Pub’s bid to beat Covid
A double jab
will get you a
beverage or
food voucher
• By Susan Sandys
THE FAMOUS Grouse
Hotel has launched a
Covid-19 vaccine reward
voucher scheme to
encourage patrons to get
double jabbed against the
virus.
About 75 people took
advantage of the scheme at
the pub’s weekly club night
on Tuesday last week.
Upon showing their
Covid-19 vaccine record
card, patrons get the card
laminated and receive a $10
voucher to spend on food
and drink at the hotel.
President of the Lincoln
Club, which operates the
hotel, Lynn Townsend,
said vaccination was the
only way forward out of
the financially devastating
pandemic.
“It’s all about encouraging
people to go and get double
jabbed,” Townsend said.
NO SURPRISES for the best
$10 voucher if you have been
The past few days have
seen a bleak Covid picture
in the North Island; which
means dark clouds for us in
the south are just beyond the
horizon.
Lockdowns are brutally
tough on the hospitality
industry and the Grouse has
not been spared.
As Lynn Townsend,
president of the Lincoln
Club that operates the hotel,
says: “Covid is far more
devastating from a financial
point than the earthquake
was.”
Getting double jabbed
gives us a chance to live with
and eventually overcome
the pandemic. That means
businesses staying open and
jobs saved.
Good on the Grouse for its
SPRING HAS SPRUNG
Let the team at Airify Christchurch spring clean your heat pump
Spring has finally sprung – and while it’s wonderful to see all the daffodils
and cherry blossoms in bloom, this time of year can be brutal for those of us
with allergies and hay fever!
The Canterbury nor-wester is famous for blowing pollen all over town –
and while heading indoors can seem like the only escape from air-borne
allergens, these microscopic dust and pollen particles can actually build
up in your heat pump over time. Getting your heat pump cleaned every
12-months is the best way to keep the air circulating in your home fresh,
clean and allergen-free – and Airify Christchurch is here to professionally
tick one important job off your spring-cleaning to-do list!
THE 150th Ellesmere A&P
Show this weekend is going
ahead in a reduced format in
the face of Covid-19 alert level 2
restrictions.
Organisers are disappointed
they can’t hold the special event
in its full glory, after having to
postpone it from last year.
Yet they have managed to
salvage some of the show in
spite of alert level 2, which last
week resulted in the cancellation
of the famed Canterbury A&P
Show for the second year in a
long hours
the organising the event, and
the committee held off making
the final decision for as long as
possible.
“We are all quite saddened
by the fact it’s not happening,
it effects the whole community.
It’s the loss of a good day out,
and one of the highlights of the
year.”
No members of the public
or the association itself, unless
they are exhibitors or competitors,
will be permitted entry to
the reformated event. It will be
held over three days, Friday to
Sunday, at the Ellesmere A&P
Showgrounds at Leeston.
There will be no trade sites,
displays, entertainment or food
stalls. In addition, a number of
sections have been cancelled.
They include shearing, cooking,
hand craft, art, flowers, school
classes (sheds only), wearable
arts, Selwyn’s Got Talent and the
Top Team Challenge. A full refund
of entry fees in these classes
will be given after show day.
Sections continuing under
The clydesdale section is
incentives offered by the association,
including 150th medallions.
After dwindling entries in
recent times, there are 67 entries
this year, from throughout
Canterbury.
President Andrew Benny said
it was good to see strong entries
POLICE recovered building
materials and tools stolen in more
than 20 burglaries from a Darfield
address last week.
Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel
said officers spent Wednesday
and Thursday at the house, going
through tens of thousands of dollars
of items to link them to those
which had been reported stolen.
They included windows, doors
and other buildings supplies, as
well as tools.
“A lot of good work was done by
the officers,” McDaniel said.
“When property is stolen we need
to be able to identify it.”
This confirmation work had to
Even the earthquakes did not
compare to Covid-19, in terms of
its effect on the hotel’s operation,
he said. The historic hotel had to
be demolished and rebuilt after
damage suffered in the September
4, 2010, shake.
“Covid is far more devastating
from a financial point than the
earthquake was,” Townsend said.
Turnover was down at alert
level 2 as the hotel followed
customer social distancing rules.
At the same time, outgoings
such as rent, electricity, rates and
be done onsite, and police could
not confiscate items simply because
they looked stolen.
For this reason, McDaniel urged
people who had their tools or items
stolen from building sites to always
report it to police, providing good
descriptions. Tradespeople should
always engrave tools and record
serial numbers of relevant items.
The person suspected of the
thefts was not at the address when
the search warrant was executed. It
was an ongoing investigation, and
no charges had been laid at this
stage.
Selwyn has been hit by a number
of building site thefts in recent
months.
licenses remained. This was following
enforced closures during
lockdowns.
Townsend said the reward
voucher scheme supports the
90% For Canterbury campaign,
which aims to have 90 per cent of
Cantabrians at least partly vaccinated
by Labour Weekend.
“If this can be achieved, it must
go a long way towards convincing
the Government that we should
be at level 1,” he said.
The hotel’s new general manager,
Kurt Young, has experienced
first hand the toll the pandemic
The 37-year-old of Southbridge
was made redundant from his
role as business development
manager for DB Breweries in
South Canterbury last year after
lockdown.
Young took up a six-month job
as a farmhand on a Southbridge
ultimately get back to hospitality.
“I’m very much a people person,
I like to meet all different
walks of life, no two days are the
same,” Young said.
Young started in his new role at
the Grouse last month. He said it
was great to see so many patrons
come on board with the hotel’s
reward voucher initiative.
“We have had nothing but positive
feedback,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Lincoln
Little support for Prebbleton expansion
• By Susan Sandys
PREBBLETON residents have
come out in opposition to the
first of three plan changes which
could see the township increase
in size by 80 per cent.
The district council has
recently summarised 46
submissions received for the
Plan Change 72 rezoning
application. The period for
further submissions closes 5pm
today.
The submitters made about
190 points, the vast majority
opposing PC72. If approved,
the application, from Trices Rd
Rezoning Group, would enable
about 290 residential lots on
28ha south-west of the township,
generally located between Trices,
Birchs, and Hamptons Rds.
