BAJAZET (Antonio Vivaldi 1678-1741)
In 1402, at the Battle of Ankara, Bajazet, the 11 th in line to a dynasty of Sultans known the world over as the
Thunder Bolt of Allah was defeated by Timur, known to his enemies as Timur the Lame, or Tamerlano.
Tamerlano had been steadily, ruthlessly forging the greatest empire the world had ever seen. He had taken on
Bajazet’s vast and superior army and vanquished them utterly.
Tamerlano had defeated Bajazet by enlisting the support of one of Bajazet’s greatest enemies: the Byzantine
prince, Andronico. But now Andronico found himself wondering if he hadn’t gotten into bed with the wrong man.
Tamerlano, the son of a lowly chieftain from Uzbekistan: a nowhere place. A man who claimed he was the direct
descendent of Ghengis Khan but was no more than a barbaric pagan. A man who killed whole villages
indiscriminately, women and children, who attacked with animal ferocity, who left piles of heads on his kill sites,
as a warning…
ATTO PRIMO
ACT ONE
SCENA 1 SCENE 1
BAJAZET
Prence, lo so: vi devo
ANDRONICO
Il vostr’odio, signor, vada in oblio.
Siete in poter del Tamerlano, e siete…
BAJAZET
Ben e pur prigioniero Non son io Bajazet?
per cui mi duol morir, io raccomando a voi;
so che vi è cara. V’ami per me,
ma si rammenti poi
d’odiare il Tamerlan quanto ama voi.
BAJAZET
Prince, I know that I am indebted to you
for these brief moments of liberty.
If this kind gesture is an attempt
on the part of my enemy
to appease my anger, I reject it.
Who wouldn’t want their freedom
from such an unworthy man?
ANDRONICO
Forget your hatred, my lord.
You are in Tamerlane’s power, and you are…
BAJAZET
A prisoner, well and truly, am I not? I, Bajazet?
If this is the last day of my life,
then I will no longer owe him anything.
ANDRONICO
Wanting to die is a desperate thought –
but what about Asteria?
BAJAZET
I don’t want affection to distract me from my wish to die.
Asteria, the only reason
why death brings me any grief, I entrust to you;
I know that she is dear to you. Love her for my sake,
but let her never forget to hate
Tamerlane as much as she loves you.
1
Del destin non dee lagnarsi
chi ha nel petto un’alma forte,
e l’aspetto della morte
non paventa un cuor di re.
Il morir solo m’avanza
e ’l mio caro amato pegno,
fido Prence, a te consegno:
tu poi l’ama ancor per me.
The man whose spirit is strong
should not grumble at fate,
and the prospect of death
holds no fear for the heart of a king.
Death is all that awaits me,
and she who is dear to me
I entrust to your care, faithful Prince:
you can love her when I am no more.
SCENA 2 SCENE 2
ANDRONICO
Non si perda di vista, Idaspe, il disperato;
IDASPE
Hanno già i greci
deposto nella man del vincitore
l’imperio di Bisanzio;
grato agli occhi d’Asteria
con la corona di Bisanzio in fronte.
ANDRONICO
Tu parti, e cauto siegui dell’Ottomano i passi.
IDASPE
Nasce rosa lusinghiera
al spirar d’aura vezzosa,
e a quel dolce mormorio va spiegando sua beltà.
Poscia al suol langue la rosa,
così fa bellezza altera,
che mancando tosto va.
ANDRONICO
Idaspe, we must not let this desperate man out of our sight.
Serving him we serve Asteria, in loving me,
may she at least love the love I bear for her father.
IDASPE
The Greeks have already
handed over to the conqueror
the Byzantine Empire.
Pay heed to this, and one day
you could find favour in Asteria’s eyes
with the crown of Byzantium on your head.
ANDRONICO
Asteria’s heart is worth more to me than the empire.
Go, and keep a careful but discreet eye on the Turk.
IDASPE
I shall, my lord; but you are too susceptible
to woman’s beauty that soon fades and dies.
The rose that beguiles opens her petals
to the whisper of a charming breeze,
and at the sound of that sweet murmuring reveals her beauty.
But then, in the sun’s glare, the rose
languishes; thus, it is too with
haughty beauty which soon fades.
SCENA 3 SCENE 3
TAMERLANO
Principe, or ora i greci
Potrete
partir a vostro grado. Ite a Bizanzio…
ANDRONICO
TAMERLANO
Prince, this very day the Greeks
have given your empire into my power.
But the only love in my heart is for glory,
and so, I return your throne to you.
I declare you Emperor: you are free
to leave when you will. Go to Byzantium…
ANDRONICO
Ah, my lord! The gift and the giver are great – but…
TAMERLANO
Ma il rifiutante?
TAMERLANO
Do you refuse?
2
ANDRONICO
Questi l’ottomano e vendicato appieno.
Bajazet dal suo sangue, e quel funesto
fulmine della guerra che vantò l’ottomano
sta troppo fisso nella sua famiglia,
e dalle man del padre
è passato negli occhi della figlia.
ANDRONICO
Che sento? Forse ne sareste amante?
TAMERLANO
ANDRONICO
No sir, but do I have to leave you so soon?
I pray you will let me remain here, to learn the skills of warfare
in the company of the conqueror of the world.
TAMERLANO
Andronico, I grant your wish,
I know you are impatient to command,
but your delay will be useful to win over our enemy.
This Turk, Bajazet, has been utterly defeated.
Because of his lineage, that fatal
passion for war of which Turks are so proud
has established itself in his family,
and passed from the hand of the
father to the eyes of the daughter.
ANDRONICO
What – could you be in love with her?
TAMERLANO
Yes, you are surprised by this change in me from warrior
to lover. You, Andronico, are the reason.
ANDRONICO
Io? Stravaganze
TAMERLANO
Sì, quando il superbo
irritava i miei sdegni,
mi conducesti a’ piedi
la mia funesta vincitrice; il pianto,
che chiedeva da me pietà del padre,
ottenne amor per lei.
