In sì torbida procella
cerco invano amica stella,
non ho porto, non ho sponda.
Sol fra scoglie ondeggio ed erro
e dal legno a cui m’afferro
mi respinge il vento e l’onda.
In this gloomy storm
I seek in vain a friendly star:
I find no port, no shore.
I can only drift, tossed among rocks,
and the wind and the waves tear me away
from the ship to which I cling.
SCENA 4 SCENE 4
ANDRONICO
Quel ciglio vezzosetto,
ch’inspira grazie e amore,
quel labbro morbidetto
ferito ha questo cor,
né trova pace.
Esser non vò ingrato,
ma sempre vò seguir
quel caro volto amato
che ognor mi fa languir,
e il cor mi sface.
ANDRONICO
Those charming little eyes
that inspire grace and love,
those soft little lips
have wounded my heart,
and I find no peace.
I don’t wish to be ungrateful,
but I want to pursue for ever
that dear, beloved face
for which I yearn without ceasing.
and which melts my heart.
SCENA 5 SCENE 5
ASTERIA
Or sì, fiero destino,
che prigioniera io sono.
Nella crudel giornata
che Tamerlan vinse mio padre in campo,
con la mia libertà perdei me stessa.
Mi sovviene allor quando,
a vista del mio pianto
Andronico il gran duce abbassò il brando.
Mi vide, il vidi, e parve
che chiedesse la vita
lui che veniva ad arrecar la morte.
Andronico! L’amai, ed amo;
or lo spietato sol pensa alla corona,
e me qui lascia alle catene, ingrato.
ASTERIA
Now, harsh fate,
I am truly a prisoner.
On that cruel day
when Tamerlane defeated my father in battle,
I lost not only my freedom, but my very self.
I remember how the great commander
Andronicus, seeing my tears,
lowered his sword.
He looked at me, I looked at him,
and it seemed as if he were begging me for life,
he who had come to bring me death.
Andronicus! I loved him, and I love him still.
Now, heartless, he thinks only of the crown;
the ingrate leaves me here in chains.
SCENA 6 SCENE 6
TAMERLANO
Non è più tempo, Asteria
di celarvi un segreto a cui legata
sta la vostra fortuna,
di Bajazet, d’Andronico, e la mia.
Oggi, se voi l’bramate, avran fine I miei sdegni, e al
genitore darò cortese e libertade, e pace.
ASTERIA
Forse Andronico ottenne da voi…
TAMERLANO
The time has come, Asteria,
to reveal to you a secret,
which will determine your fate, and the
fates of Bajazet, Andronicus and myself.
This conflict could end today, if you wish so.
You father would be free.
ASTERIA
Could it be that you have granted Andronicus…
