Strong first game win for Leeston-Southbridge
LEESTON-Southbridge
launched their Canterbury
country cricket one-day
campaign in style, opener
Brayden Hill leading from the
front with a match-defining
century against Cheviot.
Hill’s classy 104 from 127
balls set up the home side’s impregnable
268/4 at Leeston Park
on Saturday, although Cheviot
made a decent fist of the chase
before falling 27 runs short.
Leeston-Southbridge had the
bye for round one but Hill and
opening partner Will Williams
(65) showed no signs of rust
as they posted 164 for the first
wicket.
The duo were
not separated
until the 34th
over; Harry
Chamberlain
and former
Dutch
Harry
Chamberlain
international
Tim Gruiters
added quickfire
cameos
worth 37 and 32 respectively to
maintain the momentum.
Opener Ryan Ellis, who made
a composed 66 runs off 118 balls,
anchored the chase while Angus
Sidey smashed a rapid 73 before
Scott Burnett gave Cheviot late
hope with some lusty blows
before they were all out in the
THE LINCOLN Bowling Club
is opening its greens to anyone
wanting to have a go at the sport.
Every Monday through to Christmas,
from 3-7pm, people can turn
up for a roll up and also get coaching
from Denis Smith, Lyndsey
Withell and Maurice Phiskie.
“There is no set time to start on a
Monday, you don’t need to come as
a team we will do that for you, just
rock up and play,” Smith said.
Mondays will be open to anyone
in the community. The first night is
free and after that $5 for non-club
members.
Bowls are available and flat sole
footwear is recommended. The bar
will be open with food available,”
Smith said.
IN CONTROL: After last week’s bye the Leeston-Southbridge team started the season
with a convincing win over Cheviot.
42nd over.
Josh Simpson was chief
destroyer, snaring 5/42 for the
combined side.
Southbrook and Sefton also
notched their first wins of the
season by comfortable margins.
After a tough loss to Cheviot
last weekend, Southbrook defend
what might have been a lean 127
from just 35 of their allotted 45
overs away at Weedons.
Canterbury left-arm spinner
“A casual and fun evening is
assured. Just turn up and we will
arrange a game for you. In mid-
January we will continue with the
very popular community bowls
that attracts over 120 players.
“We are an expanding club and
have excellent facilities.”
The club is in its 75th year but
jubilee celebrations planned for
this month are on hold because of
Covid restrictions.
Meanwhile, ladies day will be on
Wednesday mornings and men’s
on Thursday afternoons during the
summer season along with club
events at the weekends.
Interclub competitions for town
and district start at the end of the
month.
Blake Coburn gave Weedons
hope with a four-wicket haul but
Weedons were unable to gain
any traction at the crease against
a strong bowling unit.
Pacemen Luan Blom and
George Gunn knocked off the
top order and Weedons never
Oxford-Rangiora suffered
their second straight loss with a
crushing eight-wicket defeat to
Sefton at MainPower Oval.
Batting first, Oxford-Rangiora
only the Waghorn brothers Luke
and Jake offered much resistance
before the side was routed for a
sub-par 126.
Sefton barely broke a sweat
in the chase, with Canterbury
Country representative Chris
Warner making 45, and talented
Seals recruit Amandep Arora
stroking a carefree unbeaten 39
to seal an eight-wicket win.
