I am very <strong>in</strong>spired by<br />

<strong>the</strong> past, everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that relates to<br />

<strong>in</strong>nocence and<br />

nostalgia, says Cécile<br />

Davidovici<br />

- Exclusive to <strong>Magzoid</strong><br />

Cécile Davidovici is an<br />

embroidery artist from<br />

Paris. She had a creative<br />

childhood and studied<br />

drama, film, and <strong>the</strong>atre,<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g on to write and direct movies<br />

explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between <strong>in</strong>nocence<br />

and illusion. After f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g drama<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ater studies, Cécile set to<br />

review filmmak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> New York town<br />

as her next step. While <strong>in</strong> NYC, <strong>the</strong><br />

movies that she wrote and directed<br />

have been displayed at festivals<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> world, some receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

multiple awards.<br />

She discovered embroidery after<br />

los<strong>in</strong>g her mo<strong>the</strong>r and began to<br />

stitch images of her fad<strong>in</strong>g childhood<br />

memories. Still work<strong>in</strong>g to her <strong>the</strong>mes<br />

of <strong>in</strong>nocence and illusion, she<br />

wanted to capture and consider <strong>the</strong><br />

hazy moments from her past, that<br />

she had glimpsed <strong>in</strong> old family home<br />

movie videotapes. Davidovici has<br />

been able to adapt this new medium<br />

to permit herself to anchor her art<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> moment. Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

medium of textiles her own, twiddl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with threads <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manner a pa<strong>in</strong>ter<br />

would with pa<strong>in</strong>t, she is carv<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

her own niche with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> complex<br />

world of contemporary art.<br />

Portraits of a constant dream is a<br />

series of fem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e portraits, entirely<br />

hand embroidered. They portray a<br />

close-up of one face that becomes<br />

two, with no clue on <strong>the</strong> era. The<br />

faces are nearly identical, however,<br />

one is often bigger, more present,<br />

hid<strong>in</strong>g half of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The meticulous <strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

threads that depict sk<strong>in</strong> creates a<br />

new form of transparency that unveils<br />

<strong>the</strong> person beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> face. These<br />

women stare at us but <strong>in</strong> reality,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are look<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves,<br />

question<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir contradictions,<br />

reveal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir doubts. Their<br />

openness and vulnerability even<br />

allow <strong>the</strong> audience to see a part<br />

of <strong>the</strong>mselves when look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> medium of<br />

textiles her own, twiddl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with threads <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manner<br />

a pa<strong>in</strong>ter would with<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t, she is carv<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

her own niche with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> complex world of<br />

contemporary art.<br />

subjects. Davidovici places her<br />

own unique sp<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> medium of<br />

textiles and by layer<strong>in</strong>g threads as<br />

a pa<strong>in</strong>ter would with a pa<strong>in</strong>tbrush,<br />

she re-<strong>in</strong>terprets <strong>the</strong> face differently,<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g a new shape to <strong>the</strong>se faces,<br />

open<strong>in</strong>g a door for a re<strong>in</strong>vention, a<br />

new sk<strong>in</strong>, a new story.<br />
