FORUM WORKSHOP
SELECTING THE HARDWARE
As it’s sold, a computer hardware system actually
consists of several basic components and,
depending on need, several more peripherals.
The basics include the central processing unit
(CPU), which is the brain of the machine; the
monitor or screen; the hard drive; and the keyboard.
Attached to that CPU may be a mouse
for manipulating the cursor around the screen,
a modem for communicating with another
computer, a printer, and supplementary disk or
CD-ROM drives. The basic recommended
hardware configuration for managing
a business by computer
today includes a CPU, monitor,
hard drive, CD-ROM drive, keyboard,
mouse, and laser printer.
If you aren’t directed to a particular hardware
platform, you’ve a couple of choices to consider.
Most small store owners will find their
needs adequately served by either of the two
personal computer formats available in the
marketplace: the Macintosh equipment currently
made and manufactured by Apple Computer,
and the much broader selection of IBM
PCs and compatible machines from many other
computer makers.
The success of the Macintosh owes much to
the ease of use of its operating system. Users
of the Macintosh owes much to the ease of use
of its operating system. Users of the Macintosh
have no need to learn any codes or letter commands
in order to run the system. They direct
its activities by clicking on icons – graphic elec-
tronic buttons on the screen.