Offrite a quel superbo
ANDRONICO
(Ahi, fiero colpo.) E Irene,signor,
che già s’avanza al vostro letto?
TAMERLANO
La destino per voi.
ANDRONICO
Per me, signore?
TAMERLANO
Per voi. Non posso far scelta miglior, né voi
migliore acquisto,Se penserete che l’impero e
Ireneambi due doni son della mia mano.
ANDRONICO
Me? How strange.
TAMERLANO
Yes. When the man’s pride
aroused my anger,
you brought to my feet the fateful woman
who has conquered my heart; the tears
she shed, imploring me to have pity on her father,
won my love.
Offer the proud Turk
my hand in marriage to his daughter.
This is the reward for my friendship.
ANDRONICO
(Ah, this is a savage blow.) And Irene, my lord,
who is already on her way here, to share your wedding bed?
TAMERLANO
She shall be yours.
ANDRONICO
Mine, my lord?
TAMERLANO
You. I cannot make a better choice, nor you,
a better bargain: if you consider that both Irene and the empire
are gifts that come from my hand.
3
In sì torbida procella
cerco invano amica stella,
non ho porto, non ho sponda.
Sol fra scoglie ondeggio ed erro
e dal legno a cui m’afferro
mi respinge il vento e l’onda.
In this gloomy storm
I seek in vain a friendly star:
I find no port, no shore.
I can only drift, tossed among rocks,
and the wind and the waves tear me away
from the ship to which I cling.
SCENA 4 SCENE 4
ANDRONICO
Quel ciglio vezzosetto,
ch’inspira grazie e amore,
quel labbro morbidetto
ferito ha questo cor,
né trova pace.
Esser non vò ingrato,
ma sempre vò seguir
quel caro volto amato
che ognor mi fa languir,
e il cor mi sface.
ANDRONICO
Those charming little eyes
that inspire grace and love,
those soft little lips
have wounded my heart,
and I find no peace.
I don’t wish to be ungrateful,
but I want to pursue for ever
that dear, beloved face
for which I yearn without ceasing.
and which melts my heart.
SCENA 5 SCENE 5
ASTERIA
Or sì, fiero destino,
che prigioniera io sono.
Nella crudel giornata
che Tamerlan vinse mio padre in campo,
con la mia libertà perdei me stessa.
Mi sovviene allor quando,
a vista del mio pianto
Andronico il gran duce abbassò il brando.
Mi vide, il vidi, e parve
che chiedesse la vita
lui che veniva ad arrecar la morte.
Andronico! L’amai, ed amo;
or lo spietato sol pensa alla corona,
e me qui lascia alle catene, ingrato.
ASTERIA
Now, harsh fate,
I am truly a prisoner.
On that cruel day
when Tamerlane defeated my father in battle,
I lost not only my freedom, but my very self.
I remember how the great commander
Andronicus, seeing my tears,
lowered his sword.
He looked at me, I looked at him,
and it seemed as if he were begging me for life,
he who had come to bring me death.
Andronicus! I loved him, and I love him still.
Now, heartless, he thinks only of the crown;
the ingrate leaves me here in chains.
SCENA 6 SCENE 6
TAMERLANO
genitore darò cortese e libertade, e pace.
ASTERIA
Forse Andronico ottenne da voi…
TAMERLANO
The time has come, Asteria,
to reveal to you a secret,
which will determine your fate, and the
fates of Bajazet, Andronicus and myself.
This conflict could end today, if you wish so.
You father would be free.
ASTERIA
Could it be that you have granted Andronicus…
4
TAMERLANO
Al greco prence
è noto il mio volere, e già favella
di vostre nozze al padre.
ASTERIA
Di mie nozze? Con chi?
TAMERLANO
Con Tamerlano.
ASTERIA
(Oh cielo!) Signor…
TAMERLANO
ASTERIA
Come? Quel sangue del german versato
minacciato nel padre in ogni momento,
è oppresso in me colla servil catena,
ASTERIA
Come? Di chi…?
TAMERLANO
D’Irene.
TAMERLANO
The Greek prince knows
my wishes, and is already discussing
your marriage with your father.
ASTERIA
My marriage? To whom?
TAMERLANO
To Tamerlano.
ASTERIA
(O heavens!) My lord…
TAMERLANO
Yes, I love you: that is all I need say.
You will be the first one to command
the ruler of the world with those beautiful eyes.
ASTERIA
What? After shedding my brother’s blood,
constantly threatening my father’s life,
and subjecting me to the chains of slavery,
you expect me to respond
to such vast hatred with sweet tenderness?
TAMERLANO
I understand your hatred, Asteria.
I was disgusted by your father
and Ortubule’s behaviour.
but then I saw your eyes for the first time
and my revenge seemed less urgent.
Your face keeps my anger dormant.
Do not stir up that hatred, Asteria:
my love, once scorned,
will not shield you from my rage.
ASTERIA
My lord, if the Greek prince
has made himself a party to this marriage,
before I consent, I must hear
my fate from his lips.
TAMERLANO
Your wish is granted; indeed, it is my desire too:
the Greek cannot help but do my will. I am restoring
his throne to him and giving him Irene to share his bed.
ASTERIA
What? Who…?
TAMERLANO
Irene.
5
ASTERIA
E Andronico l’accetta?
TAMERLANO
Si può temer.
ASTERIA
(Ahi sorte!)
TAMERLANO
Asteria, da voi sola dipende
render al genitor felice il fato,
grande un amante, e un vincitor beato.
Sento brillar nel sen
un novo lieto ardor
che mi consola.
Ah! che la sola spene
del caro amato bene
al duol m’invola.
ASTERIA
And Andronicus has agreed to this?
TAMERLANO
It would seem so.
ASTERIA
(Oh, fate!)
TAMERLANO
Asteria, you alone have the power
to sweeten your father’s fate,
to confer greatness on a lover, and bliss on a conqueror.
I can feel a new, joyful passion
shining in my heart
to comfort me.
Ah, if that dear, beloved blessing
should be taken from me,
I would be plunged into grief.
SCENA 7 SCENE 7
BAJAZET
Non ascolto più nulla.
