Volunteers need help
to keep graveyards tidy
• By Lydia Lewis
PUBLIC AND community-run
cemeteries around the country
are struggling to recruit staff and
volunteers.
One Christchurch volunteer
has been holding the fort alone,
but he, like many others, needs
help.
Plans are in the works by the
national cemeteries body to prop
up a recruitment campaign for
burial places managed by local
councils, trusts and community
groups.
Out the back of a well-manicured
2ha lot at St Paul’s Anglican
Church in Papanui is teacher
and volunteer Julian Dent.
“I think people seem to be
too interested in themselves
[other] than community . . . we
would love some help. Think of
a garden, and this is a big one,”
he said.
About 15 years ago, the graveyard
was unkept with overgrown
gravestones that were covered in
moss.
“It was out of control, I thought
. . . mmm, I can do something to
help here, the next week, I was
asked to look after one row and
one row eventually turned into
the whole cemetery.”
Ever since then he has been
volunteering at the graveyard
where many notable Cantabrians
and war heroes are buried.
WE ALL seem to be behaving
ourselves this holidays.
That is the report card of the
Christchurch North Community
Patrol, with chairman Sam Hall
describing the summertime situation
as “pretty
good.”
Park and
picnic areas
have been on
the patrol radar,
standard for this
time of year.
“We haven’t
actua ly had to
report anything
from the picnic areas around,”
Ha l said.
“It was a l very family-orientated,
so it’s been quite good.”
More family groups than usual
seemed to be out, possibly because
the Covid-19 pandemic was preventing
people from leaving town
for a holiday, he said.
Being a frequent presence
was also helpful in deterring
incidents.
December and January were
also the time of year the patrol
focused on monitoring schools,
but no issues had arisen there
either.
Another summertime staple
was fire danger patrol.
No decision
yet to
appeal
declining of
rehabilitation
facility
• By Fiona E lis
THE DEPARTMENT of
Corrections has until February 9
to appeal after permission to build
a contentious rehabilitation centre
for violent offenders in St Albans
was declined.
However, it is remaining tightlipped
on whether or not it is likely
to do so.
Last week the Bristol Street
Resource Consent Hearing panel
declined to grant resource consent
for the Bristol St facility, fo lowing
a hearing in November.
The proposal would have seen
up to 12 men serving sentences
of home detention at 14 Bristol St
while participating in a violenceprevention
programme. Men
with significant untreated mental
health issues would not be eligible
to participate in the programme.
In their decision, city council
appointed commissioners Anthony
Hughes-Johnson QC and Ken
Lawn said they were not satisfied
the site was appropriate for such a
facility.
Corrections acting regional
commissioner Chris O’Brien-
Smith did not answer Nor’West
New’s question on whether an
appeal would be made, but said
corrections would spend the
next few weeks reflecting on the
commissioners’ findings.
St Margaret’s students find success in
economic development competition
ST MARGARET’S College
has scooped two of the top
three prizes in the inaugural
Canterbury Economic
Development Challenge.
It was the only school to field
two of the six teams in the
national final after two earlier
rounds of competition.
Run by Canterbury
University in conjunction with
Christchurch NZ, the fledgling
competition marked 100 years
of teaching for UC’s Business
School. It was originally slated
for 2020 but delayed until this
year because of Covid-19.
The challenge was to present
an idea, in video format, for
an economic development
project for ChristchurchNZ that
could enhance the economy
of Canterbury and improve its
living standards. It was open to
all secondary school students
in New Zealand and to UC
students.
SMC year 12 students Jessie
Peng and Jessica Geng won
first prize for their proposal
of a public private partnership
between Environment
Canterbury and Canterbury
farmers to use drones for water
quality sampling and application
of fertilisers.
They believed the partnership
would provide significant cost
PROBLEM-SOLVERS: (Left to right) – Chloe Taylor, Jordan Silcock, Jessie Peng and Jessica Geng.
saving for farmers and would
be a revenue stream for ECan.
The accurate water quality data
would help to improve water
quality in the province.
