Camping 

in the Hood

It was the late morning on June 26 

and the young cadets had just arrived at 

their destination on S. Oakley Avenue. 

Featured prominently on the property 

at the Hilltop Butterfly Garden was a 

splendid playground set that caught their 

eye, but little time was allowed for play 

before they were given a mission. 

The first order of the day was to hike 

to Joedean Small’s encampment next 

door and set up their tents for the night. 

The vast majority of the group of children 

had no idea what to do. 

“It’s harder than it looks,” said 

Rakiyah Lopez, 8. “Sometimes it doesn’t 

do what you want it to do.” 

As a veteran of the overnight adventure 

that is ‘Camping in the Hood is 

Good,’ Lopez quickly pitched her tent and 

assisted the others with theirs. When a 

few of the older cadet campers arrived a 

bit later, those who experienced their 

first success were eager to lend a hand. 

Though they did not know it at the 

time, they had just passed their first test 

to become a “Love Warrior.” 

A Love Warrior, explained camp 

founder Esther Flores, is “someone who 

doesn’t give up on a mission” no matter 

how trying it is. A Love Warrior is “someone 

who doesn’t give up on others — or 

themselves — when times get tough.” 

“They are tougher, these Love 

Warriors,” she said. “They know the 

power of helping others, of making a positive 

impact on someone’s life. 

She said Love Warriors follow that 

mindset, even if all they hear are doubts 

or the word “no.” 

Flores said she has heard those doubts 

and that word throughout most of her 

life, especially when she moved to the 

area and wanted to establish health clinics 

and drop-in shelters for harmed men, 

women and children. 

Through perseverance and networking 

with other like-minded individuals, she 

says she was able to establish a non-profit 

charity called 1DivineLine2Health.

The intention of ‘Camping in the Hood 

is Good,’ she said, was to bring the great 

outdoors to children who otherwise may 

never have gotten that opportunity. 

“We wanted to provide them with a safe 

place to explore nature, to get their mind 

off of their troubles, to allow them the 

chance to be a kid.” 

She said when she announced her plans 

of making this location the overnight destination, 

the word that she heard the most 

was “no.” 

But among the naysayers were those 

who believed in this venture — who 

believed in the power of nature to heal, or 

at least inspire. 

Among those supporters of the idea was 

Fred Brophy, a sergeant with the 

Columbus Division of Police. Brophy has 

been with the division for 25 years and has 

spent the last decade working on the westside. 

He said he knows the reputation this 

part of the city has, but also knows there

Reading with 

the Firefighters

The Prairie Township Fire Department 

announced that it will once again be offering 

its Reading with the Firefighters program. 

The program, which started in 2017, 

will take place at 7 p.m. on July 13, 20, 27 

and Aug. 4. 

“We open our fire station to children 

and their families, and our firefighters 

read to them,” said Prairie Township Fire 

Chief Allen Scott. “The program takes 

place for one hour and families really enjoy 

it.” 

The program is geared toward children 

up to 10 years old. 

Reading over the summer is important 

and often children will forget what they 

learned the previous school year if they 

don’t continually read. The fire department 

wants to promote reading and 

encourage children to continue to do it over 

summer break. 

“We like to interact with the community,” 

Scott said. “This past year and a half 

we have only been able to respond to runs, 

so it is nice to be able to engage with the 

community again.” 

The books the department will read to 

children will change each week, but at 

least one week a book will focus on fire 

safety. Firefighters will also perform activities 

with children during the program. 

“We will give children a tour of the station 

and let them get a close-up look at our 

equipment,” Scott said. “Often this is the 

first time children have been in a fire station, 

so it is fun to show them around and

is more to it than a harmful perception. 

“It is a challenged neighborhood, there is no doubt 

about that,” he said. “But there is a lot of promise in 

this community, and a lot of it comes from kids like 

these.” 

Close to 20 children aged 7 to 13 participated in this 

year’s camping adventure. They come from a variety of 

backgrounds but have all faced some hardship 

throughout their young lives. 

