How we use policy andinstitutional tools to address its devastatingeffects will define not only our commitmentto the vulnerable population but also ourability to invest in the future of humanity.Adama DiengAn eminent juristADAMA Dieng is a former UN UnderSecretary General and Special Adviser ofthe Secretary General on the Preventionof Genocide, a position he held fromJuly 2012 to July 2020. He also servedas Registrar of the UN InternationalCriminal Tribunal for Rwanda from 2001to 2008.Before joining the UN, Dieng was theSecretary General of the Geneva-basedInternational Commission of Jurists from1990 to 2000 and he served as the UNIndependent Expert for Haiti between1995 and 2000.In 1993, he was Envoy of the UNSecretary General to Malawi to mediatebetween the government and pressuregroups.Dieng was the driving force behindthe establishment of the African Courton Human and Peoples’ Rights, and healso produced the draft of the AfricanConvention on Preventing and CombatingCorruption. In Senegal, Dieng wasRegistrar at the Supreme Court.He is a former founding member ofthe Board of Directors of the InternationalInstitute for Democracy and ElectoralAssistance as well as former President ofthe Martin Ennals Foundation.Dieng is an acclaimed human rightsexpert and lecturer on issues relating tointernational humanitarian law, humanrights law, and international criminaljustice.He was recently appointed by theProsecutor of the International CriminalCourt, Karim Khan, to serve as one of his17 Special Advisers.This was a keynote address presented by Adama Dieng in September at the virtual Oxford and Volkswagen Foundation conference on:“Governing Humanitarianism – Past, Present and Future”.AB16AFRICA BRIEFING NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2021