ANDRONICO
Almeno udite in volontà d’Asteria
BAJAZET
BAJAZET
I will hear no more.
ANDRONICO
At least listen to what Asteria wants.
BAJAZET
She’s my daughter.
Don’t leave, Asteria, this concerns you.
And since I know that your heart
and mine are in complete agreement, I will answer for you.
ASTERIA
Di che?
BAJAZET
Il nostro nemico (ahi, che nel dirlo
avvampo di rossor,
ardo di sdegno!)
d’Andronico col mezzo
chiede le vostre nozze,
e m’offre in premio e libertade e pace.
L’empio sa pur che fremo
d’essergli debitor pur della vita.
ASTERIA
About what?
BAJAZET
Our enemy (ah, just saying the word
brings the blood to my cheeks
and makes me burn with rage),
using Andronicus as his messenger,
is asking for your hand in marriage;
in return, he offers me freedom and peace.
The monster knows how I shudder
at the very thought that I owe him my life.
ANDRONICO
Numi, che dirà Asteria?
ANDRONICO
Gods in heaven, what will Asteria say?
6
BAJAZET
Figlia, tu non rispondi?
ASTERIA
BAJAZET
tormentarlo.
BAJAZET
Daughter, will you not reply?
ASTERIA
My lord, in fact, he has been lying to me.
He may have felt some affection for me in the past
when we were both happy.
Now that the Tartar is selling
the crown to Andronicus, in his arrogance
he has changed his affections with his fortune.
Are you aware of the gift his great friend is giving him?
In exchange for me, he gets Irene.
Now ambition and a new love are calling him,
making him act not in our interests, but in his own.
BAJAZET
Is this true?
ANDRONICO
(You are so cruel – I can’t keep silent.)
Asteria, your lover does not deserve
such an unfair reproach. Know that I was forced to propose
this marriage and was afraid you might agree to it.
I have betrayed my own feelings for your sake.
But I see you are less ready to refuse the offer
than you were to accuse me of injustice.
BAJAZET
Prince, Asteria is my daughter; I shall reply on her behalf.
If you love my daughter, understand that Tamerlano
is not the greatest rival.
Tell him that his love is equaled by my hate, and
that I hope my daughter’s beauty will torment him.
Asteria refuses the offer, and I forfeit my head.
SCENA 8 SCENE 8
ANDRONICO
Asteria, non parlate?
Ai rimproveri vostri mal corrisponde questo
ostinato silenzio, onde che meco
siete sdegnata, o v’opponete al padre?
ASTERIA
ANDRONICO
Asteria, have you nothing to say?
After all your reproaches, this stubborn silence
seems out of place. I take it to mean that you are angry
with me, or do you disagree with your father?
ASTERIA
Believe what you want, but don’t be fooled by my father’s
calmness. He wants revenge over his enemy by refusing,
but I will have my revenge over you by consenting.
ANDRONICO
Ah principessa
ANDRONICO
Oh, princess
7
ASTERIA
on v’impegnate a nulla: non consento,
ASTERIA
Amare un’alma ingrata
pena è crudel spietata
che non da’ pace al cor.
Esprime il mio dolore
i spasimi del core
e pur non li conosce
un empio traditor.
ASTERIA
Don’t argue, Andronicus; carry out
my father’s orders, but don’t do anything
on my behalf: You do not have my permission
to carry my refusal to him, if my refusal is what you wanted,
or my consent, if that’s what you feared.
ANDRONICO
That is a cruel command! Then must I take my leave,
sure of your anger, but ignorant of my own fate?
But since it came from your own lips,
I carry your fair command imprinted on my heart.
ASTERIA
To love a thankless soul
is a cruel, harsh pain
that robs the heart of peace.
The palpitations of my heart
tell of my suffering,
suffering unknown
to the one who so cruelly betrayed me.
SCENA 9 SCENE 9
IRENE
IDASPE
Il Greco prence è questi, in breve a lui succederà il
monarca.
ANDRONICO
Gran donna illustre,
io vengo dal Tamerlan prescelto
al grande onor d’accogliervi
in sua vece.
IRENE
Ma il mio sposo dov’è?
ANDRONICO
IRENE
Is this how Tamerlane receives his bride?
That same bride who, heir
to a vast empire, gives herself to the Tartar?
I come into the royal palace
and see everyone except Tamerlane?
IDASPE
I present the Greek prince. The king will come later.
ANDRONICO
Great and illustrious lady,
I have the great honour
to have been chosen by Tamerlane
to welcome you on his behalf.
IRENE
But where is my bridegroom?
ANDRONICO
I have no choice but to tell you: I am he. But this change
is too great an insult to your noble destiny.
IRENE
M’ingannò dunque il Tamerlano,
oppure, pentito di mie nozze,
vuol ch’io parta nemica
quando venia sua sposa?
IRENE
Then Tamerlane deceived me.
Or does he regret his decision to marry me
and want me to leave as an enemy,
when I came as his bride?
8
ANDRONICO
Narralo, Idaspe, tu; sai ch’io non posso.
IDASPE
Il Tamerlano ha un altro amore in petto;
IRENE
Troppo grande è l ‘affronto
IDASPE
Signor, se tal lasciate partir Irene, asteria è già
perduta.
ANDRONICO
Idaspe, e qual partito?
IRENE
Chi m’addita la via
per chiamar al dover questo infedele?
Chi m’assicura da nuovi insulti,
e chi m’accerta poi
che lo possa veder per vendicarmi?
ANDRONICO
You tell her, Idaspe; you know I can’t.
IDASPE
Tamerlane has another love in his heart.
He wants to put the daughter of his
Turkish enemy on the throne.
IRENE
This is a great insult.
IDASPE
Sir, if you allow Irene to leave, you will lose Asteria.
ANDRONICO
Idaspe, what should I do?
IRENE
Who will show me how to
recall this faithless man to his duty?
Who will protect me from further insults,
and who will make sure
that I can see him and demand my rights?
ANDRONICO
Io.
IRENE
Ed in qual forma?
