3G NETWORK SUNSET
Mobile carriers are shutting down
their 3G networks to make room for
more advanced network services, including
5G. As a result, many older cellphones
and other mobile devices will be
unable to use data services, according to
the FMCSA.
“Once a 3G network is no longer supported,
it is highly unlikely that any
ELDs that rely on that network will be
able to meet the minimum requirements
established by the Electronic Logging
Device Technical Specifications, including
recording all required data elements
and transferring ELD output files,”
FMCSA officials said.
Any ELD that requires 3G cellular connectivity
to perform its functionality will
no longer be in compliance with the technical
specifications in the ELD rule once
the 3G network it relies on is sunsetted.
When in an area that does not support 3G,
a 3G device will register a malfunction.
The carrier has eight days to get the
malfunction resolved, in this case by replacement,
unless an extension is granted,
the FMCSA news release stated.
The announced sunset dates are listed
below. These are dates for completing the
shutdowns. Mobile carriers are planning
to retire parts of their networks sooner.
• AT&T 3G: Feb. 22, 2022
• Sprint 3G (T-Mobile): March 31,
2022
• Sprint LTE (T-Mobile): June 30, 2022
• T-Mobile 3G: July 1, 2022
• Verizon 3G: Dec. 31, 2022
Many other carriers, such as Cricket,
Boost, Straight Talk and several Lifeline
mobile service providers, utilize the
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile networks.
WWW.THETRUCKERJOBS.COM THE TRUCKER JOBS MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2021 15

When he left the fire
department, however, Daum
let his hair and beard grow —
and his jolly alter ego stepped
to the forefront. People started
offering him holiday gigs
almost immediately.
“When I started to let my
beard grow out, it started
growing out completely gray,
which was not a big surprise
because my hair was gray. I
just let it go. And, I had the
physique for (being Santa). In
other words, I’m fat,” he said
with a laugh.
“I had a couple people ask
me to play Santa Claus, and
they got me the real cheap
‘dollar-store’ Santa Claus
suits,” he said, adding that his
Christmasy career expanded
to playing Santa Claus for
company gatherings. “It just
developed from there.”
The more he embraced the
concept, the more seriously
Daum took the role. He bought
a higher-quality Santa suit
from a thrift store and began
to hone his chops, especially
when it came to interacting
with children.
“The thing with being Santa:
You’ve got to be very, very observant to catch little nuances
and little things here and there,” he said. “I had one little girl
walk up to me at one of the truck stops. I was just sitting
down to eat my lunch, behaving myself, and this little girl
walked up and said, ‘How you doing, Santa?’
“I started talking to her, and her brother called her name.
So, I was able to call her by her name and call her brother by
his name, and (their) mom was just standing there with her
mouth agape, watching the whole interaction,” he recalled.
“I picked up other little clues — the little boy had a choir
shirt on, so I asked him how he was doing in the choir. His
mouth hit the floor.”
Because he still makes his living as a driver and has to
stick to a schedule, Daum says he is selective about the
Santa appearances he makes. If he were able to be a full-time
Santa, he could easily handle three or four times as many
gigs in November and December than he does. His favorite
events, naturally, are those that involve children.
PHOTOS BY LAINA DAUM
Todd Daum, a driver for Cliffside Transportation, wasn’t
crazy about being called Santa in the beginning.
Eventually, though, he came to accept his resemblance to
St. Nick. Now, for two months out of the year, he is happy to
take “elfies” and embrace his Santa persona.
“I don’t have a problem with
kids, and never have. Kids
don’t bother me a bit. Other
people’s children, you spoil
them rotten (and then) send
them home to their parents. No
big deal,” he said, with a few
more chuckles.
“It’s one of those things that
kids will always remember,”
he explained. “Does it hurt me
to sit there two minutes longer
than I wanted to, just to make
their day? No. Doesn’t hurt me
in the slightest to spend a few
minutes of my time to make a
kid feel good.”
Even with the number
of “Santa sightings” Daum
experiences, both in costume
as an official Santa and in the
course of his job as a driver,
there are some that stand out
in his memory. Daum keeps a
photo in his phone, showing
him in full costume and
holding a laughing baby girl. A
year after the photo was taken,
the child’s mother shared the
photo with Daum, along with
the sad news that the little girl
had passed away.
