PROFILE
CHIEF
EXECUTIVE
OFFICER
St. Matthew’s House
Naples, FL
OVERVIEW
St. Matthew’s House is a $21-million mission in Naples, Florida, offering faith-based, free market
solutions to poverty and addiction. The mission’s unique social enterprise model not only provides
a significant source of sustainable revenue, but it also provides those served with job training and
work experience, so they are better able to provide for themselves and their families.
St. Matthew’s House began in 1987 when a Bible study group followed the calling in Matthew
25:35-36 to bring food to a homeless population living in a nearby wooded area in Naples.
This “Task Force for the Homeless” began gathering contributions of both food and clothing,
establishing the mission’s food pantry. Throughout the years, community support helped grow the
small pantry into a multi-faceted mission focused on transforming lives.
Today, St. Matthew’s House continues to run the food pantry, along with two emergency/homeless
shelters (The Campbell Lodge and Immokalee Friendship House), addiction recovery services
(Justin’s Place Recovery Program), prison outreach (Collier and Hendry County Jail Chaplain
Service), transitional housing (Wolfe Apartments and Justin’s Village), and several social
enterprises, including 6 thrift stores, a breakfast and lunch café, a full-service catering
company, a car wash, an office rental property, and a hotel and conference center. St. Matthew’s
House serves all who are broken and come for help, without regard to their beliefs or religious
affiliation.
As a 501(c)(3), a 100% donation model allows all the administrative expenses to be covered
by the mission’s social enterprises – which enables St. Matthew’s House to direct 100% of all
donations toward the mission’s life-changing programs that continue to enrich and transform
countless lives in Southwest Florida.
St. Matthew’s House is blessed by a board of directors populated with successful and passionate leaders in business, law, ministry, and the community.
They are committed to supporting the next CEO in fulfilling the St. Matthew’s House mission. After seventeen years of dedicated service, President and
CEO Vann Ellison retired in May, and the Board is seeking a leader with a track record of leading similar-sized ministries or organizations. Above all,
they are seeking someone whose Christian faith is preeminent, and who leads with integrity, compassion, and a servant’s heart.
MISSION & BELIEFS
MISSION STATEMENT
To change lives in a spiritual environment that is both compassionate and
disciplined as we provide housing for the homeless, food for the needy and
comfort for the addicted and suffering.
BELIEF STATEMENT
St. Matthew’s House is a Christian ministry. As such, we are guided by the Bible,
which we believe is “inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, for training in righteousness; so that everyone who belongs to God
may be proficient, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NRSV).
As a faith-based organization, we affirm the call of God to all people “from
every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages” to participate in the
compassion and care of St. Matthew’s House. To view the full Belief Statement,
SERVICES AT ST. MATTHEW’S
EMERGENCY OPERATIONS
• The only homeless shelters in Collier County: Campbell
Lodge in Naples and Immokalee Friendship House in
Immokalee
• The only soup kitchen in Naples, which hasn’t missed
serving hot meals to the hungry in 33 years
• Jail Chaplain Services for Collier and Hendry County jails
that meet people when they most need it
REHABILITATION
• The Justin’s Place Addiction Recovery Program is the only
year-long addiction recovery program in Collier County
• Vocational training programs, like a culinary institute and
hospitality management instruction, prepare the jobless for
well-paying careers in Southwest Florida
• Our shelter programs take a holistic approach to serving
our residents by connecting them to medical and mental
health services and taking an individualized approach to
case management
TRANSITIONAL PROGRAM
• The Wolfe Apartments in Golden Gate City affords
residents the opportunity to live in a safe, sober environment
• Justin’s Village in East Naples is an honors community,
which rewards our program graduates with safe and sober
accommodations at a reasonable price
• Jobs: Over 100 of St. Matthew’s House 250 staff members
are graduates of the shelter and/or addiction recovery
programs—and are earning a living wage in their jobs
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
• For the working poor—who are housing insecure and/ or
in danger of becoming homeless—St. Matthew’s House
provides food assistance
• For the chronically homeless who choose not to enter
shelter programs, St. Matthew’s House provides showers
and hot meals through the soup kitchen
• Partnerships with the David Lawrence Center, Neighborhood
Health Clinic, Naples Community Hospital, Collier
County Sheriff’s Office, and the church community provide
comprehensive support for those in crisis
SOCIAL ENTERPRISES
At St. Matthew’s House, the social enterprises provide unique ways to help fund the mission and, at the same time, offer valuable job opportunities for
residents. The social enterprises now include:
6 THRIFT STORES
CATERING COMPANY
HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTER
OFFICE RENTAL PROPERTY
AFFORDABLE HOUSING
CAR WASH
LULU’S KITCHEN
(a cafe which opened to the public in October 2020).
Social enterprises cover all administrative costs, which means that 100% of every donated dollar goes to fund life-saving programs.
The social enterprises are more than a source of sustainable revenue; they help residents discover some of their God-given talents. For example, at the
Port LaBelle Inn, our program yields 400 pounds of produce a month for the Justin’s Place Recovery Program. This serves as a valuable training tool for
the program participants at Justin’s Place, because they are the ones planting and harvesting the fields.