ANDRONICO
Udite: ancora ignota voi siete al Tamerlano:
fingetevi compagna o messaggiera
della sprezzata Irene;
pregate, minacciate: il tempo poi
darà incontro opportun per iscoprirli.
ANDRONICO
I will.
IRENE
How?
ANDRONICO
Listen: Tamerlane has never met you.
Pretend to be the companion of the despised Irene,
or a messenger sent by her;
Entreat him, threaten him; later
the time will come to reveal yourself to him.
IRENE
Qual guerriero in campo armato
pien di forza, e di valore,
nel mio cor innamorato,
sdegno e amor fanno battaglia.
Il timor del dubbio evento,
il dolore, ed il cimento
l’alma mia confonde e abbaglia.
IRENE
So be it. This is the way to protect my honour
without abandoning my rights.
Let’s go, then; the heir to Trebisond
puts her trust in you.
Like an armed warrior on the battlefield,
filled with strength and courage,
so too in my love-struck heart
do disdain and love do battle.
Unsure of the outcome, my heart
is bewildered and confused
by fear, pain and the coming ordeal.
9
ATTO SECONDO
ACT TWO
SCENA 1 SCENE 1
IDASPE
Anch’il mar par che sommerga
quella nave, che tu vedi
dissipata da procelle.
Poi la vedi, e par che s’erga
presso l’altra in fra le stelle.
IDASPE
You saw the boat
torn apart by the storm
and swallowed up by the sea.
But then you see it again, and it seems
to have been raised up and set among the stars.
SCENA 2 SCENE 2
ASTERIA
soglio. Or sodisfatta regnate, compiacetevi, ma pria
ASTERIA
Honour, scorn and love,
you judges of my heart – just for a moment,
let me act the faithless women. If only I could
then reap the fruit of my righteous vengeance!
ANDRONICO
Asteria, are you troubled? Why? Perhaps you are afraid
that you will ascend the throne right here in front of me?
That you so easily accepted?
ASTERIA
I’m not afraid to take the path that you showed me.
ANDRONICO
I believed you would run from it, not desire it.
But Tamerlane’s throne is far too tempting,
especially when offered by a lover…
ASTERIA
You, my lover? On what evidence? You threw
me into the arms of my worst enemy, knowing
how much I hate Tamerlane.
ANDRONICO
I knew you hated him, but not that you desired the throne.
Now you can reign and be happy, but know that your ambition
could cost the life of your beloved father and faithful lover.
ASTERIA
Hush, Andronicus:
I am not led by ambition, nor am I in love with the throne.
ANDRONICO
ANDRONICO
If that is so, then I shall protest against
these proposed marriages with all my strength.
I shall shout out my enmity
to Tamerlane: I shall refuse the empire,
and even die, if I must.
10
ASTERIA
ASTERIA
There is no more time for this: Tamerlane is calling for me.
After tightening my chains, you reproach me?
You create my suffering, and then you threaten me?
Honestly, you are a fool, and I don’t understand you.
If you gave me to another, I applaud the gift.
If you accepted another woman, I am not to blame.
I don’t understand why you keep on complaining.
SCENA 3 SCENE 3
ANDRONICO
La sorte mia spietata
farmi di più non può:
m’accusa e mi condanna
la bella mia tiranna
d’infido e traditor.
Che barbaro rigor! Che grave affanno!
Rifiuta quell’ingrata,
ANDRONICO
My cruel fate
has done its worst:
my beautiful tyrant
accuses me and condemns me
of being a faithless traitor.
What savage cruelty! What torment!
The ungrateful woman refuses to accept
the heart that she stole from me.
My very faithfulness
has become a crime and a sin.
The cruelest of cruelties is arming itself to wound me.
SCENA 4 SCENE 4
IDASPE
Signor, vergine illustre
chiede accostarsi per Irene al soglio.
TAMERLANO
Venga colei, che a noi
Irene invia per isplorarne i sensi;
IRENE
(La schiava assisa, e la regina in piedi?)
Signor, di Trebisonda l’erede a voi…
TAMERLANO
Non t’inoltrar, m’è noto
ciò che pretende Irene; Asteria parli.
IDASPE
My lord, a noble maiden begs leave
to approach the throne with a message from Irene.
TAMERLANO
Let Irene’s messenger come forward,
that we may hear what she has to say.
Let her read in Asteria’s face
the future I have determined for my throne.
IRENE
(The slave is seated, while the queen stands?)
My lord, the heir to the throne of Trebisond greets you…
TAMERLANO
That’s enough; I am aware
of Irene’s claims. Asteria, speak.
ASTERIA
ASTERIA
Asteria bows in submission
before the greatest of kings, and humbly
offers her hand to the conqueror of the world.
Because I am in disgrace with my father,
let us celebrate our wedding as soon as possible,
before he becomes angrier still.
11
TAMERLANO
IRENE
Fermate, o Tamerlan, che quella mano prima è
dovuta a Irene.
TAMERLANO
Quanto ardita è costei?
IRENE
Cruda sorte, avverso fato!
Sono infido, sono ingrato,
ma se gl’occhi di costei
di mia colpa sono rei,
freni Irene il suo furor.
Il suo sdegno fia placato,
ch’io le dono sposo e trono,
che del mio non è minor.
TAMERLANO
You ask only what I desire. Let us leave
this place quickly -here is my hand as a pledge.
IRENE
Stop, Tamerlane: that hand is owed first to Irene.
TAMERLANO
How bold this woman is!
IRENE
Do you not blush with shame to betray a queen
in order to offer your hand in marriage to a slave?
TAMERLANO
Woman, that’s enough scolding from you.
I am guilty, I know, but I say this in my defence:
I offer her a throne which is no less than mine.
Let her be satisfied, and reign.
Cruel destiny – Fate is against me!
I am faithless, I am ungrateful,
but since those eyes of hers
are to blame for my sin,
let Irene restrain her rage.
Let her anger be calmed,
for I offer her a husband and a throne
no lesser than my own.
SCENA 5 SCENE 5
ASTERIA
dicesti…
IRENE
E che? Pretendi forse
allo sposo usurpato aggiunger nuovi insulti?
