POLICE recovered building
materials and tools stolen in more
than 20 burglaries from a Darfield
address last week.
Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel
said officers spent Wednesday
and Thursday at the house, going
through tens of thousands of dollars
of items to link them to those
which had been reported stolen.
They included windows, doors
and other buildings supplies, as
well as tools.
“A lot of good work was done by
the officers,” McDaniel said.
“When property is stolen we need
to be able to identify it.”
Even the earthquakes did not
compare to Covid-19, in terms of
its effect on the hotel’s operation,
he said. The historic hotel had to
be demolished and rebuilt after
damage suffered in the September
4, 2010, shake.
“Covid is far more devastating
from a financial point than the
earthquake was,” Townsend said.
Turnover was down at alert
level 2 as the hotel followed
customer social distancing rules.
At the same time, outgoings
such as rent, electricity, rates and
be done onsite, and police could
not confiscate items simply because
they looked stolen.
For this reason, McDaniel urged
people who had their tools or items
stolen from building sites to always
report it to police, providing good
descriptions. Tradespeople should
always engrave tools and record
serial numbers of relevant items.
The person suspected of the
thefts was not at the address when
the search warrant was executed. It
was an ongoing investigation, and
no charges had been laid at this
stage.
Selwyn has been hit by a number
of building site thefts in recent
months.
licenses remained. This was following
enforced closures during
lockdowns.
Townsend said the reward
voucher scheme supports the
90% For Canterbury campaign,
which aims to have 90 per cent of
Cantabrians at least partly vaccinated
by Labour Weekend.
“If this can be achieved, it must
go a long way towards convincing
the Government that we should
be at level 1,” he said.
The hotel’s new general manager,
Kurt Young, has experienced
first hand the toll the pandemic
Helping Canterbury reach 90 per cent vaccination target
has had on the hospitality industry.
The 37-year-old of Southbridge
was made redundant from his
role as business development
manager for DB Breweries in
South Canterbury last year after
lockdown.
Young took up a six-month job
as a farmhand on a Southbridge
sheep and crop farm, hoping to
ultimately get back to hospitality.
“I’m very much a people person,
I like to meet all different
walks of life, no two days are the
same,” Young said.
Young started in his new role at
the Grouse last month. He said it
was great to see so many patrons
come on board with the hotel’s
reward voucher initiative.
“We have had nothing but positive
feedback,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Lincoln
Club has a new life member –
Jock Baylis. Baylis was awarded
life membership at the club’s
annual general meeting last
month, following retiring from
the role of director, and also
treasurer, which he held for about
25 years.