The two students are
part of SMC’s International
Baccalaureate Diploma, an
internationally recognised
two-year qualification that
encourages students to direct
their own learning pathway and
develop skills and confidence to
make a lasting difference.
Year 13’s Chloe Taylor and
Jordan Silcock, studying NCEA,
were placed third, as well as
winning best video pitch.
Chloe and Jordan proposed
the ‘Te Ōtautahi Wira’,
the Christchurch wheel, a
Canterbury version of the
London Eye. They said it
would be a major tourist
attraction, drawing domestic
and international tourists to the
central city, providing valuable
revenue for local businesses
and ‘Te Otautahi Wira’
shareholders.
Andrea Drayton, SMC’s
curriculum leader of business
studies, said the girls’ economic
studies have helped them
develop critical thinking skills to
solve real-world problems.
“They had creative ideas
and each team worked
collaboratively playing to
their strengths – both teams
continuously improved and
refined their challenge concepts
following feedback from their
teachers and UC mentors.”
Drayton says economics is a
popular choice at SMC for both
IB and NCEA students because
of its real-world applications
and range of tertiary study
options including a Bachelor
of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts
and/or a Bachelor of Science.
Said executive principal Diana
Patchett: “We are delighted
to have been a part of this
inaugural national competition,
which challenged our students
to realise solutions to obstacles
through collaboration, curiosity
and flexible thinking, and
further prepares them to
contribute to the exciting
innovations under way in
Canterbury and nationwide.”
Food truck venture proves to be a hit
• By Mick Jensen
A FOOD truck alley initiative
run through the Mt Pleasant
Community Centre has proven
popular, with plans to expand
and refine it next season.
To celebrate the end of a
successful first round a final food
truck alley will run on Queen’s
Birthday (June 6) from 4-7pm,
and the Pleasant Mountain Boys
will be playing.
The food trucks will return
for a new season on September
25.
A collection of up to a dozen
food stalls have set up on Sunday
afternoons in the centre car park
since March 20 and tempted
visitors with the likes of chicken,
stacked burgers, waffles, Thai
food, crepes, vegan burgers and
real fruit ice cream.
Community centre market
manager Derek McCullough
said the food alley had been
run as a trial and as a Sunday
dinner option for people passing
by.
‘‘There used to be a pizza bus
here years ago and with the
Sunday market only running
from 9.30am until 12.30pm
we saw an opportunity to
provide food in the late
afternoon.’’
McCullough said the food
venture had been very successful
and had run from 4pm-8pm
(more recently until 7pm because
of the shorter days).
POPULAR: The food truck alley at the Mt Pleasant Community Centre will celebrate a
successful first season with one final offering before shutting up shop until September.
There were plans to expand
on the site next season, increase
the range of what was on offer
and to lay on regular musical
entertainment, he said.
Because it had been mostly
takeaways, there had been a lot
of used containers and plans
were now afoot to recycle and
mulch them, he said.
The noise from food generators
is also set to be addressed and an
electricity hook up for traders is
being investigated.
McCullough said the location
lent itself to family picnicking
because it was right next to
the reserve and playground.
FOOD TRUCK ALLEY: Chris
Geary’s Smoke n Barrel is
one of 11 food trucks that
set up in the Mt Pleasant
Community Centre carpark
on Sundays from 4-7pm.
He said site fees paid by traders
went back to the community
centre, which was unique in that
it was independently owned by
the community and had to pay
its own way.

HELPING HAND: About 250 volunteers attended the
planting day at QE2 on Sunday morning.
Planting day proves a popular way
to counter climate change
• By Emily Moorhouse
A PLANTING day at the QE2
grounds has been described as a
great success with a turnout of
250 volunteers.
The event, organised by Eco
Action Nursery Trust, saw 3000
plants planted in just under two
hours with help from 20 schools,
locals and the New Brighton
Volunteer Fire Brigade.
“The general vibe of the place
was very positive,
lots of friendly
chat and smiles as
people went about
their planting with
their families, it
was great,” said
trust chair David David
Newton.
Newton
The group planted totara and
kahikatea, which Newton said
would eventually become towering
canopy trees, forming an essential
part of the New Zealand
bush ecosystem.
