TAMERLANO
Ciò che brama il mio amor, bella tu chiedi. Tosto
uscirem da questo luogo al soglio, te lo prometto, e
in pegno ecco la mano.
IRENE
Fermate, o Tamerlan, che quella mano prima è
dovuta a Irene.
TAMERLANO
Quanto ardita è costei?
IRENE
Non arrossite tradir una Regina,
per poi tender la destra ad una schiava?
TAMERLANO
Donna, garristi assai
Son reo, lo so, ma la discolpa è questa.
Alfin le cedo un trono non minore del mio.
Si plachi e regni.
Cruda sorte, avverso fato!
Sono infido, sono ingrato,
ma se gl’occhi di costei
di mia colpa sono rei,
freni Irene il suo furor.
Il suo sdegno fia placato,
ch’io le dono sposo e trono,
che del mio non è minor.
TAMERLANO
You ask only what I desire. Let us leave
this place quickly -here is my hand as a pledge.
IRENE
Stop, Tamerlane: that hand is owed first to Irene.
TAMERLANO
How bold this woman is!
IRENE
Do you not blush with shame to betray a queen
in order to offer your hand in marriage to a slave?
TAMERLANO
Woman, that’s enough scolding from you.
I am guilty, I know, but I say this in my defence:
I offer her a throne which is no less than mine.
Let her be satisfied, and reign.
Cruel destiny – Fate is against me!
I am faithless, I am ungrateful,
but since those eyes of hers
are to blame for my sin,
let Irene restrain her rage.
Let her anger be calmed,
for I offer her a husband and a throne
no lesser than my own.
SCENA 5 SCENE 5
ASTERIA
Senti, chiunque tu sia che a pro d’Irene tanto
dicesti…
IRENE
E che? Pretendi forse
allo sposo usurpato aggiunger nuovi insulti?
ASTERIA
Conosci pria il cor d’Asteria,
e apprendi che me non chiama al trono
o brama di regnar, o molle affetto.
IRENE
Che dunque?
ASTERIA
Dille alfin che non parta:
forse la sua fortuna,
quand’io dispiaccia al tartaro, risorge;
ASTERIA
Listen, whoever you are - you were so quick to speak out
on Irene’s behalf…
IRENE
And what of it? Or do you have
new insults to add to the injury of stealing a husband?
ASTERIA
First tell her what is in Asteria’s heart:
she must know that I am not attracted to the throne
to be queen nor any tender feeling.
IRENE
What is it, then?
ASTERIA
Tell her not to leave:
perhaps her star will rise again
when I fail to please the Tartar, will revive;
