DIABETES AWARENESS
Diabetes Christchurch -
Supporting people with Diabetes
Access to diabetes care: if not now, when?
The theme for World Diabetes Day
2021-23 is access to diabetes care. 100 years
after the discovery of insulin, millions of
people with diabetes around the world
often cannot access the care they need.
People with diabetes require ongoing care
and support to manage their condition
and avoid complications. Affordable access
to new diabetes technological devices
including insulin pumps, continuous
glucose monitors and new medications are
paramount.
July 27th, 2021 marks one of the most
important days in diabetes treatment
history. In 1921, Dr Frederick Banting,
a Canadian surgeon and Charles Best, a
medical student, successfully isolated the
hormone insulin for the first time. This
breakthrough research at the University
of Toronto, Banting and Best successfully
isolated insulin from dogs, produced
diabetes symptoms in the animals, and then
provided insulin injections that produced
normal blood glucose levels.
The centenary of the discovery of insulin
presents unique opportunities to bring
about meaningful change for the 24,000
people living with all forms of diabetes
in Canterbury and for those more at risk.
1 in 10 people worldwide are living with
diabetes.
Fundamental components of diabetes
care include access to:
In 1921 Banting and Best with the
first dog ever treated with insulin. Plans
were quickly underway for an insulin
treatment for humans. Next, they extracted
insulin from the pancreases of cattle from
slaughterhouses. On January 23, 1922,
14-year-old Leonard Thompson became the
first person to receive an insulin injection
as treatment for diabetes. The teenager’s
diabetes improved dramatically. Diabetes,
which had been regarded as a fatal disease,
could finally be managed! Nobel Prize: By
1923, insulin had become widely available in
mass production, and Banting and Macleod
were awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine.
Charles Best, being a graduate student, was
not included. Banting recognized Best’s
involvement by sharing the award money.
