Protecting native taonga
species with predator control
in Arthur’s Pass.
To protect orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka from local extinction in
Arthur’s Pass and Lake Sumner area the Department of Conservation (DOC),
Rangiora District intends to carry out predator control over approximately
53,765 hectares of public conservation land. (Refer to the application area
on map)
Description of the area
The Arthur’s Pass project area includes the Crawford, Polar, Poulter and Savannah
ranges, as well as the western ends of the Dampier and Studleigh ranges.
The southern boundary runs from near Binser Saddle in a westerly direction to a point
just past Douglas Stream. The western boundary then more or less follows the ridge
onto the Polar Range to Walker Pass, Mt Hunt and Worsley Pass towards Mt Koeti
before dropping down to the Minchin Bivouac and back up to Mt Byrne.
The northern boundary runs from Mt Byrne along the Crawford Range to the Lake
Mason Hut. The eastern boundary runs from Binser Saddle to the head of Lower Farm
Stream, follows the Poulter River East Branch across to Bull Creek and up onto the
Dampier and Studleigh ranges then down to near Lake Mason Hut.
The Arthur’s Pass and Lake Sumner area is predominately beech forest with open and
steep sided river valleys that extend to tussock lands and exposed mountain tops. It is
home to orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka, great spotted kiwi/roroa, rock wren/
pīwauwau and yellowhead/mohua.
Why we are doing predator control.
Predation by rodents and stoats causes orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka and
other threatened native species to decline and, in some cases, they face local extinction.
Predator control works
In 2019 a similar predator control operation was undertaken. Since then, the wild
population of orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka in Arthur’s Pass and Lake
Sumner has grown from approximately 150-200 to just over 300 birds.
Method of predator control
DOC has worked closely with its Treaty partner Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnunga on desired
outcomes and consulted with stakeholders and the community.
From the 2nd of December 2021 helicopters will aerially apply baits containing
biodegradable 1080 over the area shown on the map. Non-toxic prefeed bait will be
applied 5-7 days beforehand to entice the rodents to eat the pellets.
Non-toxic pre-feed baits are cylindrical cereal pellets, approximately 2 cm in length and
sandy coloured (not dyed). Prefeed contains a cinnamon lure to attract rodents.
Toxic baits are cylindrical cereal pellets, approximately 2 cm in length. They are dyed
green to deter birds and contain a cinnamon lure to attract rodents. Each toxic bait
contains 0.15% of sodium fluoroacetate (1080).
The aerial operation uses calibrated buckets and GIS mapping technology to ensure
bait drops in the designated area. Please see map attached.
The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember:
• DO NOT touch or eat the bait
• WATCH CHILDREN at all times
• DO NOT EAT animals from this area
• Toxic baits and carcasses are DEADLY to DOGS
Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access ways
in the above areas. Warning signs indicate that pesticide residues may remain in baits
and carcasses, possibly for more than six months.
If you suspect poisoning
Always contact: Your local doctor or local hospital or the National Poisons Centre:
0800 764 766 (urgent calls) or 03 479 7248 or dial 111.
