Founded by Allan Dick, one of New Zealand’s most notable motoring journalists, NZ Classic Driver’s editorial mission has been to write about classic cars and historical motorsport in as entertaining a manner as possible. Allan Dick edited and published NZ Classic Driver until late 2011 when Tony Haycock stepped into the role. Classic Driver’s current editor, Allan Walton, become the magazine’s third editor when he took over in 2016. As well as featuring some of New Zealand’s best classic cars, NZ Classic Driver’s goal has always been to preserve local motor racing history by talking to the personalities involved, examining and writing about the cars themselves and preserving their stories for both present and future generations. Now with 100 editions under its belt, it is clear that this approach has served the magazine well. This special collectors’ edition celebrating the magazine’s centenary also offers readers a chance to win. The team has come up with six of their favourite classic cars – ranging from a Mini Cooper to a Corvette Stingray, and want readers to have their say by selecting their own favourite car. Popular Tiguan spearheads VW range TO LEARN the Tiguan was Volkswagen’s biggest selling model in New Zealand took me quite by surprise. You see, I would have thought that mantle belonged to Golf or even the new T-Cross, but I guess with the sport utility market buoyant with mid-size wagons the Tiguan would slot into the realm of a desirable purchase. Of course, there’s no doubt the Golf over time would still be Volkswagen’s biggest selling model in New Zealand, but just at present the Tiguan is selling in large numbers. Volkswagen has just released a facelifted Tiguan and it can only increase the affection Kiwis have for it. Up front there is a new grille, lights and bumper, with similar treatment at the rear. There’s a raft of new kit inside, more so items unseen with extra safety additions and the inclusion of a new MIB-3 infotainment system, it features app-connect (wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay) allowing you to seamlessly connect compatible apps from your smartphone. In terms of mechanical difference, not a lot has changed, there are four models in the Tiguan line-up, two front-wheel-drive models with a 1.4-litre engine and two four-wheel-drive models with a 2-litre engine, both petrol-fed and turbocharged. The range starts at $46,990 and ends at $68,990. The evaluation car was the range-topping TSi R-Line 4WD with the 1984cc engine. As a matter of interest, I have had a few kilometres in the 1.4-litre model and I can report that that engine is far from underwhelming, it’s much the same engine that is in the Golf and it is a feisty little brute that punches well above its weight. In fact, it would be the engine I would choose. However, the 2-litre engine is also rather intriguing, it comes in a choice of two power outputs – 132kW or 162kW. The R-Line model gets the higher power output, and if you add in grunty 350Nm of torque (available from 1500 to 4400rpm) it is strong and extremely capable. Mention must also be made of the area where power is developed, its peak arrives at just 4500rpm and spreads to 6200rpm, that being the case there is no drop off of performance, the engine simply pulls from nowhere and doesn’t lag across the entire rev band. In terms of acceleration the Tiguan in this form will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 8.2sec, and if you are making a highway overtake it will scamper DESIRABLE: Large car comfort packaged into a mid-size sport utility vehicle. VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN TSI: Four models with two or four-wheel-drive options. from 80 to 120km/h in 5.5sec. Drive is sent through a seven-speed direct shift transmission, this is my preferred gearbox, it’s sort of a cross between a traditional torque converter type and continuously variable transmission. The best way I can describe it is that’s like a manual gearbox with a robotised clutch, there are only two pedals so you treat it exactly as you would any automatic. However, there is a Tiptronic function (gearshift paddles) and sport mode if you want the engine to hold higher revolutions. Volkswagen also rates the high power engine with an 8.3-litre per 100km combined cycle average. At 100km/h on the highway the engine is turning over at just 1800rpm registering a healthy 5.8l/100km figure. After a long drive and some use on suburban streets the Tiguan’s trip computer was showing 9l/100km. By my reckoning these are good results. The Tiguan is a purposeful family wagon. It has large car comfort packaged into a midsize that drives and rides with comfort, along with presenting the driver with an informative driving sensation. I took the evaluation car on my usual mid-Canterbury run through to Glenroy, returning to the city via Dunsandel and • Price – Volkswagen Tiguan TSi R-Line 4WD, $68,990 • Dimensions – Length, 4511mm; width, 1850mm; height, 1635mm • Configuration – Fourcylinder, four-wheel-drive, 1984cc, 162kW, 350Nm, seven-speed automatic • Performance – 0-100km/h, 8.2sec • Fuel usage – 8.3/100km Lincoln, the Tiguan provides a relaxing driving experience and all those on board would find it that way. On the seal it glides through the air with quiet ease and is capable when presented with a quick corner or two. The Tiguan is very car-like, there is no presence of height nor bulk, it feels lithe and spirited. The Tiguan in R-Line specification rides on high quality 19in Michelin tyres and they are certainly up for a cornering challenge. They don’t moan under pressure and combine to give the driver positive information as to what is happening in relation to the road surface. I took the evaluation car off the seal and onto a clay-based track just to get a feel for the 4Motion four-wheel-drive network. There wasn’t any elevation but a small ford at the end of the track made for a slippery departure, I could feel the driveline engaging so that wheelspin in any corner was eliminated. In terms of what you get for your outlay, the Tiguan comes very well equipped, and the controls and functions are intuitive. Major features include leather trim with heated and electrically adjustable seats, satellite navigation, keyless entry and ignition, radar cruise control and head-up display. The new infotainment system responds quickly to input, and pairing of devices is something that even the old generation can relate to. My old iPhone was readily accepted and functionality within the system is deep. One of my wife’s relatives is in the market for a new SUV. She wouldn’t buy anything other than a German car and was looking at premium brands. I suggested to her that Volkswagen has a solid range of SUVs, small to big – T-Cross to Touareg. It’s something she hadn’t considered, but she is now looking at them closely, and certainly the price compared to the competition is hugely attractive. I hope she goes with my recommendation and buys into a Tiguan.
