TAMERLANO
Andronico, il mio amore dallo sdegno d’Asteria
acquista lena.
Dille che il mio trono ancora è vuoto,
Che a salirvi di nuovo, fuor che quel che vi pose con
la sua stessa man,
non v’è altro inciampo.
che infin, s’ella si placa, io le perdono.
ANDRONICO
(Andronico, coraggio.)
Si plachi Asteria, ma per me si plachi.
ASTERIA
(Vedi l’ardito.)
Iniquo taci.
ANDRONICO
Deh non mi condannate pria d’ubbidirmi.
Chiesi e pregai
a pro del Tamerlan nozze ed affetti,
ma questa mia richiesta è il mio rimorso.
Voi la puniste col fatal consenso,
né del gran colpo mi voleste a parte.
Ora lo son dell’odio vostro, e dico
che son rival del Tamerlano, e v’amo.
ASTERIA
Prence, tacete.
ANDRONICO
No, che pria vuo’compir la mia protesta. Tenga il
tartaro pure tutti i vasti suoi doni, e ancor maggiori,
che per placar Asteria io gli rifiuto.
TAMERLANO
Or lo vedremo.
Troncasi il capo a Bajazet, e Asteria allo schiavo più
vil sia fatta sposa.
ASTERIA
Dunque, real donzella...
TAMERLANO
Non favellar, o la sentenza affretto.
ASTERIA
Deh, signor, su’l mio capo cada il vostro furor, ma al
mio grande padre perdonate una colpa che non è
sua, e quella forza ch’ebbe quest’infelice volto per
placarvi sinor, l’abbia il mio sangue.
TAMERLANO
Andronicus, Asteria’s scorn has made my love all the stronger.

ANDRONICO

ASTERIA

ANDRONICO
No, before I finish my protest. The Tartar can keep
his wealth and gifts, as I refuse to attempt to persuade Asteria.
TAMERLANO
We’ll see about that.
Let Bajazet be beheaded, and Asteria given as bride
to the meanest of my slaves.
ASTERIA
So, a royal maiden…
TAMERLANO
Don’t argue, or I will make the sentence harsher.
ASTERIA
Sire, let your rage fall on my head, but forgive
my father who is not to blame.
If my face helped appease you before,
may it now help my father.
