ANDRONICO Narralo, Idaspe, tu; sai ch’io non posso. IDASPE Il Tamerlano ha un altro amore in petto; vuol sul trono la figlia del nemico ottoman. IRENE Troppo grande è l ‘affronto IDASPE Signor, se tal lasciate partir Irene, asteria è già perduta. ANDRONICO Idaspe, e qual partito? IRENE Chi m’addita la via per chiamar al dover questo infedele? Chi m’assicura da nuovi insulti, e chi m’accerta poi che lo possa veder per vendicarmi? ANDRONICO You tell her, Idaspe; you know I can’t. IDASPE Tamerlane has another love in his heart. He wants to put the daughter of his Turkish enemy on the throne. IRENE This is a great insult. IDASPE Sir, if you allow Irene to leave, you will lose Asteria. ANDRONICO Idaspe, what should I do? IRENE Who will show me how to recall this faithless man to his duty? Who will protect me from further insults, and who will make sure that I can see him and demand my rights? ANDRONICO Io. IRENE Ed in qual forma? ANDRONICO Udite: ancora ignota voi siete al Tamerlano: fingetevi compagna o messaggiera della sprezzata Irene; pregate, minacciate: il tempo poi darà incontro opportun per iscoprirli. ANDRONICO I will. IRENE How? ANDRONICO Listen: Tamerlane has never met you. Pretend to be the companion of the despised Irene, or a messenger sent by her; Entreat him, threaten him; later the time will come to reveal yourself to him. ATTO SECONDO ACT TWO SCENA 1 SCENE 1 IDASPE Anch’il mar par che sommerga quella nave, che tu vedi dissipata da procelle. Poi la vedi, e par che s’erga presso l’altra in fra le stelle. IDASPE You saw the boat torn apart by the storm and swallowed up by the sea. But then you see it again, and it seems to have been raised up and set among the stars. SCENA 2 SCENE 2 ASTERIA Gloria, sdegno ed amore, arbitri del mio core, un solo istante permettete ch’io finga qui l’infedel; si colga di mie giuste vendette almeno il frutto. ANDRONICO Asteria, vi turbate? E che? Temete portarvi forse me presente a un trono? Per cui fu così pronto ail vostro voto? ASTERIA Non ho a temere nel portarmi a un soglio cui m’additaste poco fa il sentiero. ANDRONICO Ve l’additai perch’il fuggiste, o almeno credei che nol bramaste. Ma è troppo luminoso del Tamerlano il soglio per fuggirlo. Se poi l’offre un amante… ASTERIA Voi mio amante? Qual prova? Quella forse di gettarvi al partito del mio maggior nemico? Sapevate pur lódio che contro il Tamerlan nutre il mio sangue? ANDRONICO Sapeva l’odio sì, ma non l’amore con cui guardate il soglio. Or sodisfatta regnate, compiacetevi, ma pria sappiate che la vostra ambizzion funesta potrà costar la vita a un padre generoso, a un fido amante. ASTERIA Piano, Andronico, piano, non mi guida ambizione o amore del trono, ASTERIA Honour, scorn and love, you judges of my heart – just for a moment, let me act the faithless women. If only I could then reap the fruit of my righteous vengeance! ANDRONICO Asteria, are you troubled? Why? Perhaps you are afraid that you will ascend the throne right here in front of me? That you so easily accepted? ASTERIA I’m not afraid to take the path that you showed me. ANDRONICO I believed you would run from it, not desire it. But Tamerlane’s throne is far too tempting, especially when offered by a lover… ASTERIA You, my lover? On what evidence? You threw me into the arms of my worst enemy, knowing how much I hate Tamerlane. ANDRONICO I knew you hated him, but not that you desired the throne. Now you can reign and be happy, but know that your ambition could cost the life of your beloved father and faithful lover. ASTERIA Hush, Andronicus: I am not led by ambition, nor am I in love with the throne. ANDRONICO Quando ciò sia, protesterò altamente contro le chieste nozze, mi griderò nemico del Tamerlan: rifiuterò l’impero, alfin morrò, se il morir mio si brama. ANDRONICO If that is so, then I shall protest against these proposed marriages with all my strength. I shall shout out my enmity to Tamerlane: I shall refuse the empire, and even die, if I must. 10