Submitters’ concerns included
increased traffic congestion on
Birchs, Trices and Springs Rd,
loss of rural village qualities, loss
of peace and quiet, loss of existing
vegetation and pressure on
infrastructure.
Submitters included the
Christchurch City Council,
Environment Canterbury, the
Ministry of Education and
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency. The city council and
ECan opposed the application.
The ministry opposed it in
part, referring to concerns from
Prebbleton School on Springs Rd
about traffic congestion along
the road, as well as the need for
an additional primary school.
Waka Kotahi neither supported
nor opposed the application,
but expressed concerns about
increased commuter traffic and
limited planning for public
transport.
Prebbleton Community Association
neither supported
nor opposed the application,
but expressed concerns about
increased traffic. It wanted to be
CONTROVERSY:
The first of three
plan changes
to reach the
submissions
process, PC72,
has attracted
opposition from
residents.
consulted on any developments
in the township.
“We do not want our community
split into two halves by a
major traffic corridor, which will
happen by the cumulative effect
and acceptance of developments
such as these,” association members
said.
There are two other applications
before the district council
for the Prebbleton area. They
are PC68, for 820 sections, and
PC78, for 400 sections. Submissions
closed yesterday for PC68,
while PC78 is yet to be accepted
by the district council for public
notification.
If all three Prebbleton plan
change applications were
approved in their entirety after
the submission and hearings
process, there would be a total of
1510 new homes. This would be
an increase of about 80 per cent
on the district council’s estimate
of about 1850 dwellings in the
township.
Councillor
numbers
under review
• By Susan Sandys
THE DISTRICT council will
decide whether to reduce the
number of councillors from 11 to
10 after considering submissions at
its meeting today.
Fourteen submissions were received
on the proposal, as part of its
six-yearly representation review.
The proposal includes retaining
the district’s four wards,
but changing the existing ward
boundaries, with the largest
change seeing West Melton move
into the Malvern Ward.
Eight of the submitters were in
opposition. They included the West
Melton Residents Association,
which said West Melton was more
aligned to Rolleston than Darfield,
and the Rolleston Residents’ Association,
which said it did not
support the “ splitting off areas that
look to Rolleston.”
The majority of submitters supported
a second consultation point
of retaining the Malvern Community
Board, with just three against.
This proposes the board having a
third subdivision of West Melton
added to the existing subdivisions
of Hawkins and Tawera.
The district council will consider
a final report at its scheduled
meeting on October 27.
Mixed reaction to 30km/h speed limit call
• By Susan Sandys
GERALD ST business people
have had a mixed reaction to
reducing the speed limit on the
main Lincoln thoroughfare.
Lincoln Community Committee
members have been
consulting on whether to reduce
it from 50 to 30km/h, from New
World Supermarket through to
the Liffey bridge.
While the district council is
planning a major upgrade of
Gerald St starting in 2027,
committee members are
concerned about the danger to
pedestrians and cyclists in the
meantime.
Jason
Wills, branch
manager of
Harcourts
Lincoln, said
he supported
the proposal.
However, he
believed the
Jason Wills
stretch of
road subject
to the new speed limit could be
shorter, starting at the town’s
library rather than the supermarket.
He said the Gerald and William/Robert
St intersection,
where Harcourts was located,
saw many close calls between
the speed limit reduced.
motorists, and also motorists
and pedestrians.
Daily he and other staff at the
real estate business had their
office environment disrupted by
the sound of screeching tyres
and tooting horns.
He said he himself regularly
had close calls while crossing
the road at the nearby Gerald St
pedestrian crossing, as a small
proportion of motorists did not
stop.
“You just have to be so cautious
and careful when you cross
that road,” Wills said.
Lincoln Hair Design owner
operator Diane Clark highlighted
the risk at the same
intersection, and feared there
would be a serious crash there.
She believed traffic lights needed
to be installed, rather than a
reduction in speed limit.
•HAVE YOUR SAY: Do
you think the speed limit
should be lowered on
Lincoln’s Gerald St? Keep
responses to 200 words or
less. Email susan.sandys@
starmedia.kiwi
She believed traffic lights
should also be installed at the
Gerald St and Vernon Drive
intersection.
Another
Gerald St
business
operator
close to the
Vernon Drive
intersection
said the
intersection
Diane Clark
was dangerous
as traffic
had increased in recent years.
However, he did not think
reducing the speed limit to
30km/h would help.
“Personally I think 50 is fine, if
you stick to 50,” he said.
A representative posting on
behalf of the committee on the
Lincoln community Facebook
page said consultation had
shown general support for the
30km/h proposal, as well as a
new pedestrian crossing outside
the Lincoln Library.
THE IMPACT of cannabis use
among expectant mothers is
the focus of ground-breaking
research led by a genetics expert
at Canterbury University.
Funded by the Canterbury
Medical Research Foundation,
the year-long study aims to determine
whether using the drug
during pregnancy can lead to
health effects already associated
with tobacco.
West Melton’s Dr Amy Osborne,
a senior lecturer in the
School of Biological Sciences, has
already established that heavy
cannabis use has an impact on
human DNA, with the effect
stronger in people who also
smoke cigarettes.
That research, published in
May last year, has been followed
by this US-inspired probe to discover
if a woman’s cannabis use
can alter their offspring’s DNA.
“We know smoking tobacco
during pregnancy is harmful,
but the problem is a lot of people
are using cannabis for morning
sickness because they think it’s
safe,” Osborne said.
“In the US it’s also being
used as an opioid replacement
therapy for pregnant women, a
replacement for hard and more
illicit drugs: ‘You’re not going
to do heroin while you’re
pregnant, but here, have some
cannabis’.”
Osborne said some of the
research Stateside assessing
the effects of cannabis use during
pregnancy revealed some
behavioural impacts similar to
tobacco.
Her latest study, which starts
this month, dovetails with DNA
data already available through
the Christchurch Health and Development
Study, an investigation
which started more than 40
years ago and originally included
1265 people.