ASTERIA
IRENE
Che dunque?
ASTERIA
Dille alfin che non parta:
forse la sua fortuna,
quand’io dispiaccia al tartaro, risorge;
ASTERIA
Listen, whoever you are - you were so quick to speak out
on Irene’s behalf…
IRENE
And what of it? Or do you have
new insults to add to the injury of stealing a husband?
ASTERIA
First tell her what is in Asteria’s heart:
she must know that I am not attracted to the throne
to be queen nor any tender feeling.
IRENE
What is it, then?
ASTERIA
Tell her not to leave:
perhaps her star will rise again
when I fail to please the Tartar, will revive;
12
in pegno dei miei detti ecco la mano;
saprà Asteria spiacer a un Tamerlano.
La cervetta timidetta
corre al fonte, al colle, al monte,
trova alfine il suo diletto,
l’accarezza, si consola.
Cerchi Irene il suo diletto,
ah! il suo ingrato
sposo amato il mio cor no, non gl’invola.
Here is my hand as a pledge of my words:
Asteria will find a way to make Tamerlane reject her.
The timid little deer
runs to the stream, to the hill, to the mountain,
and when at last she finds her beloved,
she caresses him and is comforted.
Let Irene seek her beloved:
ah, it won’t be my heart
that steals away her ungrateful, beloved husband!
SCENA 6 SCENE 6
IRENE
Gran cose espone Asteria.
IDASPE
IRENE
Alla tua fede mi raccomando, Idaspe.
IDASPE
Così servo al monarca e a Irene insieme
IRENE
risoluta.
IDASPE
Cauto de’passi suoi seguirò l’orme.
IRENE
O Dio! Manca il valor e la costanza.
IRENE
Asteria has revealed important matters.
IDASPE
Which means that she surely has even greater ones in mind.
IRENE
I’m putting my trust in you, Idaspe.
IDASPE
Thus, I am helping both the monarch and Irene.
IRENE
Don’t lose sight of this determined enemy slave.
IDASPE
I will follow her cautiously.
IRENE
Neither reason nor beauty have been any use
in defending the throne; I would be happy
if at least it repaid me with gratitude today
As a bride, I am despised.
My faithfulness is abused.
What have I done to earn this, O heaven?
And yet he is my heart,
my bridegroom, my beloved, my hope.
I love him, but he is unfaithful.
I hope, but he is cruel.
Shall I give myself to Death?
O God! I don’t have the courage or the resolve.
SCENA 7 SCENE 7
BAJAZET
Dov’è mia figlia, Andronico?
BAJAZET
Where is my daughter, Andronicus?
13
ANDRONICO
Sul trono.
BAJAZET
Su quale trono?
ANDRONICO
Su quello del tuo nemico.
BAJAZET
Del Tamerlan?
ANDRONICO
Così non fosse.
BAJAZET
Ah! indegna.
E quando? E come? Ahi, me tradito! Parla.
ANDRONICO
Non son più padre, più re non sono;
La sorte barbara
non ha più affanno,
non ha più fulmine il ciel tiranno
ch’esser terribile possa per me.
Vede l’istesso nemico fato
che non può farmi
più sventurato,
che se m’uccide, crudel non è.
ANDRONICO
On the throne.
BAJAZET
On what throne?
ANDRONICO
The throne of your enemy.
BAJAZET
Tamerlane?
ANDRONICO
I wish it were not true.
BAJAZET
The unworthy girl!
When? How? Ah, I am betrayed! Tell me!
ANDRONICO
Just now I myself saw her entering the tents
of the Tartar. Led by
vengeance or ambition, she will ascend the throne.
BAJAZET
And you, cowardly lover:
as our enemy, you were able to force her
from the throne that was hers by right –
couldn’t you have blocked her path
to a throne that was not hers?
ANDRONICO
I spoke with her, I shouted at her, but a girl who does not
respect her father is not going to listen to a despised lover.
BAJAZET
Let’s go. Unjust heavens!
I am desperate.
I no longer have a daughter; I no longer have a throne.
I am no longer a father; I am no longer Bajazet.
Where is my daughter?
Where is my throne?
I am no longer a father, nor a king;
Savage fate
has no further sorrows,
nor the tyrannous sky any thunderbolts
that could strike terror in me.
Fate, my enemy, can see for itself
that there is nothing it can do
to make me any more wretched,
for if it killed me, that would be no cruel deed.
14
SCENA 8 SCENE 8
TAMERLANO
ASTERIA
Perfida indegna figlia.
TAMERLANO
trono.
BAJAZET
Non s’affatichi alcuno. Eccomi io stesso proeso a
terra. Ascendi ascendi al trono, teco c’ascenda
TAMERLANO
Asteria, here we sit in royal state:
is my throne or my bed as hideous as Bajazet claimed?
Well?
ASTERIA
No. (My revenge will lend them beauty.)
With all disdain now put aside,
my lord, your pleasure has become my law.
TAMERLANO
Then to the royal quarters, fair lady.
ASTERIA
To the royal quarters, yes (but there to slay a monster).
BAJAZET
Where is Asteria?
TAMERLANO
What are you doing here, Bajazet?
BAJAZET
I have come to stop my daughter.
TAMERLANO
Asteria is no longer your daughter, but my wife.
BAJAZET
Your wife – this cannot be true.
Turkish blood may not be coupled with that of a shepherd.
TAMERLANO
Speak Asteria, so that this insolent man is humbled.
ASTERIA
It’s true father. I’m taking the throne and you must suffer
in silence (I cannot say what is in my heart)
BAJAZET
I must be silent? You are a wicked and unworthy daughter.
TAMERLANO
You need to be humbled.
Bow down proud Ottoman and I will take
off your head and make it a footstool for my throne.
BAJAZET
Don’t exert yourself – I am already on the ground.
Rise to your throne with Asteria,
15
and, oh cruel gesture, my daughter can reach it
by stepping over her father’s head.
TAMERLANO
Look carefully at your daughter Bajazet, see how
she is ashamed of your inappropriate pride.