“I never expect anyone to
turn up, to be frank, it’s always
marvellous that so many people
do turn up, we couldn’t do it
without them of course. I’m
incredibly grateful that people
think its a worthwhile way to
spend two hours on a Sunday
morning,” Newton said.
The planting day was the
first of four that will see 12,000
student-grown native plants and
trees put in the ground.
Newton said the days gave
students a “physical outlet in the
face of global climate change”.
“It’s one of the few actions they
can take which is practical and
obvious, growing a forest that
will last for generations in a permanent
position in Christchurch
that they can point at in their
dotage to say, well, we tried.”
The next planting day will
be at the QE2 grounds on June
19, with the following two at
Chimera Cres on August 21 and
September 18.
Old Waimakariri Bridge is
scheduled to start today.
City council road maintenance
contractors will be on site after
receiving specialised hardwood
timber that meets the safety
standard grade.
“The new timber is currently
being cut to size to match the
existing posts and replace
the damaged railing on the
bridge,” city council city streets
maintenance manager Steve Guy
said.
“Contractors will be at the
bridge removing and disposing
of the broken posts, then
installing the 10 new posts and
rails.”
The work should take about a
week to complete. The majority
He has been labelled a “super
gardener” by the church’s warden
Jennifer Barry.
“He comes in, he mows the
lawns, checks the plants, we’ve
got about 100 roses that need
pruning, bark needs to be
spread,” she said.
Dent is 78, and his extensive
knowledge of the grounds is irreplaceable.
“We have several very sad
graves where, for example, three
of the work will take place
from the riverbed so is
dependent on weather and
river conditions.
“The current detour will
remain in place while we’re
repairing the bridge. So
motorists travelling northbound
towards Kaiapoi will be able
to use the bridge,” Guy said.
If northbound traffic was
detoured it would require
motorists to cross four lanes of
traffic on Main North Rd, so
detouring southbound traffic
creates a shorter and safer option
for road users.
“We know this work is
disruptive and we’re working
with our contractors to ensure
it is done as quickly as possible,”
he said.
sons died in World War 1 and
one came back and he died,
so four sons completely wiped
out.”
He is keen to start passing on
his experience so the next generation
can take over, but that is a
problem.
“There is not a next generation
taking over the locally run
cemeteries. A lot of these
cemeteries are staffed by
volunteers, normally locals,”
said Hayden Parr, chair of the
Collective.
It is so bad, the collective
has been looking at starting a
national awareness campaign.
“To actually make people
aware that this is a really rewarding
career and it exists in the first
place,” Parr said.
“A lot of people don’t have a lot
of things to do with cemeteries
until the unfortunate time they
need one.”
Parr encourages anyone looking
for work to give their local
cemetery a call because working
in a graveyard may just end up
being the most rewarding career
of their life.
“I’ve been doing this over
a decade now and I can’t
even begin to count the
number of families I have
helped in the hardest time of
their life.”
He believes a sense of ‘duty
of care’ has diminished over
the years with people no longer
feeling connected to their communities.
Barry reminded people that
everyone has a role to play.
“We are all sad when we see a
graveyard that is not looked after,
but unless we take that sadness
and convert it into labour it
doesn’t really mean much,” she
said.
“I do it because I love it and
I respect these people who are
buried here,” Dent said.
Community gardens’ grateful for compost
• By Emily Moorhouse
TWENTY-TWO tonnes of
“gold” in the form of compost
has been donated to community
gardens following a shortage.
Forty-one community gardens
around the city will benefit from
1200 bags of compost to help
grow produce, donated by Tui
Garden Products.
Canterbury
Community
Gardens Association
capacity
builder Rachel
Vogan said the
donation was
Rachel
Vogan
“crazy” and
has been wellreceived
by all of
the community
gardens around the city.
“It’s literally like gold for the
gardens because we can’t grow
good crops without getting
good nutrition into the ground,”
Vogan said.
Vogan was approached by Tui
after the bags of expired compost,
and strawberry and vegetable
mix were discovered. They
couldn’t be sold so the company
asked if the community gardens
could use it.