“Some of these kids are growing up in poverty, 

growing up in single-homes, attending ‘F’ rated 

schools,” said Flores. “Some of these kids have seen 

violence, lost parents or loved ones to drugs. But look 

at them out here, smiling, having fun, finding new 

friends, and getting to explore the outdoors in a way 

they might never have been able to.” 

She said throughout the day-long adventure, lessons 

are intertwined with the crafting and entertainment 

festivities, including presentations given by public 

safety officials. Columbus firefighter Felecia 

Jackson shared home safety tips and offered encouragement 

when going after your dreams. 

“I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter and I’ve tried 

a few times to join the department but I was never able 

to until I reached my 40-somethings,” she said. “I just 

want to tell them that you can do anything you put 

your mind to and that nothing can stop you except your 

will to do it.” 

Brophy, who also served as an adult chaperone for 

this year’s outing, spoke of the importance of gun and 

street safety. He invited a few members of the bike 

unit to join and engage with the children.

Slowly the fire department has begun to open their 

doors to the community, after the novel coronavirus 

pandemic. Recently, the department held its annual 

fish fry and are now letting students ride along with 

them.

“I want these kids to know that there are other 

adults out there who are looking out for them,” he said. 

“That there are people in their corner even if they don’t 

believe in it themselves.” 

Flores said that is another aspect of being a true 

Love Warrior — believing in love even though events 

can make you question it. 

“There are bad things out there, but there are so 

many people out there willing to help. 

“And that is what this whole thing is all about — 

sharing our love with these kids and seeing them open 

up and be able to share it with someone else.” 

The department plans to host its annual Fire 

Prevention Festival as well this year. 

“It will take place Oct. 17 and will feature food 

trucks, fire safety activities for kids and a variety of 

other things,” Scott said. “It is great to have our staple 

community events again and open up our station to the 

community.” 

In previous years, the event has had an 

EMS helicopter on display, a smoke house, 

opportunities for kids to use one of the fire 

hoses and other engaging activities. 

Scott added that despite the station 

opening back up to the community, they 

are still being cautious. First responders 

continue to wear masks and other protective 

equipment when responding to calls in 

order to protect themselves from COVID- 

19. 

“Even though COVID isn’t gone, things 

are starting to feel normal” Scott said. “We 

feel it is very important to engage with the 

community and have a strong relationship, 

so we are excited to be able to put on some 

of these fun events again.”

waiting for this moment for more than a 

year: Around 9 a.m. on June 26, the 

sights and sounds of marching bands, 

fire engines, laughter and little feet scurrying 

across the pavement to pick up 

thrown candy filled portions of West 

Broad Street during the Westland Area 

Business Association’s annual 

Independence Day Parade and 

Celebration. Canceled last year due to 

the pandemic, the parade was back in 

full force as more than 25 businesses, 

high schools, dance companies and 

public safety organizations brought 

smiles, sugar, and a little sense of normalcy

At a recent meeting, the Prairie 

Township trustees discussed overtime 

within the fire department and were introduced 

to the new EMS coordinator. 

The board approved spending $50,000 

on overtime expenses for the fire department. 

The money was reallocated from the 

salaries payout to overtime. 

“We continue to have a member on 

extended illness, which is increasing our 

OT costs,” said Prairie Township Fire Chief 

Allen Scott. 

Scott also introduced the board to Rob 

Cloud, EMS coordinator for the township. 

“Rob Cloud has worked to create an 

EMS committee for the southwestern 

area,” Scott said. “Rob Cloud and the EMS 

committee have been working to reduce the 

cardiac response time by tracking key cardiac 

indicators from April 2020 to April 

2021 with great success.” 

Cloud said the township has several 

challenges to overcome to meet its EMS 

goals. 

“Currently the equipment is 11 years 

old and we only have two machines,” Cloud 

said. “New equipment and more are needed 

to keep improving and to keep up with 

technology.” 

With this in mind, Scott asked the board 

to allow the department to enter into an 

agreement with STRYKER, a cardiac monitor 

vendor. 