Osborne has already sourced
DNA data from cannabis users
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
among that cohort, CMRF
backing worth $100,000 now
enables the Londoner and two
staff to access data from mothers
and their offspring held at the
University of Bristol in the
United Kingdom.
The UK data is vital because it
covers DNA from the parent and
their children because the CHDS
information doesn’t include the
parents.
“We can use the UK data to inform
what we’d be looking for in
the New Zealand cohort. We can
streamline what we’re looking
for so it means we’re more likely
to get a better idea of what’s happening
at the molecular level,”
Osborne said.
“In New Zealand our sample
sizes are a lot smaller so if
we want to statistically show
associations – and it’s all about
statistical power in genetics –
the more samples you have the
more likely you are to detect
something.”
Ultimately, Osborne would
like to develop a mine of information
from pregnant New
Zealanders.
“It would be amazing. We
haven’t explored that as an option
yet but depending on what
we find it may be that’s naturally
where our research goes. Then
again that requires clinicians,
epidemiologists, nurses and a lot
of people recruiting as well,” she
said.
Osborne emphasised the study
was impartial regarding cannabis.
“We’re not trying to say ‘cannabis
is bad for you or cannabis
is good for you’. It’s really important
to make the distinction
that this is basic biology, basic
biological research,” she said.
“What we’re trying to do is understand
a little bit more of the
impacts it (cannabis use) might
be having.
“Whether that’s the detrimental
impacts that come with
long-term use or whether it’s
the medicinal and therapeutic
impacts, we just don’t know.”
Osborne said while cannabis
use can be detrimental for heavy
users, it could be beneficial
regarding pain management, the
treatment of chronic illnesses
and end of life care.
“If we can put some
empirical meat on the bone
and understand a bit about the
molecular pathways that may
or may not be involved we can
start to understand a lot more,
she said.
“Without doubt, it was the
capital gain that sold us...
..but it was more than that. The value of what we could
get here - three bedrooms, a double garage,
so I could have my workshop, and a small garden
to keep Diane, my wife, happy...well, we just knew
it was the one.”
There are many more reasons why Woodcroft Estate could be
the right choice for you. Why not come into our onsite office
and discover just how much more there is to be gained in your
retirement living.
Sheep milk something to bleat about
A CHILD WITH food allergies
and dairy intolerance has led a
Kirwee couple to start milking
sheep.
Matt and Tracey Jones were
so impressed by the difference
sheep milk made for their
daughter they embarked on
their new venture and have since
created a skincare range using
the milk. The farming couple are
about to unveil a range of bottled
pasteurised milk and farm-made
cheese.
The Jones’ milk about 600
sheep on the property. Just across
from the milking platform they
have built a milk processing and
cheese-making factory.
Farm manager Juan Cavallotti
is also the head cheesemaker.
The Uruguayan dairy specialist
came to New Zealand on a
training programme but never
went back.
“The first day I was here I went
to work on a farm and I met my
actual partner. Twelve years later
we have a couple of kids and we
are getting married in February,”
he said.
Cavallotti started working for
the Jones’ three years ago. Prior
to that, he was working on dairy
farms.
“One of the things with the
cow dairy industry is that even
though you might be a great
manager you’re just one more
fish in the pond, but doing this is
something new,” he said.
Cheesemaking is in his blood.
His family, with roots in Northern
Italy, started making cheese
over a century ago.
“I have a very, very old Italian
cheesemaking book that was
what the Cavallotti used to use,”
he said.
The Jones’ have recently
teamed up with four other local
sheep milk suppliers and Cavallotti
says he expects to process
up to 3000-litres a day at the
peak of the season.
“All the milk will come to this
factory here and I will be a busy
man.”
Over the past couple of years,
Cavallotti has developed a
range of cheese. The first to go
to market will be his Havarti
and Gouda which will initially
be sold in New World and Four
Square supermarkets in the
South Island.
The pasteurised sheep milk
will be sold in 450ml bottles and
will retail for about $5, Jones
said.
“I don’t believe it’s going to
take many years before people
will buy this in preference (to
cow’s milk) because of the goodness
of the milk and the benefits
to the environment.”
The cheese and milk will be
sold under The Jones Family
Farm brand.
The couple launched their
Sabelle sheep milk skin and body
care products last year.
Selwyn Times readers continue to express opinion on the
Government’s Three Waters reform proposals
5 MARCH LINCOLN
SELLING FAST
www.selwynsounds.co.nz
With the Minister stating in
the house the case for change
is convincing and compelling
even without all the relevant
information being available – the
(misleading) advertisements
on TV and elsewhere, the nontoo
subtle attempts to bully
councils by insisting on short
deadlines and early decisions
(again without all the detail),
gives a clear impression of a
deliberate attempt to create an
air of inevitability regarding this
proposal.
The only barrier to this
Government not arbitrarily
directing change as is happening
with the health sector is local
ownership of the Three Waters
assets.
It is vital we retain not just
ownership but the management
of these services. The provision
of water services by this council
is one of the best in the country.
The Three Waters proposal
may be attractive to some other
councils who have mismanaged
theirs and see this as a way to
get off the hook, but for Selwyn
it would be a retrograde step
which once taken would be
irreversible. – Neville Farquhar,
West Melton
It amazes me that a Minister
of Government, Nanaia
Mahuta, can state “that the
case for change is proven and
compelling” when talking about
Three Waters.
This has all started when
councils have allowed their water
treatments to get behind. I am
not criticising them, as this can
happen to any councils who do
not have the money to upgrade
their systems due to slower
growth, therefore fewer rates.
It would be a far cheaper
option for the Government to
help those struggling councils
(with finance) to upgrade and
leave those who can afford it
to keep their systems running
smoothly.
The larger councils, for
example Selwyn, have proven
that they can successfully
keep their Three Water assets
upgraded – so that is what is
known as “proven”. A new idea is
not “proven nor compelling”.
My money goes into
taxes whether it is local or
government. I am happy to
pay every year to my council
for keeping our water assets
updated.
I am also happy for my
government tax to help upgrade
the smaller councils so that they
can go ahead in the future. I
am not happy with constantly
funding other councils which is
what will happen if we become
a sole business of Three Waters
that covers all the South Island.
