THE 40TH annual Darfield<br />

Artweek opening night on Friday<br />

attracted a crowd of close to 100<br />

contributing artists and sponsors,<br />

as organisers abided by alert level<br />

2 restrictions.<br />

About 350 artworks by 150<br />

artists featured. West Melton artist<br />

Henry Turner (right) received the<br />

coveted Malvern Community Arts<br />

Council premier award for his<br />

painting Echos.<br />

Judge Shirin Khosraviani<br />

said Echos was an outstanding<br />

example of imagination and<br />

careful use of technique. “There<br />

is plenty to explore in the<br />

mark-making and the potential<br />

narrative,” Khosraviani said.<br />

A wide range of further prizes<br />

were presented, including The<br />

Friends of MCAC Award which<br />

went to Mitsuyo Field for her<br />

watercolour In the garden shade.<br />

Two prizes were awarded in<br />

the newly created youth category,<br />

to Ella Stephens for Through the<br />

Lindis, and Ainsley Worling for<br />

Mystical Meadow.<br />

Darfield Artweek is open at<br />

the Darfield Recreation Centre<br />

and Te Huanui Art Gallery in<br />

Darfield, daily 10am-5pm, and<br />

Sunday, 10am-4pm. Admission<br />

is free.<br />

show at Darfield exhibition<br />

Southbridge School<br />

pupils at one with nature<br />

Southbridge School’s year 2 and 3 have planted native trees and<br />

hunted for bugs on farmland alongside the Lee River.<br />

About 30 pupils helped plant 400 trees as part of a Kids<br />

Discovery Plant-Out Day, supported by Te Ara Kākāriki and<br />

Ellesmere Sustainable Agriculture.<br />

Teacher Simon Dakers said it had been inspiring for the pupils<br />

to take their learning about biodiversity and sustainability<br />

into the field. They would continue to be involved at the site,<br />

monitoring it and calculating the presence of five native birds<br />

species and the percentage of plant survival in the first year.<br />

Dakers said a bug hunt with Environment Canterbury’s senior<br />

youth engagement adviser Matt Stanford (pictured) had been<br />

particularly successful.<br />

Pupils included (from left) Lucy Lemon, Violet Quilter<br />

and Blake Sinton. They found all manner of creatures, from<br />

centipedes and beetles to spiders and moths. They added their<br />

discoveries to the iNaturalist app, which allows findings to be<br />

logged by scientists.<br />
