THE ONE AND ONLY
FEATURED PROGRAMME:
GIVE UP LOVING POP
Preston North End is one of three Lancashire football clubs to have teamed up with Lancashire
County Council, Healthy Stadia and Food Active to help children cut back on sugary drinks over
the summer.
Building on the success of the first Give Up Loving
Pop programme, delivered in 2018, the Premier
League Primary Stars team at Preston North End
Community and Education Trust will encourage
primary school children to ‘Give Up Loving Pop’
and to drink more water and low-fat milk.
The programme has combined educational lessons,
which includes an egg experiment where children
analyse the effects submerging an egg into
different drinks has over a number of weeks, with
opportunities to take part in physical activity.
The Primary Stars programme engages children
through cross-curricular learning in their PE
lessons while inspiring them through the power and
appeal of Preston North End and football as a whole.
Schools Provision Coordinator Jack Mountain
said: “It’s vital that we are educating children of
the impact of excess sugar consumption through
sugary drinks - using an array of sporting examples
through classroom-based and physical activity
sessions. We hope to educate not only the children
but parents, too.
“This is the second time we have supported the Give
Up Loving Pop programme in Lancashire and we’re
confident that together we can help to tackle the
interlinked issues of children being overweight,
suffering from obesity and having poor oral health.”
Queens Drive Primary School teacher Amanda Till
added: “The GULP programme has been fantastic for
the children. Having a visitor in is wonderful in these
circumstances as well.
“Olivia [PNECET Schools Provision Officer] has been
in and she has told the children through the visual
PowerPoint about sugar.
“She’s asked so many questions, the children have
learnt so much in drinks that have different types of
sugar, the effects of sugar and their effects on the
teeth and body. The children learned about different
types of drinks and their sugar content; they have
learnt so much.”
Queens Drive pupil Elizabeth added: “We’ve poured
some water, fresh orange juice and cola into some
cups and then put eggs in to see what would happen
over time – the eggs would be the teeth for the
children.
“We had to see how sugary the drinks were and
what would happen to your teeth and if it would
be bad for you or not. We left it for a week and we
smelt it and it [the cola] was horrible, so horrible!
“I’ve enjoyed doing experiments because it’s kind
of like being active inside, having fun, whereas in
our normal lessons, we don’t really do as many
experiments in our lessons as with PNE.”