Andronico, it is time I showed my gratitude.
Asteria is mine, thanks to you, so I offer you Irene
in return – and with her both empires.
SCENA 9 SCENE 9
BAJAZET
Odi, perfida, e tu, fiero nemico,
lasciami favellar e ti prometto
Tu sorella a Ortubule?
Tu figlia a Bajazette?
Tu del sangue ottoman?
Perfida, menti.
Quest’ultimo ti resta
ancor tra tuoi delitti.
Ma non sperar, me estinto,
pace mai su quel trono:
spaventerò i tuoi sonni ombra vagante,
forse
nell’odio tuo, nell’odio mio sicure.
Disumanata, un padre disperato
ti dimanda la morte e ti minaccia,
e a pietade o a timor ciò non ti muove?
Andiamo a mendicar la morte altrove.
ASTERIA
Padre, ferma.
TAMERLANO
BAJAZET
No more, my lady: I will take up your cause. If my
daughter does not renounce the throne; I am not her father.
Listen, treacherous woman, and you, my cruel enemy:
let me speak, and I promise that this will be
the last day that you will hear my voice.
Asteria, whom I no longer recognize as my daughter:
tell me, are you the woman
who swore hatred and vengeance on Tamerlane?
Are you Ortubule’s sister?
Are you Bajazet’s daughter?
Are you of Ottoman blood?
Perfidious woman, you lied.
This is what your hatred was leading to,
now I see your heart for what it has always been.
But why did you not first ask your enemy lover
to put your father to death,
so that you, as queen, could take the credit?
Here is my breast, here is my head; come, why hold back?
This is the one crime
that you have not yet committed.
But once I am dead, do not hope
to ever find peace on that throne:
I will come as a restless spirit, bringing terror to your dreams,
and your betrayed father will be your shame.
I will awaken and send after you the unhappy shades
of your mother and brother, who are now, perhaps, at rest,
sure of your hatred and of mine.
You are inhuman: a despairing father
asks his death of you and threatens you –
doesn’t that move you to pity, or to fear?
Then I shall go to beg for death elsewhere.
ASTERIA
Father, stop!
TAMERLANO
Is Asteria so weak
that the sound of impotent shouting leaves her trembling?
16
ASTERIA
Eccomi scesa.
TAMERLANO
Ah vile!
ASTERIA
Or perché sappia ognuno
quale al soglio n’andai, qual ne ritorno,
guardisi Asteria, e più di tutti fissa,
fissa in me gli occhi, o Tamerlano, e mira.
Quest’era il primo destinato amplesso
(Mostra uno stilo)
che portava fastosa Asteria al letto.
TAMERLANO
Siano di mille armati
Asteria e Bajazette posti in difesa:
piomberà sui lor capi
la giusta mia vendetta,
e punirò con cento morti e cento
nel padre e nella figlia il tradimento.
IRENE
core.
BAJAZET
Mostro indegno, dispietato senza fè.
ASTERIA
Morte al padre, oh Dio! Perché così barbara
sentenza?
TAMERLANO
Non è degno di clemenza.
Morte attendi.
BAJAZET
E morte voglio.
ASTERIA
Numi, aita, oh Dio! pietà.
IRENE
No, non sa che sia pietà.
BAJAZET
Io non voglio sua pietà.
TAMERLANO
No non merita pietà.
ASTERIA
Look, I have renounced the throne.
TAMERLANO
Coward!
ASTERIA
Father, you prevent my grand gesture
Now, so that everyone may know
why I accepted the throne, and why I am rejecting it:
let them look at Asteria, and more than anyone,
you, Tamerlane, look into my eyes and see.
This was to be the first embrace
(holding up a dagger)
that the fair Asteria bore to your bed.
TAMERLANO
Set a thousand-armed men
to guard Asteria and Bajazet:
upon their heads shall
my righteous vengeance fall,
and I shall punish with a hundred deaths and a hundred more
the treachery of father and daughter.
IRENE
So cruel! This is the love of a tyrant’s evil heart.
BAJAZET
Vile monster, desperate and faithless.
ASTERIA
O God, my father to die? Why such a savage sentence?
TAMERLANO
He deserves no mercy.
Death awaits you.
BAJAZET
And death is what I long for.
ASTERIA
O Gods, help, have mercy!
IRENE
No, he doesn’t even know what mercy is.
BAJAZET
I do not want his mercy.
TAMERLANO
He does not deserve mercy.
17
ASTERIA
Questa è troppo crudeltà.
IRENE
ASTERIA
This is too cruel.
IRENE
The harshness and cruelty of your heart will finally be satisfied.
BAJAZET
Our deaths will satisfy the harshness and cruelty of your heart.
18
ATTO TERZO
ACT THREE
SCENA 1 SCENE 1
BAJAZET
Figlia, siam rei: io di schernito sdegno,
tu d’amore sprezzato.
Vorrà il nostro nemico
vendicarsi dell’uno e placar l’altro.
ASTERIA
BAJAZET
Veder parmi, or che nel fondo
giù precipiti di Stige,
sangue illustre ed innocente,
gonfie andar le rapid’onde
abbattendo argini e sponde
all’orror di crudeltà.
Nel mirar sì ingiuste merci
già s’infuria e l’onda estolle
e di sdegno e d’ira bolle.
Assorbir bensì vorria,
e star seco in compagnia
chi nemico è di pietà.
BAJAZET
My daughter, we are both guilty: I, of mocking his anger,
you of despising his love.
Our enemy will want to have
vengeance on one, and to appease the other.
ASTERIA
The blame for this failed revenge is mine alone.
BAJAZET
Look, I have poison here:
all I have left of my vast store of treasures.
I will share it with you. And to give you the courage to use it,
I will give you half of my fearless heart.
ASTERIA
This is a welcome and precious gift,
coming from the hand of my father; this kiss is my thanks.
But in the dreadful ordeals that await me,
your death, father, would only serve
to make mine more grim.
BAJAZET
My daughter, at Tamerlane’s first attempt
to abuse you, drink it and die.
