This, along with other activities on a hot August day, was quite welcome after a long spell of no entertainment. March of the Colors, led by Bagpipes (Garry Greenshields on drums), RCMP and Veterans started the day, which led to the Cenotaph. Then Roll Call, Speeches and unveiling of the new sword on the Cenotaph. The dignitaries who delivered messages were MLA for Arm River Constituency - Dana Skoropad, Semans Mayor - Jay Holmes and Pastor James Rosso, Legion Chaplin, delivered a prayer. Nokomis fair august 7, 2021 The day continued with Silent Auction at the Legion Hall and BBQ at Jubilee Park. The Centennial committee provided Bouncy Castle for the children and a Beer Gardens for refreshment and BBQ in the evening. During the day and into the evening, there was live and recorded musical entertainment in the Park. A garden/deck basket raffle, donated by Leah Worth, was won by Donna Hawes. The Semans Library had a gift basket raffle won by Callie Greenshields and a ‘button guess’ jar prize (remote control car) won by Emmett Greenshields. The Senior’s Centre sold homemade pie, ice cream, coffee and a free freezie for the children. Joan Kempton won a 50/50 draw at the center. The children’s bike parade happened on Main Street. Despite the hot day and local harvesting, the day was a success. lmtimes.ca • Last Mountain Times • Monday, August 30, 2021 • /lastmountaintimes • @lmtimes Per-student spending rose in 7 out of 10 provinces Per-student spending (inflation-adjusted) on public schools rose in 7 out of 10 provinces in recent five-year period VANCOUVER—Despite common misperceptions, education spending on public schools across Canada increased over the most recent fiveyear period of available data, finds a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank. “Contrary to the popular narrative that education spending has been cut, spending increases in public schools exceed what was required to account for enrolment changes and inflation,” said Paige MacPherson, associate director of education policy at the Fraser Institute and co-author of Education Spending in Public Schools in Canada, Fall 2021. After accounting for inflation, per-student spending increased in seven of ten provinces. Nova Scotia saw the largest increase (9.2 per cent), followed by Quebec (7.3 per cent) and Prince Edward Island (5.1 per cent). Ontario—the province with the highest total spending—saw a real per-student spending increase of 2.8 per cent. Only Saskatchewan (-10.8 per cent), Newfoundland & Labrador (-9.9 per cent), and Alberta (-4.3 per cent) recorded decreases in inflation-adjusted per-student spending in public schools from 2014/15 to 2018/19. In terms of per-student spending in public schools as of 2018-19, New Brunswick had the highest level at $15,486 while British Columbia had the lowest at $12,513. The national average was $14,070. The study also finds compensation (salaries, wages, fringe benefits, and pensions) contributed the most to the total growth in spending nationally. “Compensation increases – including teachers’ salaries, pensions, benefits and other costs – are driving the spending growth in Canadian public schools” MacPherson said. “Before parents and taxpayers can begin to assess value for money in education, it’s crucial that they understand how much is being spent, and exactly where these dollars are going,” said MacPherson. With the increase in number of COVID-19 cases and the emergence of the Delta variant in the province, we are taking steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” said Shelley Romanyszyn-Cross, President and CEO. “The College has made the decision to implement additional mitigation measures, including mandatory masking to help keep everyone safe. Irene was born on June 30, 1923 to Malcolm and Merle Campbell of Mozart, Saskatchewan. She had an older brother Jim and two younger sisters Isabelle and Verna. Irene attended Little Quill School for grades 1 to 10, then Mozart High School for grade 11 and 12. In 1942 Irene moved to Saskatoon where she attended Success Business College. She was hired by The Bank of Montreal in Semans where she worked from August 1943 to April 1946. While working at the bank she met Wes Macomber. They were married June 18, 1946 and lived on their farm south east of Semans up until May of 2019. Irene is predeceased by her beloved husband of 73 years Wes (d 2020). Irene leaves to mourn three children Maxine (Allen) Schultz, Terry (Shaun) Macomber, Sheldon (Paula) Macomber. Along with 10 grandchildren Andrew (Michelle) Schultz, Kelly (Tom) Fesciuc, Tyler Macomber, Kevin (Lisa) Macomber, Lyndon (Marci) Macomber, Megan (Koen) Istace, Hanna (Shawn Nixon) Macomber, Alyssa, Lauren and Serena Macomber. She was also blessed with 14 great grandchildren Jacob, Hudson and Paige Schultz, Carter and Maddison Fesciuc, Penelope, Lorelai and Charlotte Macomber, Kathryn and Lawson Macomber, Sebastian and Oscar Macomber, Xander and Griffin Istace as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Irene’s life will be held Saturday August 28, 2021 at 2:00 .m. in the Semans United Church, Semans Saskatchewan. Memorial donations may be made in Irene’s memory to the Semans United Church- Box 113 Semans SK S0A 3S0.
