were reformulated with inferior ingredients.
Exciting new artisanal products
have since cropped up to fill the void.
Likewise, in the last few years
we’ve discovered alternate versions of
many historical recipes in both books,
some of them older, most of them better.
We’ve also unearthed an additional
40 “lost” vintage recipes that we’ve
been itching to share with you, along
with much more — and much more
accurate — historical information and
drink lore. You’ll find all of the above
additions and corrections in these pages.
We’ve also thrown in the five best

happy to eat these words — and not just
because he hasn’t had a square meal in
a while. Thanks to a renewed worldwide
interest in classic and culinary
cocktails, you can now get a perfectly
mixed tropical drink in bars from San
Francisco to Seattle, New York to New
Orleans, and Belfast to Bratislava. Or
you can just turn to Appendix II of this
book, where the Bum has compiled 43
of the best contemporary exotic recipes
he encountered in his recent travels to
these cities, along with other new originals
that he cadged especially for this