And at the first sign of his cruelty,
you will see me
take that deadly path before you –
or else I shall follow after.
ASTERIA
Noble father, I bow to your wishes.
BAJAZET
Now that you, in your innocence
and nobility, are about to plunge
to the depths of the Styx, I think I see
its swift-flowing waters rising in horror
at such cruelty, swollen into a flood
that sweeps all before it.
Seeing such virtue submitted to such injustice,
the river is enraged, the waters rise,
seething with contempt and fury.
How much more willingly would they
take into their embrace
one who was an enemy of mercy.
19
SCENA 2 SCENE 2
TAMERLANO
Andronico, il mio amore dallo sdegno d’Asteria
acquista lena.
ASTERIA
Prence, tacete.
ANDRONICO
No, che pria vuo’compir la mia protesta. Tenga il
tartaro pure tutti i vasti suoi doni, e ancor maggiori,
che per placar Asteria io gli rifiuto.
TAMERLANO
Or lo vedremo.
TAMERLANO
Andronicus, Asteria’s scorn has made my love all the stronger.
Tell her that my throne is still vacant, If she
wants to sit on the throne again, there are no impediments,
despite what she did.
If she sets aside her anger, I will forgive her after all.
ANDRONICO
(Courage, Andronicus!)
I too hope that Asteria will forget her rage –
but let it be for my sake.
ASTERIA
(How dare he!)
Don’t say a word, you evil man.
ANDRONICO
Please, don’t condemn me before you’ve heard me speak.
On behalf of Tamerlane
I sought your hand in marriage, your love,
but how I regret that request!
You punished it by your ill-fated consent,
and wouldn’t even tell me of your fateful decision.
Now, hate me though you will, I tell you
that I am Tamerlane’s rival: I love you.
ASTERIA
Stop, Prince, don’t say this.
ANDRONICO
No, before I finish my protest. The Tartar can keep
his wealth and gifts, as I refuse to attempt to persuade Asteria.
TAMERLANO
We’ll see about that.
Let Bajazet be beheaded, and Asteria given as bride
to the meanest of my slaves.
ASTERIA
So, a royal maiden…
TAMERLANO
Don’t argue, or I will make the sentence harsher.
ASTERIA
Sire, let your rage fall on my head, but forgive
my father who is not to blame.
If my face helped appease you before,
may it now help my father.
20
SCENA 3 SCENE 3
BAJAZET
Come, Asteria, tu a’ piè di Tamerlano?
Sorgi, non s’ha da veder prostrata
davanti al suo nemico una mia figlia.
TAMERLANO
seco venga Andronico, e miri
in Asteria i suoi scorni.
Se poi tal piace, all’amor suo ritorni.
Barbaro traditor,
privo d’amor, di fe’,
temi del mio furor:
amor tu nieghi a me?
No, trionfar non dei,
sarò sì qual tu sei, empio tiranno.
Odio, furor, velen,
per te sol nutro in sen
premio al tuo inganno.
BAJAZET
Asteria, what are you doing kneeling at Tamerlane’s feet?
Get up: no daughter of mine should be seen
prostrate before her enemy.
TAMERLANO
Bajazet, my fury now knows no bounds.
I tell you, you are no longer my only enemy,
Let Bajazet and Asteria be dragged to my banquet hall;
Andronicus shall go with them
to watch Asteria’s humiliation. If he still finds her
attractive after that, he can go back to his love.
Barbarous traitor,
I have lost both love and hope:
beware my fury.
Would you deny me love?
No, you shall not triumph.
I shall become like you: an evil tyrant.
For you, I harbour in my breast
only hatred, rage and venom:
the reward for your deception.
SCENA 4 SCENE 4
ANDRONICO
Spesso tra vaghe rose
di verde e molle prato
angue crudel s’ascose,
e il passaggier da quello
invan tentò scampar.
Tal io fuggir non posso,
l’amore e la pietà,
furore e crudeltà.
E pur contento io sono
lasciar grandezze e trono,
cara, per te adorar.
ANDRONICO
Often among the fair roses
of the gentle, verdant meadow
a cruel snake lies hidden;
and he who passes by
tries in vain to escape.
I too am trapped, unable to flee
from love and pity,
anger and cruelty.
And yet I am content
to leave behind greatness and kingship
for love of you, my beloved.
SCENA 5 SCENE 5
TAMERLANO
Eccoti, Bajazette,
dell’angusto ritiro
in cui t’avea già l’ira mia ristretto,
innanzi allo splendor delle mie mense.
Ne venga Asteria, e intenda
dal vincitor offeso il suo destino.
TAMERLANO
Bajazet, you have been brought here
from the narrow cell
where my anger had you confined:
you stand before the splendour of my table.
Let Asteria be brought here, to learn
her fate from the insulted conqueror.
ASTERIA
Eccomi: che si chiede?
ASTERIA
Here I am, what is your will?
21
TAMERLANO
Tosto ad Asteria un nappo,
e al basso impiego
davanti al suo signor pieghi il ginocchio
dell’orgoglio ottoman l’unica erede.
ANDRONICO
Ingiusto!
BAJAZET
Temerario!
ASTERIA
d’ambizion l’immensa sete estingui.
IRENE
Tamerlan, ferma il sorso.
TAMERLANO
Ancora qui la temeraria? E come?
Chi ti concesse tanto ardire?
IRENE
Irene. Sappi ch’entro quel nappo
ASTERIA
Bevi Tamerlan, vano sospetto
TAMERLANO
Give Asteria a wine-cup,
and in performing this lowly service,
let the sole heir of the proud Turk
bend the knee before her lord.
ANDRONICO
This is an injustice!
BAJAZET
Outrageous!
ASTERIA
(You gods who inspired me to strike this blow, guide my hand.)
Drink, mighty lord, drink,
and in this cup which Asteria brings you
may the vast thirst of your ambition be slaked.
IRENE
Tamerlane, do not drink it.
TAMERLANO
This brazen woman again? How did she get in here?
Who gave you leave to be so bold?
