ALLOW YOURSELF THE TIME
NEEDED TO MASTER THE SYSTEM
Even with training, there’s a definite learning
curve for hardware and software. It will take
time to set up the system that serves all your
needs, even as a start-up operation. Trying to
rush the process will only breed frustration.
That frustration could prevent you from gaining
all you can from the system.
The time required to learn and master your
computer system depends on what level of
computer skills you bring to the project. If
you’ve been working on a computer for years,
you’ll have the system running as soon as you
learn the nuances of the software. A computer
novice will need to allow extra time, weeks at
least, in order to get comfortable
with the operation of hardware
and software. All users will only
begin to discover the full power of
the system after using it to manage
the business a few months.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO EXPERIMENT
Once you’ve mastered the basics of running
the software, try to devise new ways of using
it to gain added insight into the business. Try
all kinds of reports, from day-to-day sales performance
to seasonal trends by category. Your
computer hardware has many more capabilities
than the software that runs your business
allows. Sample your options. You could invest
in a desktop publishing program and try your
hand at designing ads.