After all, we are all different
with our land and water
resources, you cannot lump us
all and level us all out.
In a democratic country
this doesn’t happen. Margaret
Strong first game win for Leeston-Southbridge
LEESTON-Southbridge
launched their Canterbury
country cricket one-day
campaign in style, opener
Brayden Hill leading from the
Construction on Springs Ward
reserve begins
Work on a new 22 hectare park in Springs has begun.
The reserve on Birchs Road between Prebbleton and Lincoln will feature a new dog park, sports
fields, carparking, wilderness areas and bike tracks and be constructed in stages over the next
five years.
Selwyn companies McLenaghan Contracting and Johnstons Civil Limited have been awarded the
contract to build the first stage of the park, a 10 hectare area which is expected to open to the
public in spring 2022.
This will include construction of numerous off road and sealed bike tracks, complete with
jumps and a snake run. The tracks will be a similar style to those at Bottle Lake Forest or the
Christchurch Adventure Park.
There will be a dog park with a set aside area for small dogs, and three full and one half-sized
sports fields built. The sports fields will have lighting installed.
The Council will begin further consultation in the next month with parties—particularly sports
groups and clubs —that are interested in using the fields on an ongoing basis.
The reserve will be something new for the ward and the district, Major Projects Manager Phil
Millar says.
“There will be large areas of native planting for people to explore and around the park areas
we’re developing now and in the further stages of the park. With the bike track as well it will be
something special for the Springs Ward, and will be linked to the existing rail trail cycle network,
which runs along Birchs Road.”
The second stage of building starting next year will see the development of changing rooms,
public toilets and the main car park for the park, and is expected to be open in late 2022. The final
stage, an eight hectare area, will be developed in around five years time and the total cost of the
reserve is expected to be $13million.
The reserve will bring additional sports ground and reserve space to the Springs Ward, to meet
the Council requirement for park space per head of population in the ward over the next decade.
A new way to see motorbikes
With the weather warming, more people are getting out on their motorcycles on Selwyn roads – so it is
a timely reminder for drivers to be even more aware.
Most crashes between cars and motorbikes occur at intersections, or when drivers are changing lanes.
Ministry of Transport data shows drivers are at fault in 90% of crashes between cars and motorbikes at
urban intersections.
A common term within the motorcycle community is SMIDSY – “Sorry mate, I didn’t see you” – usually
the first words a driver says when they hit a motorcyclist.
Usually the reason behind this is something called saccadic masking, where the brain can’t keep up
with a quick check of the road and replaces certain eye movements with a recent memory instead,
increase the chance a driver won’t see a motorcyclist.
Motorcycles are also easily hidden in a car’s blind spots or masked by other objects, such as road signs.
Fortunately, there’s a different approach drivers can adopt to check if the road is clear and help keep all
our road users safe.
Instead of using a continuous head movement, it is recommended that a driver
pause for a fraction of a second at three points, once on the left, once straight
ahead and once on the right, which will help check your close, middle and long
distance vision. Drivers should do at least two checks before leaving intersections
or changing lanes. This stops the eyes sending incomplete images to the brain.
If every driver did this, it is estimated it could reduce the risk of car crashes by
a quarter.
Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, at every intersection, every lane
change, every time. Look twice, save a life.
To find out more visit selwyn.govt.nz/motorcyclesafety
Prebbleton roundabout completed
The new roundabout at the Shands Road and Blakes Road
intersection has been completed with the roundabout at Springs
Road and Marshs Road nearing its finish.
Along with a new roundabout the Shands Road and Blakes
Road intersection has a new, wider road and lane layout and
a separate cycle lane. Final planting and landscaping is being
completed this week.
At the Springs Road and Marshs Road roundabout the new road
layout, street lighting and paths are almost complete with work
expected to be finished in early November.
The roundabouts cost $9.7 million and were built as part of safety
improvements around Prebbleton. Waka Kotahi/New Zealand
Transport Agency funding has covered 75% of the cost.
The Council will cover the remaining cost for the Shands Road/
Blakes Road intersection, while the balance for the Springs Road/
Marshs Road intersection will be split between the Selwyn District
and Christchurch City Councils.
Faces of Selwyn – a passion for
art, cooking and education
Rita Yosef enters the recording studio in purple glasses, purple
tinted hair and smiling from ear to ear in her lilac lipstick.
When asked if her favourite colour is purple, she laughs and
says yes, before revealing that purple isn’t the only thing she is
passionate about.
Born in Latvia and raised in Israel, Rita says she has always enjoyed
art and cooking, especially a range of international dishes from
Middle Eastern, to Asian and Mediterranean cuisine.
One of her favourite dishes to cook is Kubbeh, a Middle Eastern dish
made of semolina meat dumplings in a vegetable soup or broth.
Rita joined the army at the age of 18 and met her husband 30 years
ago. They moved to Christchurch 18 years ago, with their two
children, for a change in lifestyle. There Rita established her cooking
business My Home Chef, catering and running cooking classes.
This included programmes for older population and young adults
with special needs.
“I extremely enjoy that because those young adults don’t really have
a lot of future in a way. They’re not independent to cook their own
meal – to give them those skills is extremely important. I felt like
it gives a lot of help and change even in their own family life and
hopefully for the future they will be able to get some employment.”
In March 2020, Rita and her husband decided they wanted to
build a house in Rolleston, moving into their new home in
November last year.
Since moving, Rita says she loves living in Selwyn and engaging
with the Rolleston community. She hopes to continue her community
education in the area with her cooking and painting classes.
“We have lovely neighbours from all around the world and all around
New Zealand, so it really changes the feel. I think we’ve really settled
well and we love our new home and community in Rolleston.”
Tune into PlainsFM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this
week at 5pm to listen live and hear Anya Cole, Rita Yosef and Maria
People looking start new events in Selwyn could receive funding to help make their dreams a reality.
The Council has received $35,000 in funding from Christchurch NZ and the Ministry of Building
Innovation and Employment (MBIE) for seed funding to support developing new events in the district.
