Lincoln Community Committee members have been consulting on whether to reduce it from 50 to 30km/h, from New World Supermarket through to the Liffey bridge. While the district council is planning a major upgrade of Gerald St starting in 2027, committee members are concerned about the danger to pedestrians and cyclists in the meantime. Jason Wills, branch manager of Harcourts Lincoln, said he supported the proposal. However, he believed the Jason Wills stretch of road subject to the new speed limit could be shorter, starting at the town’s library rather than the supermarket. Daily he and other staff at the real estate business had their office environment disrupted by the sound of screeching tyres and tooting horns. He said he himself regularly had close calls while crossing the road at the nearby Gerald St pedestrian crossing, as a small proportion of motorists did not stop. “You just have to be so cautious and careful when you cross that road,” Wills said. Lincoln Hair Design owner operator Diane Clark highlighted the risk at the same intersection, and feared there would be a serious crash there. Another Gerald St business operator close to the Vernon Drive intersection said the intersection Diane Clark was dangerous as traffic had increased in recent years. However, he did not think reducing the speed limit to 30km/h would help. “Personally I think 50 is fine, if you stick to 50,” he said. A representative posting on behalf of the committee on the Lincoln community Facebook page said consultation had shown general support for the 30km/h proposal, as well as a new pedestrian crossing outside the Lincoln Library.