IRENE
Irene. Heed my words: that cup
contains your death. Listen to me: Asteria
has slipped into your drink a gift.
Coming from her hand, it can only be poison.
Know that it is Irene who speaks, and I am Irene.
TAMERLANO
You are Irene?
BAJAZET
Alas! My daughter has lost
her chance of revenge, and her last line of defence.
TAMERLANO
Be seated, Irene. And you, evil woman,
your pallor already declares your guilt, what have you to say?
ASTERIA
Drink, Tamerlane! Foolish suspicions
should not prevent royal lips from drinking
TAMERLANO
No, che sei disperata: o padre o amante
me n’assicuri pria.
Fa’ che l’assaggi l’uno o l’altro, e bevo.
TAMERLANO
No – you are a desperate woman. Either your father or your
Lover must convince me first.
Let one of them taste it, and then I will drink.
22
ASTERIA
Bevo a tuo dispetto e a la mia morte.
ANDRONICO
Sconsigliata, che tenti?
ASTERIA
Ah stolto, e che pretendi?
Mi togli a morte, e a tirannia mi rendi.
TAMERLANO
A’cenni miei sia custodita. Empia, due volte rea
d’enorme tradimento, onde incomincio il tuo
castigo?
Si segui il fiero al serraglio de’ schiavi;
ivi a momenti condotta Asteria,
BAJAZET
E il soffrirete d’onestade o numi?
La raccomando a voi, poiché a me resta
ASTERIA
I drink to your undoing and to my own death.
ANDRONICO
Reckless woman, what are you trying to do?
ASTERIA
You fool, what do you think you are doing?
You have saved me from death and delivered me
into the hand of the tyrant.
TAMERLANO
On my signal take her prisoner. She is doubly guilty
of monstrous betrayal. How shall I begin to punish you –
with death? It is not enough.
Let us begin with disgrace, and Bajazet can witness all.
Bring Asteria to the slaves’ quarters,
where he will witness her humiliation.
BAJAZET
Ye gods, defenders of virtue, will you allow this?
I commend her to you, for all that is left to me is the task
of snatching my miserable life out of his hands for ever.
Cruel, pitiless monster, I will come. to attack you
with a thousand Furies at my side to tear out your heart.
SCENA 6 SCENE 6
IRENE
Signor, fra tante cure, che fia d’Irene?
TAMERLANO
Irene sarà mia sposa.
Infin il Tamerlan la fè mantiene,
e se gli spiace Asteria, abbraccia Irene.
IRENE
IRENE
My lord, among all your cares, what is to become of Irene?
TAMERLANO
Irene shall be my bride.
At last Tamerlane shall honour his promise,
and if Asteria has displeased him, he will embrace Irene.
IRENE
I shall forget past insults,
And my happy destiny will be
to bestow upon my lord both life and throne.
In the company of my beloved, I shall see the soul of my soul,
the heart of my heart full of contentment.
And if ever I shall need to be far from him,
I shall spend every moment sighing in agony.
SCENA 7 SCENE 7
IDASPE
Signore, Bajazette ha bevuto il veleno.
Or lotta con la morte.
IDASPE
My lord, Bajazet has drunk poison.
He is now fighting for his life.
23
TAMERLANO
Bajazet?
IDASPE
Se n’avvidero appena i suoi custodi,
che l’infelice era vicino a morte.
TAMERLANO
TAMERLANO
Bajazet?
IDASPE
I have just learnt from his guards
that the wretched man is close to death.
TAMERLANO
I am sorry to hear it, though he was a daring enemy.
Andronicus, I offer you my friendship again, with new victories.
ANDRONICO
But… if you deny me Asteria…
TAMERLANO
This is too much!
IRENE
No sire, the father’s sacrifice should appease you.
ANDRONICO
I sacrifice my victories to you.
IRENE
And I ask his forgiveness to save you and my throne.
TAMERLANO
You ask in vain. Asteria is guilty twice over:
for the great hatred she bears me, and for being
Bajazet’s heir, if Bajazet is dead.
SCENA 8 SCENE 8
ASTERIA
del suo gran cuore in me, so custodirlo.
Io son l’unico avanzo dell’ira sua:
raccogli in me tutti i tuoi sdegni,
com’io raccolgo contro te in me sola
ASTERIA
Yes, he is dead, you tyrant,
I saw him die with my own eyes.
He is dead, but not so the Turks bear in duty
towards his enemy.
I am his heir.
With his dying glance, my father
entrusted me with this responsibility,
and I shall foster with great care
what little of his great and noble heart remains in me.
I am all that remains of his anger: all his indignation
is gathered together in me,
as I gathered within myself all the disdain and hatred
that my race bears toward you.
Look at me: the women who has twice
tried to kill you, and whose great crime is to have failed.
If my offences are not enough
to merit another death, at least give me back
the means by which I sought my revenge.
24
Rendimela, crudele,e al genitor m’invia
a placar l’ira sua con l’ombra mia.
Svena, uccidi, abbatti, atterra.
Piaghe, morte, strage, guerra
sempre in vita incontrerò.
E tu, padre, in me riposa;
dietro all’ombra generosa a momenti volerò.
Give it back to me, you cruel man, and send me to my father,
that my shade may bring peace to his.
Stab me, kill me, destroy me, strike me down.
While I live, I shall know only
wounds, death, slaughter and war.
And you, father: may you find your rest in me.
I shall soon fly to be united with your noble shade.
SCENA 9 SCENE 9
TAMERLANO
così l’odio placato e resi amici.
cominceremo oggi a regnar felici.
TUTTI
Coronata di gigli e di rose,
con l’amore ritorni la pace.
E fra mille facelle amorose
perda i lampi dell’odio la face.
TAMERLANO
You have won, and even more, friends,
the intensity of her suffering has won me over.
Bajazet’s death has already put an end to my anger.
I give her to you.
Receive from my hand the throne and your beloved.
Thus, shall hatred be transformed into friendship;
let us this day begin a reign of happiness.
ALL
Crowned with lilies and roses,
may peace return with love,
and may be the flame of hatred
be lost among a thousand flames of love.
