THE FORMATION of groundbreaking
women’s cricket teams
in the Selwyn District has paid
dividends with the Selwyn
Wahine under-16 squad already
challenging for the Shirley
Cowles one-day series crown
in the Christchurch Metro
competition.
After five rounds the Wahine
sit second in the five-team competition,
ahead of powerhouse St
Albans and another established
city club, Old Boys Collegians.
Their captain Elsie Duncan is
also the leading run-scorer with
92 at 46.0 and a highest score of
52no – in spite of batting only
three innings.
Parents conceived the idea to
form the teams last season after
promising female players were
generally forced to play in a
mixed team in a predominately
male competition locally, or join
a women’s team in the city.
Keri Herd and Jenny Duncan
were among the parents who
dreamt up the pathway after
watching the Social 8 Canterbury
country women’s team
play on Saturday afternoons –
with young girls filling in when
required.
There are currently four Selwyn
Wahine teams representing
the club in the year 5-6, year 7-8,
under-16 youth team and division
1 in the Metro competition.
“It’s been great to see that
within the first few months of
the season there has not only
been an improvement in their
skills but connections and
friendships have been made as
well,” Selwyn Wahine spokeswoman
Kylie Horgan said.
“So much about sport is about
camaraderie and connections
. . . sometimes this can be difficult
across genders especially as
they move into the teenage years.
“Our vision is simple – to offer
females from Selwyn Cricket
Club and further afield the option
to play in a Selwyn-based
team appropriate to their age and
skill level.”
Horgan added the development
fast-growing district was timely
given New Zealand hosts the
World Cup next year.
“This will help raise the profile
of the game as an option for
wahine to get involved in. If you
can see it, you can be it.”
The under-16 squad have a
three-win two loss record, with a
victory over Old Boys Collegians
on October 30 their first of the
campaign – and particularly
memorable due to the venue.
They were able to play on
Hagley Oval, and follow in the
footsteps of the provincial and
international players they aspire
to emulate.
“It was awesome to play on
the same ground where I have
watched some of my favourite
players such as Sophie Devine
and Tom Latham play,” Duncan
said.
“It was even cooler to know
we were playing on the exact
same pitch Latham had played
on a couple of days earlier for
Canterbury.”
Although playing on the
ground itself with its test-quality
wicket pitch and carpet-like
outfield was unforgettable,
Duncan reckoned the highlight
of the encounter was “the extra
energy the experience gave the
girls when we went out onto
the ground.”
