Pedestrian refuges ‘not enough’
• By Fiona Ellis
A PROPOSAL to install
two pedestrian islands near
Langdons Rd is not enough to
keep everyone safe, a resident
says.
The city council is now seeking
public feedback on its proposal
to install the two islands on the
road bordering Northlink shopping
centre.
However, Ian Wilkie, who
drives to Northlink shopping
centre rather than make the
short journey across the road on
foot, is “far from happy” with the
proposal.
People with mobility problems,
such as his wife, would still
struggle to cross the road, he
said.
“You still have the problem of
getting from the pavement to the
refuge,” Wilkie said.
He would prefer lights or a pedestrian
crossing to be installed,
and the latter option would be
inexpensive for the city council
to install, he said.
“All we want is a couple of
coats of paint on the road.”
Papanui-Innes Community
Board chairwoman Emma Norrish
said pedestrian islands were
a positive step and the board
was pushing for more changes in
future.
“We have been hearing that
pedestrians are having trouble
crossing Langdons Rd.
“These pedestrian refuges are
like a quick win, that there’s
money in the budget for, that we
can get it in this financial year
“That’s not where we’re stopping,
we do want more.”
Rather than a pedestrian crossing,
traffic lights by the shopping
centre were likely to be the
board’s preference, she said.
A city council investigation
into the safety situation of both
Langdons Rd and the wider area
was ongoing, and this would
help the board determine what
was needed.
“We’ve been asking since that
development opened for traffic
lights at the Langdons and
Greers Rd intersection, and just
more things down there to make
it safer, because I think it’s busier
than anybody expected it to be,”
Norrish said.
City council transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas
said a report on the pedestrian
islands will be presented to the
community board for a decision
following the public consultation,
which is set to end on
December 13.
“This is likely to be in February
2022,” Thomas said.
“If the proposals are approved
by the board, it is anticipated
that the works will be completed
before the end of the financial
year.”