New events may be events that are being held for the first time, or the development of a new element to
an existing event.
Applications are now open for people to apply for funding to support their event ideas. Events are a key
part of building and celebrating community across Selwyn, Council Group Manger Community Services
and Facilities Denise Kidd says.
“We have a lot of great events run by passionate people that add colour and fun to life in Selwyn. But we
also know there are more ideas out there with innovative people who are looking for the opportunity. This
funding is another way we can help to get their idea started and make Selwyn the great place it is to live.”
The seed funding initiative is the latest project funded by Christchurch NZ and MBIE through the
Regional Events Fund.
Funding over the past year has helped the Council develop a “Selwyn Strategic Events Plan”.
The Plan has laid out steps for the Council to better support events through marketing and a focus on
helping ‘roll out the red carpet, not the red tape’ for event organisers. It also provide guidance on the
types and timings of events the Council should be supporting to maximum the chance of achieving its
goals in supporting the community and economy.
Applications for the seed funding can be made at Selwyn.govt.nz/funding. For further information email
Southbridge School’s year 2 and 3 have planted native trees and
hunted for bugs on farmland alongside the Lee River.
About 30 pupils helped plant 400 trees as part of a Kids
Discovery Plant-Out Day, supported by Te Ara Kākāriki and
Ellesmere Sustainable Agriculture.
Teacher Simon Dakers said it had been inspiring for the pupils
to take their learning about biodiversity and sustainability
into the field. They would continue to be involved at the site,
monitoring it and calculating the presence of five native birds
species and the percentage of plant survival in the first year.
Dakers said a bug hunt with Environment Canterbury’s senior
youth engagement adviser Matt Stanford (pictured) had been
particularly successful.
Pupils included (from left) Lucy Lemon, Violet Quilter
Is your diesel summer ready?
Is your vehicle not running to it’s
full potential? Is it lacking power
or blowing black smoke?
Diesel Fix can give you a no Fuss assessment
• Large selection of service exchange pumps and injectors available
• Diesel and Petrol Injectors repairs • Diesel injection pump repairs
• Vehicle scanning and diagnostic • Compression testing
• Specialist in fuel injection and efi injector repairs
under current government restrictions, contactless
drop off, pick up and payment with paywave is available.
Maintaining your diesel engine is
vital in the summer months. Heat can
negatively impact the operation of the
engine.
Diesel engines must stay cool to operate
efficiently. If your engine has a weakness,
the hotter temperatures will speed up
deterioration and increase the risk of
faults. At best, your engine will have to be
turned off temporarily to cool it down. At
worst, head gasket failure can be caused
by excessive heat.
The increase in temperature in summer
affects the engine’s cooling system.
The coolant levels need to be checked
regularly. Flush the system using a
flushing agent and replace the coolant so
there is no risk the engine will overheat.
Changing the coolant is essential to ensure
it is not laying stagnant. This can cause
blockage, reduce airflow and prevent the
fluid from cooling properly. Consistent
airflow also prevents the engine from
overheating. Keep a close eye on the
radiator and its fins. Air matrixes can
get blocked by dirt and grease. Regularly
check and remove any blockages.
Swapping out your air filters can take
a lot of pressure off your diesel engine in
terms of performance. The more clogged
the filter, the harder it has to work, which
means the engine will run hotter as it
works overtime to provide the same
results. Replacing filters will help improve
fuel efficiency and cut down the amount
of work your engine has to do.
These are just a few steps you should
take before summer arrives to avoid any
significant and expensive repairs.
The best way to ensure that your diesel
engine is in the best condition to operate
efficiently in the hotter temperatures is
to carry out regular maintenance all year
round.
GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Use fertiliser to encourage growth
FOR MANY years, Labour
Weekend has been the traditional
time for planting out a full range
of summer vegetables and flowers.
Even though that is still a week
or so away you should have prepared
your soil ready for planting.
If not, then add in plenty of
compost or garden mix and combine
well with your existing soil
before you plant out.
There is something special
about growing your own vegetables
– watching them grow from
seed/seedling to a scrumptious
crop through your own tender
loving care might be why they
taste better.
No matter how big or small the
space available; you can successfully
grow veges in regular garden
beds, raised beds or in pots and
containers.
Tasty vegetables to plant now
include beans, beetroot, carrots,
celery, corn, cucumber, onions,
peas, pumpkin, radish, potatoes,
spinach, tomatoes and zucchini,
not to mention the great range of
lettuces available.
If space really is an issue, there
are plenty of dwarf varieties you
can grow. For plants that need
support like tomatoes or beans,
put your support stakes/structures
in place before you plant
your young plant – so you don’t
PREPARATION: Prepare well before planting. Use a good mix of fertiliser and arable soil before you plant vegetables. The
benefits will come later when it comes harvest time.
disturb the roots later on. Use old
pantyhose to tie plants to support
structures – they are soft, so
won’t damage the stem.
Summer flowering annuals
can also be planted now in either
beds or large containers. Flower
varieties to grow are alyssum,
aster, cornflower, cosmos, livingstone
daisy, lobelia, marigold,
nemesia, portulaca, petunia, statice,
salvia, stock, sunflowers and
zinnia – to name just a few.
Also, think about planting
some varieties in your vegetable
garden to help attract bees and
other beneficial insects to aid
pollination.
Fresh herbs can also now be
safely planted, such as basil,
chives, dill, marjoram, mint,
oregano, parsley, sage, tarragon,
thyme and rosemary. They can be
grown successfully in containers
or in the garden, preferring a hot,
free-draining site.
As trees and shrubs come into
spring growth use appropriate
fertiliser.
Citrus trees should be fed with
a specific citrus fertiliser.
Do not apply fertiliser in very
dry hot conditions such as the
peak of summer when plants
can suffer from heat or moisture
stress.
BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety
of living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyardbiodiversity-bugs-in-my-lincoln-section
Moth population not as extensive as in the past
MOTHS DON’T seem to be as
abundant as they once were, when
you think about how messy your
windscreen used to look after a
night drive.
Research around the world
does suggest some species have
declined for a range of reasons,
including artificial light pollution.
