D. Personal EssayThe applicant has the opportunity to present their motivation for pursuing a career in medicine andexperiences that reflect an understanding of health care delivery.E. Activities and AchievementsThe applicant should provide an overview of the accomplishments and character traits that align withWUSOM’s educational goals. The applicant should briefly describe their participation in a communityor volunteer service, leadership role, research experience, and patient exposure.Selection CriteriaWUSOM identifies a diverse group of candidates who demonstrate the potential to persevereacademically and be compassionate individuals with professional attributes and a commitment toserving others. The ideal candidate will complete a rigorous course of study that will produce culturallycompetent healthcare leaders.The Admissions Committee selects candidates by assessing each applicant's overall achievementacademically and equally those of non-academic areas.A. Academic PotentialThe initial assessment screens applicants according to whether they meet the specified academicrequirements outlined in Admission Requirement A and B. B. Attributes and AccomplishmentsAn applicant deemed successful in the initial screening of academic potential will qualify for theassessment of non-academic criteria. The Admissions Committee considers a number of attributes andachievements to provide an overall non-academic screening of the potential candidate.Maturity and responsibilityEmotional stability and communicational skillsCommunity serviceLeadership and researchSelf-directed learningPersonal statement and recommendation letters are used in assessing the above criteria. In addition, theAdmissions Committee conducts interviews to explore the aforementioned non-academic criteria ordistinctive personal qualities and experiences.The Admissions Committee identifies and admits students who can meet these specified standards andefforts to include diversity and equal opportunities among in matriculating class.Transfer Students and Transfer CreditTransfer students can be accommodated only during the Basic Sciences semesters or prior tobeginning the clinical clerkship. Any applicant requesting advanced standing must contact theAdmissions Office or the Dean of Student Affairs to discuss their eligibility.If positions are available and permitted for students in good standing from a listed medical school inthe World Directory of Medical Schools, then transfer is accommodated to the appropriate semester.Admission requirements for transfers require submission of previous medical school officialtranscripts and examination scores (e.g. USMLE Step 1, Step 2 score and NBME CBSE Score, ifapplicable).*Refer to our general Admission Requirements for additional submissions.* Letter of good standing is required from the previous school and a letter from the applicant statingthe reason for the transfer.Page | 17
