Branches breaking from
tree creating a hazard
•From page 1
Last year, a “huge” branch
fell of the tree in calm weather,
blocking the driveways on
either side.
“Anybody underneath it, it
would have killed them.”
A lot of people walked
under the tree, including
children, residents and those
taking a shortcut to the bus
stop on Memorial Ave, he
said.
He believed the risk was
ongoing, as dry weather
could cause eucalyptus trees
to drop branches.
“There have been other
smaller branches come off
from time to time.”
Two weeks after the tree
was pruned earlier this year,
another branch fell off, he
said.
“Someone could have been
badly injured by it, or killed.”
A report by arborist Tony
Armstrong included in the
board’s meeting agenda last
week stated that the tree
would cost an estimated
$5000 to remove and replace.
During the meeting, the
board decided to look into
the possibility of residents
contributing to the removal
cost.
However, on Monday,
MacDonald said residents
would not be asked to contribute.
“Because of the health and
safety nature of it, it’s very,
very clear that our staff just
need to get on and do it.
He believed asking residents
to do this would likely
cost more in time than it
would save in funds.
“It’s certainly not unreasonable
for the council to do
within its existing budget.”
The tree was scheduled to
be removed by Christmas,
he said.
SET TO GO: The 21m
tall tree, which last year
dropped a large branch
in calm weather, will
be removed before
Christmas.
‘Dangerous
precedent’
A report in the meeting agenda
also stated Walsh took a leading role
in the protection and ongoing management
of distressed heritage trees
following the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, ensuring their survival.
Walsh was awarded a Local Hero
Award in 2016.
The decision to approve the name
Arbour Grove was approved by the
board in spite of objections voiced
by Ali Jones and Emma Twadell.
Jones moved the name Walsh Rd
be approved.
“I think the point [Walsh] made
with regards to ‘lets not tar everyone
with the same brush is absolutely
key’,” she said.
“I don’t see any other options
there that are better than the applicant’s
option.
“I think it will be a real shame
and set a dangerous precedent if
we go along with what the staff are
recommending here.”
Twaddell seconded the motion,
stating that it was important to
support those who helped in the
earthquake recovery.
Simon Britten did not support the
name Walsh Rd, saying there were
other ways to recognise those who
had made a significant contribution
to the city.
The board discussed the option
of putting the issue back to staff
for more information, but Walsh
objected to this, saying it would take
too long. Jones’ motion failed and
the board approved the decision to
name the road Arbor Grove.
