Ano<strong>the</strong>r important feature<br />

associated with <strong>the</strong> Land Art<br />

Movement was <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

photography to prove <strong>the</strong> existence<br />

of <strong>the</strong> massive land works. These<br />

photographs were showcased<br />

by <strong>the</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g artists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

galleries as proof of <strong>the</strong>ir affiliation<br />

to <strong>the</strong> movement. Land art was<br />

usually documented <strong>in</strong> artworks<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g photographs and maps which<br />

<strong>the</strong> artist could exhibit <strong>in</strong> a gallery.<br />

Land artists also made art <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gallery by br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> material from<br />

<strong>the</strong> landscape and us<strong>in</strong>g it to create<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallations.<br />

The most famous land art work<br />

is Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty of<br />

1970, an earthwork built out <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

Great Salt Lake <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA. Though<br />

some artists such as Smithson used<br />

mechanical earth-mov<strong>in</strong>g equipment<br />

to make <strong>the</strong>ir artworks, o<strong>the</strong>r artists<br />

made m<strong>in</strong>imal and temporary<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> landscape such<br />

as Richard Long who simply walked<br />

up and down until he had made a<br />

mark <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth.<br />
