
Damaged Electric Vehicle Quarantine
Area Sign: A high visibility sign to warn
of dangers. Printed on a 600 x 400 x
3mm Aluminium Composite Panel and
laminated.
Vehicle Isolation Covers: Stored or
damaged EHV’s should be covered to
prevent metallic or conductive dust from
causing electrical short circuits.
Battery Spill Containment Tray - 60 Lt
capacity: Spill trays should be deployed
under EHV batteries to prevent electrolyte
escaping into absorbent surfaces including
tarmac.
In closing, Andy felt it important to
highlight the necessity for training. “If
you, or your employees are exposed
to the potential dangers of EHV’s,
recognised training is a must. For those
who are involved with making vehicles safe
(isolating the HV battery), the minimum
training qualification is IMI Level 2 - and
if working on the high voltage system, IMI
Level 3.”

Due to our rural location we do carry
out a multitude of off road recovery
jobs every year especially in the
winter when tracks become muddy or
frozen or ditches disguised by snow
or undergrowth. Numerous 3.5Ton
grocery delivery wagons get stuck trying
to deliver to remotely located houses
either on narrow tracks, or getting
either bogged down or stuck on banks
trying to turn their vehicles around, I
do have some sympathy for the drivers
on occasion as access issues are well
known to all operators and we have to
remember that the people driving these
food delivery vehicles are only mere
mortals on a car licence not experienced
roadside & recovery operators.
One of the off road jobs that really
sticks in my mind was a private one
only a couple of miles from our base in
Midhurst when a chap got his Landrover
stuck whilst instructing a course on off
road driving and this was in the sunny
month of June too!
We utilise the Unimog for bigger jobs
and burnouts in the woods of that are
difficult to access and the Landrover for
easier more straight forward jobs but
they are both really great tools in the
right hands. The roadside and recovery
operators also seem to enjoy the variety
that these jobs provide and as long as
you don’t have to travel too far then they
are a lot more fun to drive than a service
van or lorry.
