Future festival<br />

The future feels bright for two<br />

young Hurunui youths after<br />

attending the Festival for the<br />

Future in Wellington last<br />

weekend.<br />

Hurunui Youth Council<br />

(HYC) members Damien<br />

Durand and Millie­Jane<br />

McIlraith attended the threeday<br />

gathering packed with<br />

workshops, guest speakers, a<br />

lunch with New Zealand<br />

mayors, and the opportunity<br />

to connect with other Youth<br />

Councils.<br />

‘‘It has been an<br />

inspirational and powerful<br />

journey that Iamsograteful<br />

for. The days were packed<br />

with so much fun and<br />

learning opportunities.<br />

‘‘I can’t wait to use my<br />

knowledge and add to my<br />

community,” says Damien.<br />

“It was an amazing<br />

weekend; it has filled me with<br />

so much hope for the future.<br />

The speakers were awesome,<br />

they had perspectives that<br />

you don’t always see in<br />

Hurunui.<br />

‘‘I can’t wait to bring my<br />

knowledge back to HYC,” says<br />

Thirty pupils from St Patrick’s<br />

School Kaiapoi, and20from St<br />

Joseph’s in Rangiora, will share<br />

the stage to celebrate Jubilate<br />

in theChristchurch TownHall.<br />

Jubilate will includea<br />

lunchtime Masscelebrated by<br />

ArchbishopPaulMartin,<br />

accompanied by amassed choir,<br />

an hour­long organ recital at<br />

5.15pm andthen the two­hour<br />

Jubilate —acelebrationof<br />

Catholic music, starting at 7pm.<br />

All arefree to thepublic.<br />

Diocese, says 25 schoolswillbe<br />

representedonthe day,with<br />

choirsalready practising for the<br />

event.<br />

NewZealanders’understanding<br />

of the issue, andpassion within<br />

communities to control wilding<br />

pines before they overtake<br />

treasuredlandscapesand<br />

culturally significant sites,’’ Mr<br />

O’Connor said.<br />

The 12 successfulcommunity<br />

applications include projects<br />

throughoutNew Zealand to<br />

preventfurther spread of<br />

wilding pinesand supporting<br />

nativeplantregeneration<br />