While this particular
memory is bittersweet, Daum
lights up when talking about being able to grant special
wishes for the children of military personnel.
“Have I done, ‘I want to bring Daddy home for Christmas’
or, ‘I want to bring Mommy home for Christmas’? Yeah, I’ve
done three or four of those,” he said.
“(The parents) work it out with me beforehand, and that’s
always fun. But that’s also when I take a back seat. I might
be Santa Claus, but as soon as mom or dad steps out, I’m
gone. I disappear because I don’t want to be there, I want to
let the kid be totally enthralled with their parent at that point
in time,” he explained.
“So, I completely and totally disappear; change out of my
costume and leave, and the parents know that,” he continued.
“How I explain it to them is this: It’s not that I don’t want
to stick around and witness it, but the kid’s going to look
around and say, ‘Where did Santa go?’ and the parents say,
‘Well, he must have gone back to the North Pole.’ That’s part
of the magic.”
RIG of the
month
INTERVIEW BY WENDY MILLER
PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHAWN BARNHART
This Rig of the Month shows that the right details can go a long way to make
a stand-out truck. Owner Shawn Barnhart of New Florence, Pennsylvania,
bought this 2020 Kenworth W900L, named “It’s Only Money,” brand new in
2019. To give the truck its own personality, Barnhart added pinstriping, 7-inch
stacks, stainless steel-light bars, full fenders and much more. Inside the cab,
he painted the dash to match the exterior stripes and added some interior
panels. This Kenworth is powered by a Cummins engine with 565 horsepower
and is paired with an 18-speed transmission. When he’s working, Barnhart
can be found hauling steel in the Pennsylvania and Ohio area. When he’s
not on the road, he can be found spending time with his family and friends
by the pool.
truck-driving jobs
by state, driver type and more!
If you’re thinking about purchasing a truck, however,
expect that it will be hard to find — and you’ll pay more. If
you already own a truck, take good care of it. You might be
stuck with it for a while.
Two major negatives for a trucking business are fuel
prices and inflation. Prices for food and many other products
have been on the rise. Those prices will remain high, or they
might go back down as the economy recovers, depending on
which economist you’re following today. It will definitely
cost more to purchase a truck, and that holds true for parts
and repairs, too.
Another potential downfall of inflation is interest rates.
Inflation often results in an increase in interest rates as the
government attempts to keep rising wages and prices under
control. If you’re thinking about purchasing a truck on
credit, watch for interest rate increases.
In addition, diesel fuel prices have risen to their highest
point since October 2014 and aren’t expected to decline
any time soon. Demand for oil has increased significantly
as the global economy returns to normal. In many cases,
fuel surcharges make up for most or all of the increased fuel
costs, but truck owners must be diligent about making sure
total compensation covers the fuel cost.
It’s important to note that trucking is a cyclical business.
When there aren’t enough trucks to haul all the freight, rates
go up and more trucks are sold. At some point, the balance
tips the other way and there are too many trucks. That
condition drives rates downward. It’ll happen this time, too,
but since carriers can’t buy all the new trucks they want, the
current conditions should last a while longer.
Even the best of conditions don’t guarantee success,
however. It’s always a good idea to arm yourself with the
latest industry news and information. Industry publications
like The Trucker (thetrucker.com) are a good place to start.
Larger carriers often use industry analysts to provide more
detailed information. Firms like ACT Research (actresearch.
net), FTR Intel (ftrintel.com) and Cass Information
Systems (cassinfo.com) offer in-depth analysis, but charge
their clients for the information. All of them, however, offer
free email newsletters and blogs that can help any trucking
business owner keep up with current conditions — and, of
course, The Trucker works to keep its readers apprised of
information provided by these services.
Load boards like DAT (dat.com) and Truckstop.com
offer general pricing trends and other information. If you
subscribe to these or other load boards, you’ll be able to get
a feel for freight availability and rates in different parts of
the country.
The coming year looks to be a good one for truck and
small fleet owners. It’s important to learn as much as possible
about the freight market, and budget carefully against the day
when conditions turn downward. Owners who manage their
business carefully, including keeping debt under control, can
see success in the coming year.