“This agreement will last for a period of 

10 years at a cost of $42,250 per year, or a

The Council Residential Districting 

Commission is drawing the maps that will 

create nine council districts in the city of 

Columbus. The commission is asking for 

help by completing a short survey. 

The survey asks users for their insights 

on neighborhood representation in

inform the strategy in drawing the maps, 

which will take place later this year.

Trash Summit 

The Greater Hilltop Area Commission 

will host a trash summit from 12 to 2 p.m.

The trustees also approved spending up 

to $9,000 on blacktop repair and sealing at 

Fire Station 243. 

In other township news, the board 

approved a resolution establishing ‘no 

parking’ anytime on both sides of Owen 

Street from Norton Road to Inah Avenue. 

“Mr. (Dave) McAninch has seen enough 

evidence that he believes this area of Owen 

should be no parking,” said Rob Peters, 

township administrator. “The HOA is getting 

frustrated with the vehicles not being 

ticketed.” 

The board also approved the issuance of 

yard sale permits in the township. 

“The issuance of yard sale permits was 

put on hold last March due to COVID,” 

Peters said 

Peters also asked the board to reopen 

the commercial building and zoning 

department office to the public. As COVID- 

19 numbers decrease and as more people 

get vaccinated, the township believes it is 

the right time to reopen the building to the 

public.

meeting will be held to address concerns 

about trash and illegal dumping in the 

Hilltop. The meeting is open to the public

Pet supply drive at library 

Southwest Public Libraries will host the 

Patrons and Paws pet supply donation 

drive through July 31. Patrons can bring in 

donations of pet supplies to either the 

Grove City Library or the Westland Area 

Library. The items will be passed on to 

local animal shelters. 

Weeknight park cleanup 

Friends of Westgate Park will hold a 

weeknight cleanup event from 3:30 to 5:30 

p.m. July 22. Volunteers can meet at the 

Westgate Park shelter house, 3271 

Wicklow Road in Columbus. Participants 

will help to pick up litter and maintain 

flower beds. Tools will be provided. For

The steamy weather and the threat of 

pop-up storms could not keep the 

masses away as hundreds descended 

upon Prairie Township Fire Station 241 

to devour nearly 2,000 pounds of ocean 

perch for the 71st annual Fish Fry and 

Cruise-In held on June 25 and 26. The 

beloved westside tradition, which is 

hosted by the Prairie Township 

Firefighters Association, was canceled 

last year due to COVID-19. Fire Chief 

Allen Scott, seen here (above) transferring 

the perch out of the oil and into a 

cooling basket, said it was nice to get 

back to some “semblance of normalcy,” 

but admitted he did not miss cleaning 

the oil off of his lenses. 

The Southern Rock Band (below) provided 

the musical entertainment for the

Besides the ocean perch, one of the 

most consumed items at the fish fry was 

the powdered sugar found at Joseph 

Fannell’s “Pucker Powder” booth. While 

many people went for the smaller tubes, 

Jacob Stevens, 3, managed to talk his 

father, Jordan into purchasing the 60- 

inch Mega Tube.

Historical Society is in the process of 

updating its website on Prairie Township 

and is looking for historical photographs

Easing back to pre-pandemic life 

As America is easing COVID-19 restrictions, you may feel an overwhelming 

mix of emotions about how to move forward. This is 

especially true for our older adult population, as they were highly

that eight out of 10 Covid-19 deaths in the US had been adults 65 

years and older”. Many people had experienced an unprecedented 

amount of anxiety trying to remain safe from this virus while adjusting 

to a new normal, which included working from home, no large 

crowd gatherings, and even restrictions on visitation in nursing 

homes. Now, the new normal we have all gotten accustomed to is 

changing slightly once again. While there is not one specific way to 

feel or process this change, there are tips that can help ease your 

mind and continue to make you, your family, and others around you 

feel safe and protected. 

