THE BIG INTERVIEW The 29-year-old first joined Posh in 2016, making the move from Newport County, who he had signed for as a teenager following his release from Cardiff City. He said: “It just felt like it was the right time [to sign for Peterborough]. When I was at Newport, I did my ACL and I was set to be moving on before that, but then obviously I picked up that injury. “It almost felt like a delay in my career, but at the same time I feel like everything happens for a reason, and when that move to Peterborough came around it was a no brainer for me at the time. I DON’T WANT TO GET TO MID-SEASON AND LET IT FILTER OUT, I WANT TO PLAY FOR SOMETHING. “Grant McCann was in charge and he was really good. He was young, enthusiastic and his man management was good. “I haven’t got a bad word to say about him. He helped me leaps and bounds, so I really enjoyed working under him.” Steve Evans then replaced McCann during Hughesy’s second year at the club and, despite people’s outside perceptions of him, he enjoyed his time playing for the experienced manager. “I really liked him,” he affirmed. “A lot of people probably won’t say the same, but it’s the old cliche isn’t it, if a manager likes you and you’re doing well for them then I haven’t got a bad word to say about him. He liked me, I liked him and I was fine with him. “I think people have a misjudgement of him. Obviously he’s aggressive on the sidelines, but he’s fighting for decisions to go his way, so I think the opposition players and managers hate him because every decision he wants to go his way, but he’s just passionate about football.” Neither McCann or Evans quite managed to lead Posh into the top six in League One, though, during the time PNE’s No.16 was there, and that’s something which still disappoints the defender. He added: “We definitely underachieved there with the squad we had. We had an amazing squad down there for that league. “I loved my time down there, but one thing I did miss down there was definitely getting to the Play-Offs or getting promoted.” Now playing under Frankie McAvoy at Preston North End, Hughesy is hopeful that he and his team-mates can achieve something special together. “I’m into my fourth season here now so I think I’d like to see us reach the final of a cup or really push for the Play-Offs this year. I don’t want to get to mid-season and let it filter out, I want to play for something. “I one hundred per cent think we can do it with the players that we’ve got, and there’s boys who have been here a long time. They’ve tasted that promotion when they got from League One to the Championship so I’m sure they’d be eager to do it again in a higher division.” 15
