Anzac tribute by budding artists<br />

Awide variety of techniquesand<br />

mediums were used by budding artists<br />

from fourlocalHurunuiSchoolsinan<br />

art competition portraying aspects of<br />

remembering and commemorating<br />

AnzacDay.<br />

Judges Kevin Roberts (Amberley<br />

RSA),and Pam Harvey(Amberley<br />

LionsClub) said studentshad put alot<br />

of thoughtand hard work into<br />

interpreting the theme,<br />

‘‘Understanding the meaningofAnzac<br />

Day’’.<br />

They saiditwas extremelydifficult<br />

to single out one winnerfromthe<br />

senior and junior classes, of each<br />

school in some cases,sothey had<br />

givenawhole­class award.<br />

The senior winneratthe Waipara<br />

School was Eden,with a<br />

3­dimensionalmodeldepicting all<br />

aspects commemoratedinAnzac Day<br />

observances,whileAlice was the<br />

junior winner, with abox lid scene of<br />

apoppy wreath and awar memorial<br />

listing the names of localpeople who<br />

gave theirlives.<br />

From Broomfield the wholeMatai<br />

classwas the senior winnerfor a<br />

collaborative art work depicting a<br />

soldier representing the 28th Maori<br />

Battalion.<br />

The junior winners werethe Te<br />

Koukaclass for adisplay of poppies<br />

painted using two different painting<br />

techniques,onadie­wash background<br />

imprintedwith thewords of several<br />

stanzas of The Ode to the Fallen.<br />

At Leithfield School two junior<br />

The winners ... Pupils from the Broomfield, Leithfield, Amberley and Waipara Schools at<br />

the prize giving. James Drewery (RSA president), and Pam Harvey, (Lions Club president)<br />

Trishy, with her neatly grouped<br />

poppies standing straight and tall,<br />

won in the new entrant class, while<br />

the Year3/4 winner was Lucas, with a<br />

structured painting of adark<br />

silhouetteofasoldier against a<br />

coloured background.<br />

Sylvia’s picture of awhite crossset<br />

in the context of agrassy poppy field<br />

and the sun rising from behind the<br />

hills, was the Amberley School’s<br />

seniorwinner, while the whole new<br />

entrant classatthe school was the<br />

juniorwinner. The new entrants had<br />

drawn red poppies withpencil.<br />

The overall winners acrossthe four<br />

schools were:­<br />

Senior: Broomfield School’s Matai<br />

class.<br />

Junior: Amberley School’s new<br />

entrant class.<br />

The entries were displayedon<br />

AnzacDay during the dawn service.<br />

Six <strong>May</strong>oral TaskforceForJobs youths<br />

will be lendingthe council ahelping hand<br />

with theannualchore.Theyarespending<br />

four to six weeks clearing metre boxes,<br />

reporting faultsand documentingwater<br />

usage throughout the district. The youths<br />

will visit Leithfield Beach, Amberley,<br />

Culverden, Hawarden, Waikari, Hanmer<br />

Springs and the Waiau township.<br />
