Stadium opens to the community<br />
Waimakariri’s new $28 millionstadium<br />
will open its doors to the community this<br />
Sunday,<strong>August</strong> 8.<br />
The 6000 metresquare MainPower<br />
Stadium featuresfour standardsize<br />
courts, and is the largestcommunity<br />
facility built in the district.<br />
Waimakariri MayorDan Gordonsays it<br />
will be an inspiration to the next<br />
generation of athletes, atremendous<br />
community asset, and provideyoung<br />
people with easier accesstohigh quality<br />
sportand activities.<br />
MainPower, <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>’s<br />
electricity distributor,was named lead<br />
sponsor latelast year, adding to asuite of<br />
neighbouring sporting facilitieson<br />
Coldstream Road, Rangiora, already<br />
bearing the MainPowername,including<br />
MainPower Cricket Oval and MainPower<br />
Hockey Turf.<br />
The Maria Andrew Park football ground<br />
is nearby, and neighbouring councilowned<br />
land is earmarkedfor tennis courts<br />
and further sportsfieldswhen required.<br />
It has taken just 18 monthstobuild, and<br />
will be managed by the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
Sport and Recreation Trust.<br />
Chief executive officerMichael Sharpe<br />
says the stadium reduces the need for the<br />
communitytotravel outside the districtfor<br />
training or competitions.<br />
‘‘We have everything hereunderone<br />
roof.<br />
‘‘The stadium givesusthe exciting<br />
opportunitytoprovide toplevelamenities<br />
which would put us in the perfect position<br />
to host regional and national<br />
competitions.’’<br />
The openingwill begin at noon, witha<br />
welcome from Te Ngai Tuahuriri<br />
Runanga, followed by speeches, ribbon<br />
cuttingand unveiling of acommemorative<br />
plaque.<br />
Throughout theafternoonthe public<br />
willbeable to enjoy tours of the full<br />
facility and demonstrations fromlocal<br />
sports club in the maincourtarea.<br />
‘‘Wewould lovefor peoplefrom allover<br />
our districttojoin us in celebrating the<br />
openingofthis wonderful community<br />
asset,’’ Mr Gordon says.<br />
The stadium will be home to arange of<br />
sports including futsal, handball, korfball,<br />
volleyball, netball, badminton,and<br />
basketball. It includes acentral fitness<br />
facility,changing rooms, coaching and<br />
meetingspaces, and seating for up to 500<br />
spectators.<br />
Mr Sharpe says the Trust wants to see<br />
wideuse of the facility by residents, fitness<br />
centre members, interest groups and<br />
sporting clubs.<br />
The stadium was designed by Warren<br />
and Mahoney Architects, and built by<br />
Leigh Construction.<br />
Citizens Advice Bureau moving to new home<br />
Citizens Advice Bureau<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
(CABNC) is moving from its Rangiora<br />
Library officetonew premises nearby.<br />
The Rangiora bureau began its days in<br />
1978 in an old bikeshop,moving several<br />
timesuntil apermanenthome was found<br />
inside the Rangiora Librarywith the<br />
Waimakariri District Councilmaking<br />
spaceavailable off the ChamberGallery.<br />
In 2011the bureau had to spend afew<br />
months at the DudleyPark Cricket<br />
paviliontoenable staff to maintain their<br />
service to clients while earthquake repairs<br />
were done in the library. Lastyear during<br />
the Covid19lockdown volunteersworked<br />
from home respondingtocalls from<br />
clients, and ateam was also partofa<br />
nationwide response in conjunction with<br />
the Ministry of Social Development,<br />
phoningolder people living alone to check<br />
if they neededsupport.<br />
The CABNC chair, Margaret Finnie,<br />
says the movetonew premisescame about<br />
after the Waimakariri District Council<br />
offeredthe opportunity to shift to amore<br />
visiblestreet front at 209 High Street.<br />
‘‘We plan to moveinto the new office<br />
during this weekend (on <strong>August</strong>78),<br />
finishing the afternoonshiftinour current<br />
Rangiora Libraryoffice this Friday<br />
(<strong>August</strong> 6) and reopeningonMonday,<br />
<strong>August</strong> 9, in our newpremises.<br />
‘‘That way there will be no disruptionto<br />
the serviceweprovidetoour clients,’’<br />
Margaret says.<br />