Regardless of this, 111 species
have been collected on our section
at Lincoln. About 70 per cent of
these are native or endemic to
New Zealand, including a large
species called Ichneutica ustistriga.
This species is one of more than
90 species in the genus Ichneutica
found in New Zealand and surrounding
islands. Ichneutica
ustistriga is a large moth with
a wingspan of 38-53mm for
females, and slightly smaller for
males. Wings are a mauvish grey
colour.
Moths are most often seen
around August, September and
October, but do fly throughout
the year.
The species is found in most
habitats including orchards, gardens,
native and exotic grasslands
and forests. Larvae are dull greyish
brown and have been reared
on several shrubs, trees and
vines including Muehlenbeckia
complexa and M. australis, Pinus
radiata and Veronica elliptica.
A recent publication in the
New Zealand Journal of Crop
and Horticulture suggests
this moth species may be an
important pollinator of avocado
in temperate regions.
Garden Mix
Our Veggie Garden
Mix has been
designed to provide
your plants with the
nutrients they need
for healthy growth
and development.
Organic Compost
Lawn Topdressing Mix
A crowd favourite, our lawn mix is ideal for
topdressing or overseeding lawns that need some
love. Suitable to sow straight into, or to pop
ready lawn on top of, this mix will create a great
growing environment for the seed to germinate.
Our Organic Compost is blended
from sustainable, natural, and
carefully selected products and is
independently certified through
BioGro. Dig compost through
your soil to boost the nutrients
and condition your area before
planting. We have had fantastic
reviews from customers who just
love our compost, and it is one
of our best sellers all-year-round!
Birdie’s Garden Beds
Birdie’s garden beds are made with high quality steel and are
built to last. Designed and manufactured in Australia, they’re
built to sustain the elements whilst still providing a great
look to your outdoor space. These beds are easy to construct
and are suitable for a wide range of plants from veggies to
fruit, herbs or flowers. Available in 3 different sizes and
colours, there is sure to be something that catches your eye.
Growing Veggies
Growing veggies is a great way to get
the whole family involved in gardening.
It is very rewarding eating meals that
have veggies you have grown yourself.
The other bonus of growing your own
vegetables is that you can grow what
you what, you know what they are
growing in, and you have confidence in
knowing they are free from nasty sprays.
1. Pick a sunny position for your veggie garden
with shelter from the wind
2. If you’re using timber, untreated is best. If using
treated timber line with black plastic.
3. Having a good quality soil is key for growing
a bumper crop. For leafy, above the ground
produce, choose Intelligro Veggie Garden Mix.
For root crops, (potatoes, radishes etc) choose
Intelligro Garden Soil Mix. A soil blend is
preferred by these plants.
4. Make sure you plant quality, in-season seedling.
5. For a successful veggie garden make sure you
establish a regular watering routine. Plants will
bolt to seed if they are stressed due to a lack
of water.
Suzuki Swift hybrid shows promise
IT’S TAKEN some time for the
Suzuki Motor Corporation to
enter the hybrid market.
Well, that doesn’t surprise me,
Suzuki has long built smallish
cars with small capacity, fuel efficient
engines, even their largest
were relative fuel misers.
That being the case, there was
no rush for Suzuki to go one step
further into the electric/hybrid
market, anyone who owns a Suzuki
will tell you how inexpensive
they are to run.
However, a hybrid has arrived
here and it comes in the form of
the Swift, and it’s fair to say Suzuki
is treading carefully, the Swift
hybrid can only be described as a
mild hybrid – don’t think Toyota
Prius, the hybrid system is more
like you would find on European
cars such as those from BMW
and Mercedes-Benz.
In mechanical terms, Suzuki’s
system utilises an electric motor
to assist the engine in a parallel
configuration, it is powered
by a lithium-ion battery that is
charged as the car decelerates and
brakes, there is no electric-only
mode of propulsion involved.
While cruising, the battery
helps power all of the additional
electrical systems such as safety
features, air conditioning, Bluetooth
and smartphone connectivity,
which means the engine
spends more of its energy driving
the wheels.
There are a multitude of display
graphics which indicate to the
driver how the system is operating
so that he or she can get
maximum fuel economy benefits.
The result of all of this is
Suzuki’s claimed 4.1-litre per
100km combined cycle fuel usage
average. That compares to
the standard Swift which has a
4.8l/100km figure, so there are
gains to be made there; however,
there is a little trade-off, the Swift
hybrid requires premium fuel
which is more expensive than the
standard 91 octane.
Nevertheless, if you are keen on
cutting down emissions and like
that bottom line of 4.1l then the
hybrid does have benefits, and
that figure is very achievable.
During my time with the
evaluation car the fuel usage
readout was constantly listing
around 5.2l/100km with around
4l/100km registering instantaneously
at 100km/h (engine speed
1900rpm).
Powering the Swift hybrid is a
four-cylinder engine of 1197cc.
It is a smooth, quiet engine
which cuts out at idle and restarts
automatically when acceleration
is requested – almost without
notice such is the refinement that
has gone into the mechanical
elements.
The 1.2-litre unit is rated at
61kW and 107Nm, the latter available
at just 2800rpm which means
there is available torque on offer,
and if you add in the moderate
SMOOTH: Design-wise, the Swift is a popular shape.
SUZUKI SWIFT HYBRID: European specification and placement of controls.
amount of electrical assistance
acceleration is more than satisfactory.
A standstill to 100km/h time
of 11.5sec is possible, along with a
7.7sec time to make an 80-120km/
h highway overtake.
Drive is carried through a
continuously variable automatic
transmission. By sheer nature of
its simplicity it, too, helps promote
fuel efficiency. The change in ratio
is seamless, providing an overall
feeling of smoothness. There is
also a sport mode should the
driver like the revs hunting higher.
I tried to replicate the type of
driving the Swift hybrid would
most likely be subjected to on a
daily basis – a suburb to city commute,
a trip to the supermarket,
and a weekend excursion. There
are no surprises here, the Swift in
all forms functions well in those
situations. The hybrid hasn’t
lost sight of the Swift concept,
an easy-to-drive model with as
much practicality as you can get
in a small car. See, at just 3.8m,
the Swift makes good use of its
compact proportions, it is a fiveseater
at a pinch.
