The current speed limit for the area is 50km/h. St Albans resident John Allen has raised his concerns about the 2017 audit to the community board. “If I were you I would be reducing the road to 40k until you sort this data out because it could result in the death of a cyclist,” Allen said. Board member Pauline Cotter said the audit Allen was concerned about was four years old, and the situation may have changed. “We’ve asked staff for information on the most recent safety audit.” The board was open to taking action, including by introducing a speed limit change if it was recommended, she said. An update on the situation was expected at the next board meeting in two weeks. The 2017 audit stated while the probability of a crash occurring was assessed as “occasional”, the likelihood of a crash being serious or fatal was “very likely” due to narrow road and cycle lanes. The audit recommended the width of the median island be reduced from 1.8m to 1.2m, “to increase the width available for cyclists and traffic”. However, the audit also noted a median of 1.8m was a consent condition of the project and that recommendations were not prescriptive. “Bottom line, council staff knowingly applied for a resource consent with a road that is unsafe in its design. It’s not wide enough,” Allen said. Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday November 4 2021 The Star NEWS 5 Police dog, pregnant woman attacked • By Anna Leask A MAN is facing a raft of charges after an alleged attack on his pregnant partner and a police dog, one of the country’s best new canine recruits. Emergency services were called to an Armagh St address on Tuesday night after the man, in his 30s, allegedly assaulted the woman and took off. A police spokesperson said about 20 minutes later a vehicle was stolen from a nearby construction site. It was tracked using its GPS to a car park in Crosby St where a man was located. “He attempted to flee on foot and was stopped by two-yearold police dog Lenix,” said the spokesperson. “The man has then allegedly struck Lenix on the nose with a hammer before also assaulting the dog’s handler. “Both the officer and Lenix sustained minor injuries.” It is understood the man threw a hammer at the handler. “The alleged offender has been charged with a range of offences including resisting police, assaulting police, injuring a police dog and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle,” said the spokesperson. The injured officer was treated at the scene and Lenix was taken to a vet. “Lenix, who was recently voted New Zealand’s top trainee police dog, is expected to be back at work in a few days,” said the spokesperson. The pregnant woman suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment at the scene of the initial callout. Court records show the man was also due to appear before a community magistrate on other charges including burglary, being on a property unlawfully, receiving stolen property, failure to answer bail, procuring or possessing methamphetamine. Lenix started duty with the police in March this year.
