Thus, have I heard: On one

occasion, the Exalted One was dwelling

at the monastery of Anathapindika in

the Jeta Grove near Savatthi. Shortly

after midnight, a certain deity, whose

brilliant appearance illuminated the

entire jeta grove, came to the Exalted

One. After approaching, he respectfully

bowed to the Exalted One and stood

to one side. There he addressed the

Exalted One in verse:

Many deities and humans are

thinking about happiness, wishing

for happiness. Please tell me the

greatest happiness. Not associating

with fools, associating with the wise,

honoring those worthy of honor;
