ASTERIA<br />
Gloria, sdegno ed amore,<br />
arbitri del mio core, un solo istante<br />
permettete ch’io finga qui l’infedel; si colga<br />
di mie giuste vendette almeno il frutto.<br />
ANDRONICO<br />
Asteria, vi turbate? E che? Temete<br />
portarvi forse me presente a un trono?<br />
Per cui fu così pronto ail vostro voto?<br />
ASTERIA<br />
Non ho a temere nel portarmi a un soglio cui<br />
m’additaste poco fa il sentiero.<br />
ANDRONICO<br />
Ve l’additai perch’il fuggiste, o almeno credei che nol<br />
bramaste. Ma è troppo luminoso del Tamerlano il<br />
soglio per fuggirlo. Se poi l’offre un amante…<br />
ASTERIA<br />
Voi mio amante? Qual prova? Quella forse di<br />
gettarvi al partito del mio maggior nemico? Sapevate<br />
pur lódio che contro il Tamerlan nutre il mio sangue?<br />
ANDRONICO<br />
Sapeva l’odio sì, ma non l’amore con cui guardate il<br />
soglio. Or sodisfatta regnate, compiacetevi, ma pria<br />
sappiate che la vostra ambizzion funesta potrà<br />
costar la vita a un padre generoso, a un fido amante.<br />
ASTERIA<br />
Piano, Andronico, piano,<br />
non mi guida ambizione o amore del trono,<br />
ASTERIA<br />
Honour, scorn and love,<br />
you judges of my heart – just for a moment,<br />
let me act the faithless women. If only I could<br />
then reap the fruit of my righteous vengeance!<br />
ANDRONICO<br />
Asteria, are you troubled? Why? Perhaps you are afraid<br />
that you will ascend the throne right here in front of me?<br />
That you so easily accepted?<br />
ASTERIA<br />
I’m not afraid to take the path that you showed me.<br />
ANDRONICO<br />
I believed you would run from it, not desire it.<br />
But Tamerlane’s throne is far too tempting,<br />
especially when offered by a lover…<br />

You, my lover? On what evidence? You threw<br />
me into the arms of my worst enemy, knowing<br />
how much I hate Tamerlane.<br />
ANDRONICO<br />
I knew you hated him, but not that you desired the throne.<br />
Now you can reign and be happy, but know that your ambition<br />
could cost the life of your beloved father and faithful lover.<br />
ASTERIA<br />
Hush, Andronicus:<br />
I am not led by ambition, nor am I in love with the throne.<br />
ANDRONICO<br />
Quando ciò sia, protesterò altamente<br />