On the open road it is quiet and
composed when presented with a
tight corner or two. The Swift sits
somewhat low at 1.5m so there
isn’t a lot of body movement, even
though the rear suspension is a
tube beam type there is enough
suspension movement to promote
• Price – Suzuki Swift hybrid
Limited, $28,500
• Dimensions – Length,
3845mm; width, 1735mm;
height, 1495mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1197cc, 61kW,
107Nm, continuously
variable automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 11.5sec
• Fuel usage – 4.1l/100km
a controlled ride even when road
ripples threaten balance.
Interestingly, the hybrid is built
in Japan but is destined mostly
for the European market. That
being the case, there are a few
little quirks the traditional Suzuki
owner would need to adjust to. For
one, the indicator and wiper stalks
have been transposed, and why
European buyers like rear manual
window winders eludes me, but
that’s what you get in Swift hybrid.
Also, the hybrid model is sans sat
nav but there is Apple Car Play
and Android Auto.
As with the entire Swift
range, the hybrid gets a fivestar
Australasian New Car
Assessment Program rating.
That’s achieved by an abundance
of safety features such as an
advanced forward detection
system which mitigates the
chance of a collision, there are
also other clever features such as
adaptive cruise control, rear view
camera and rear cross traffic alert.
The Swift hybrid lists at $26,990
in standard form, the evaluation
car was a Limited specification
model and it adds $15100, $2000
if you want two-tone paint.
These prices compare to
$20,750 for the Swift GL ($22,990
auto) non-hybrid. I guess that
difference is a matter of equation
as to whether the fuel saving
benefits going forward, outweigh
the extra cost.
Suzuki has a fairly extensive
model line-up, I will be interested
to see how far the company
takes its hybrid technology and
whether it can be adapted to
other engine configurations.
In the interim, if you want
something just that little bit different
in your Swift purchase then
the hybrid model still represents
all those traditional Suzuki values
but with the thought you are
doing just a little bit to reduce
emissions and benefiting the
environment.
To top it off, there’s also the
benefits of the local dealership’s
tempting maintenance
programme – all in all there is
lot to consider, but judging by
my experience with Suzuki all
the ingredients add up to healthy
sales down under.
Local Democracy
Reporter
- North Canterbury
Job type: Fixed term – 24 months
Location: Rangiora
Closing date: October 29, 2021
Are you an outstanding reporter looking for a new challenge and wanting
to serve your community?
Allied Press, with the support of RNZ and NZ On Air’s Public Interest
Journalism Fund, is hiring a journalist to join Local Democracy Reporting in
2022 and 2023 from the North Canterbury News office in Rangiora.
You will be covering local authorities and other publicly-funded
organisations, but also going out and talking to the people affected by
these organisations’ decisions, sharing their stories, and coming up with
your own stories on similar topics.
Your focus will be providing great public interest journalism coverage daily
throughout the North Canterbury region including Waimakariri, Hurunui
and Kaikōura. This is a multi-media role so experience in video, audio and
photography would be an advantage.
You will report to Allied Press’ North Canterbury bureau chief. You will
receive extra training and support from RNZ, and your work will be made
available at the same time to all of the programme’s media partners,
including RNZ.
This could be a junior, intermediate or senior role depending on the
successful candidate. We are looking for someone with as many of the
following qualities as possible. You don’t need all of these to apply, but you
do need to have at least two years’ reporting experience (although in some
cases we may also consider exceptional applicants with only one year’s
experience).
• Able to spot a strong story and make it come alive for your audience
• Able to meet the highest standards of accuracy, fairness and balance
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• Some knowledge of local government
• Excellent writing skills
This is a full-time role for a fixed term (through to 31 December 2023).
Assistance with relocation costs may be considered.
Applications close October 29, 2021.
Please submit your CV along with your cover letter and work samples to
Issue 4 - SPRING 2021
Kia ora
Thank you to all our essential workers,
community volunteers, emergency services
and those who went the extra mile to get
us through the most recent lockdown.
We are still a long way from being out of
the woods and the best way we can all
play our part in keeping Waikirikiri Selwyn
safe is by getting vaccinated. I’ve had my
first jab and the second one is all booked.
Jump online now bookmyvaccine.nz or call
0800 28 29 26.
Longer days are well and truly here and
it’s great to be coming home with evening
daylight. There are a lot of events planned
for the next few months and hopefully
future alert levels will allow us to enjoy the
good times of spring.
Mayor Sam
Mayor Sam at Lake Coleridge
Our response to the
Government’s Water Reform
Our Council own and control over $600 million worth of drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater
infrastructure on behalf of our community. I’m proud of the great job we do to ensure we are in the
top handful of councils across the country that have some of the most affordable drinking water and
newest infrastructure. However we still issue boil water notices for some communities and are on a
path of continual improvement. Not every council is in such a good position. We have worked with both
Labour and National governments over the last 20 years as they considered centralising water services.
The current Government’s proposal would see us join water services with most South Island councils.
Ownership of the infrastructure would transfer to the new ‘Entity D’, and ownership of Entity D would sit
with the councils collectively. We have asked the Government to pause and to allow more time for a full
conversation with our community before making the decision to proceed or not. We have committed
to formally seek your opinion before any Council decision on change. That said, the Government could
still make joining an entity mandatory regardless of our views, and it seems the case for change for New
Zealand is more compelling than the case for change for Selwyn. Either way my focus is to make sure
Waikirikiri Selwyn residents continue to receive the safe and affordable water we enjoy now, and to have
a voice in how services improve as our district grows. So as well as listening to and advocating for our
community I am also working with other South Island mayors and Ngāi Tahu to influence what any new
entity could look like, and how it would listen locally and operate well for the large and small communities of
Selwyn and the South Island.
30 Selwyn Times Wednesday October 13 2021
Building our
future generation
Mayor Sam with the People’s Choice category winners, Waitaha School.