-Establish boundaries. Although studies have reported that the 

COVID-19 vaccination is effective at keeping people safe from 

COVID-19, that does not always mean vaccinated individuals will 

be ready to take off their masks or gather in large groups. A study 

conducted by the “American Psychological Association” found that 

49% of adults reported feeling uncomfortable about returning to 

in-person interactions when the pandemic ends. Even 48% of those 

who have received the COVID vaccine report feeling the same 

way”. As we begin going back to our pre-pandemic routines, it is 

understandable to abstain from any activity you do not feel comfortable 

doing. You can continue to wear masks even if you are fully 

vaccinated, and you can limit your interactions to include a small 

pod of people. Make the best decision for your health and your associates. 

-Communicate the boundaries you have made. If you have decided 

to keep on a mask, social distance, or not gather at events, it is 

best to articulate those boundaries with the people around you, 

including family members, caretakers, or friends. Doing so will 

ensure everyone is on the same page, and others will be able to 

respect the boundaries you have made. 

-Try one activity at a time. In a blog written by Anthem Memory 

Care, the author revealed that “there is a tendency, especially with 

aging loved ones who are cognitively impaired, to grow impatient 

when they are slower to embrace change.” When an older adult feels 

comfortable to start easing back into their old routine, begin with an 

activity, they used to enjoy. Be patient with them if they decide they 

want to keep their mask on or don’t want to participate in the activity 

yet fully. 

-Keep checking in on others. People will have different circumstances 

that may make going back to everyday life easier or harder. 

Some may have experienced or witnessed loss causing PTSD; others 

may be unable to take the vaccination due to medication complications, 

having an organ transplant, or other medical conditions. Some 

could be adult caretakers of young children who are not eligible at 

this time to receive the vaccination. All these situations can cause 

extra stress associated with returning to normal. Simply checking in 

on others can help them to feel less isolated and alone. Also, having 

a conversation with them may help to come up with a solution for 

relieving stress. 

Remember, it is not a race to ease back into society. Take your time, 

make sure others know where you stand, don’t do anything you feel 

uncomfortable doing, and keep checking in on others. If you are a

Fiscal officer change made in FT 

At a recent Franklin Township board meeting, 

township resident Mike Blevins addressed the trustees 

regarding the resignation of Franklin Township Fiscal 

Officer Mary Rhinehart. 

“I had stopped and spoke to Mary on my own time, 

and I wanted to do it tonight here in this meeting since 

it is her last meeting,” Blevins said. “I want this to go 

on the minutes that I appreciate everything she has 

done for the township. I feel she tried very hard when 

she came into quite a daunting situation. I don’t think 

she was received well by people of the township. I 

think she gave it her all, and I just want to say I wish 

her nothing but the best and I hope whatever she gets 

into, she is very successful at it, and I do appreciate 

everything she has done.” 

Rhinehart resumed the position 

of fiscal officer in April 

2020 and said she would be 

resigning due to the board not 

providing her with the tools she 

needed to effectively complete 

her job. She wanted to hire 

another assistant fiscal officer. 

The board originally approved 

the budget to hire this position, 

but then rescinded it saying 

that Rhinehart’s department

At the meeting, the board also discussed the hiring 

of a new fiscal officer. 

“The board did hold an executive session in which 

two candidates were interviewed for the position,” said 

Franklin Township trustee Aryeh Alex. “I would like to 

thank both candidates, it was a hard decision because 

we felt they were both excellent.” 

The board then made a motion to appoint Nick 

Dunn as the new fiscal officer and all trustees 

approved the appointment. 

No-knock registry 

A resident asked for an update on the no-knock registry. 

“I was just wondering why everything has stalled on 

the no-knock when this has been going on for two and 

a half years,” asked Robbyne Chaney, township resident. 

“We’ve already had people in the neighborhood 

we have had to argue with to get out of the neighborhood. 

I’m not sure what the hold-up is. We did all the 

research, let you guys know what was going on, you 

were supposed to have taken care of that, and there 

has never been anything done about it.” 

Trustee John Fleshman said he supports no-knock 

registry and that the board has discussed it, but decided 

to postpone a vote. 

“I suggest we review the issue again,” Fleshman 

said.