Arts, Culture and Heritage category winners Te Taumutu Rūnanga
Awards celebrate the best of Selwyn
Every two years we recognise the outstanding
work and achievements of businesses, not-forprofit
organisations and individuals who live or
work here through the Selwyn Awards. This year
we had a record number of entries, with 104
nominations across a wide range of categories,
from volunteering and diversity to business and
tourism as well as many others. It’s hard to single
out any particular award winner as they are all
magnificent in their own way. One unifying factor
with all the nominations was the dedication and
determination with which they pursued efforts to
Selwyn Awards 2021 Gala Dinner
collectively make Waikirikiri Selwyn a better place.
I was particularly pleased to see Te Taumutu
Rūnanga named as top of the Arts, Culture and
Heritage category. Te Taumutu’s involvement in
our schools, libraries, Rolleston town centre,
Te Ara Ātea naming, design, sharing of cultural
narratives and joint decision making continues to
help us grow into our true selves. Of course the
evening would not have been possible without
our many sponsors and especially our lead
sponsor IPORT Business Park.
When I was growing up in Selwyn the discussion
amongst my friends about where we would
live was often framed around the opportunities
in other places. However much has changed
in the past couple of decades and Waikirikiri
Selwyn is now the district of opportunities. With
more internal migration than any other district in
Aotearoa, we are the rohe where New Zealanders
want to be. Our population is comparatively very
young, with 22% of us under 15 and 12% over
65. Our Council continues to support young
people in many ways, including support for youth
workers in our secondary schools. Our awesome
Youth Council is drawn from across the District
and regularly helps the Council and me with
advice and guidance on issues important to our
youth. The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs is a New
Zealand initiative through which we have secured
funding to place young people on Outward
Bound programmes to help develop their
leadership skills and confidence. We are currently
running ‘Trailblazer’ internship opportunities for
our young people to get a taste of working for our
Council. It’s great to see young people learning
about themselves and the opportunities they have
to contribute meaningfully into the lives of others.
That’s what a great community provides and why
we are committed as a Council to programmes
that bring people together, encourage curiosity
and learning, and promote people health and
exercise. I know Selwyn has changed over the
past decade and I hope that we continue to be
flexible to the changes we will need to make
tomorrow to support the development of our
awesome young people.
Wednesday October 13 2021 Selwyn Times 31
In the wake of the floods
The unprecedented floods in May wrought
havoc across Selwyn and caused financial,
environmental and emotional damage that many
are still feeling the effects of today. Council has
worked to support those whose homes were
flooded and land affected although many of
the decisions on support and work on future
prevention sit with other organisations. Our focus
has been on meeting the immediate need and
ensuring people were and are safe.
I have met with our neighbouring Mayors and
regional council Environment Canterbury (ECan),
MPI, Federated Farmers, Civil Defence, and
Waka Kotahi to look at what is being done within
our District and also at a regional level. I have
asked ECan to review their river rating area which
dictates where they complete proactive work. At
the moment this only covers the lower stretches
of the Selwyn Waikirikiri river. Many of the homes
that were flooded are located above this river
in Springfield and outside of Darfield where the
Hawkins burst its banks. The feedback I have
received is that the obvious weed problem and
growing gravel levels need attention now. Many
farmers want to be proactive in river protection
work but consent costs and conditions are
not pragmatic, and there is acceptance that
where new work is needed new charges will
be required. Stop banks in Canterbury cost
about $700 million to construct and they protect
over $110 billion in assets, which is a good
investment. ECan’s current river income is about
$3 million per year. The cost of the damage from
this one storm is estimated at $19 million, so we
are going to need a new funding model and stop
banks are not the only answer.
I took ECan councillors and river staff on a tour
of Selwyn flood damage at the time and expect
them to report back on their next steps before the
end of the year.
I was pleased that I was able to use the Mayoral
Relief Fund to help individuals and whanau whose
property suffered damage or who lost income
as a result of the floods. We’ve already paid out
$30,000, and we will accept applications until the
fund is exhausted. If you’ve suffered flood damage
and have not yet applied for support please email
us at mayoral.relief.fund@selwyn.govt.nz.
amazing day for the whole family. I’m pleased
to see work commence on the Kirwee and
provide for our communities.
Councillor
Spring is here the
blossoms and daffodils
signal the change of
seasons, as we know
change is constant and it often sneaks
up on us. At this time there are many
proposed changes in the wind, from speed
limit bylaws, the representation review and
private plan changes to the much more
far reaching local government, health
and 3 waters reforms. It is important that
you are able to have a voice by making
a submission to any proposed changes.
Thank you to those who submitted to the
speed limit bylaw and representation review
consultation. We await further information
regarding the central government driven
reforms and how you have a voice on them.
News in Brief
Local elections –
what’s changing?
Our new Toka Hāpai Health Hub is bringing new health services to
Selwyn. Toka can be translated as a rock or anchor. Hāpai means
to lift up, to rise, to raise. In a sense, Toka Hāpai is much like a
springboard in our universal quest for wellness and wellbeing.
Te Ara Ātea is Selwyn’s newest library and cultural space due to
open early next year. It is the anchor building of the new Rolleston
town centre which we expect to be a vibrant and engaging retail
and community destination for Selwyn and our visitors to enjoy.
In response to your calls we consulted our communities about
reducing speeds on 27 of our roads. Initial feedback suggests
that many of these speed reductions will be adopted and you can
look forward to new signs going up in the coming months.
We are still behind our desired timeframes for processing
building consents. We have been processing about 250
building consents every month for the past year, with a high of
372 in March. New staff and innovative solutions, such as the
partnership programme with our industry partners, will help bring
times back in line with expectations.
Our Council has concluded consultation about changing Selwyn’s
electoral boundaries to ensure residents have fair and effective
representation at local elections next year. Final decision is due
next month.
In November I’ll be riding 185km across Selwyn from Arthur’s
Pass to Taumutu, raising awareness of men’s health issues and
enjoying the beautiful scenery of our district along the way. It
would be great if you could support the cause. Keep an eye on
my Facebook page to find out how.
If you have any questions or feedback please contact me at