Because the compost goes
straight into the ground and the
community gardens follow all
the health and safety procedures
Vogan said the compost would
be fine to use.
“It’s better than getting money,
it’s what we need to help grow
our food, so it’s amazing,” she
said.
She said there is a huge issue
with shortage of compost for
community gardens, especially
with the uncertain future of the
organics processing plant in
Bromley.
That has a big impact on community
gardens because we’re
really short of compost to put in
the ground and without being
able to feed the soil it’s really
hard to keep feeding people,”
Vogan said.
Vogan said it was a “juggling
act” getting the compost to
each community garden as the
association didn’t have access
Left: A Bryndwr Community Garden volunteer
spreads the compost over produce. Innes Ward
councillor Pauline Cotter helped move some of the
bags.
to delivery trucks or a depot to
store the compost.
Luckily, Owens Transport
donated two delivery trucks
and drivers for a couple of
hours to deliver the 26 pallets of
compost to the Wai-ora Trust,
which offered its forklift and
space to store the compost for
other community gardens to
collect.
Each of the 41 community
gardens can take up to 22 bags
of compost, seeing garden members
filling up their cars to the
brim.
Vogan said in spring, a garden
event will be held and the
leftover compost mix will be
used for that.
Let the Sun Shine In
Nestled in a quiet, convenient neighbourhood in the heart of Somerfield, this wellmaintained
three-bedroom home will appeal to many. From the snug, north-facing aspect
to the single level, low maintenance brick construction, there is much to recommend
this picturesque property to buyers seeking peace of mind. The sunny yellow front door
hints at the warm welcome waiting within, where innate climate comfort is bolstered by
partial double glazing and a cosy heat pump. Interconnected living and dining enjoy a
valuable sense of separation from the updated kitchen where keen chefs are pampered
by contemporary style and quality appliances atop handsome timber floors. Sliding doors
allow every drop of winter sun to be easily experienced from the sheltered deck and vast
courtyard fringed by low-maintenance greenery, with no need for a lawnmower. Each
of the double bedrooms features the convenience of a built-in wardrobe while the wellappointed
bathroom and a double internal access garage contribute further to the appeal
of this delightful home. Superbly situated and with easy access to a host of facilities
including Colombo Street’s eateries and string of retail selections, prized zoning for
Somerfield School and Cashmere High School reinforces the area’s long held popularity.
Expected to attract considerable interest from a wide range of buyers, a looming
auction date means the sale of this property is imminent and your earliest inspection is
encouraged.
Crispy mallard pancakes
Ingredients
2 mallard legs
2 mallard breasts
450g duck fat
½ tsp sesame seed oil
1 Tbsp sweet soy sauce
Pancakes:
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 cup milk
2 pinches salt
25g butter
To serve:
1 Tbsp cranberry and prune
BBQ sauce
1 spring onion, sliced
¼ cucumber, sliced
1 tsp tamari roasted sunflower
seeds
Directions
In a steamer, place the duck legs
on to the bottom shelf and the
breasts on the top shelf. Steam the
duck for 1 hour.
Into a deep hot frying pan,
add your duck fat. Once the fat
has reached frying temperature
(180degC), carefully place the
duck legs and breasts into the
frying pan using tongs. Deep fry
for 10 minutes. Remove the duck
from the hot fat, placing it into
a bowl. Lightly drizzle sesame
seed oil and sweet soy sauce over
the duck. Once cooled, shred the
meat off the legs and breasts using
two forks, being mindful to avoid
sharp leg bones.
To make the pancakes, whisk
egg, flour and milk together for
5-10 minutes to get as much
air into the mixture as possible.
If needed, add extra milk one
tablespoon at a time until a silky,
runny consistency is achieved.
Add salt to finish the batter. In
a warm frying pan, melt a knob
of butter and add 3 Tbsp of the
pancake batter to make 1 pancake.
Use the back of the spoon to
form a pancake shape. Cook for 3
minutes on both sides.
To assemble the pancake:
spread BBQ sauce over the base,
place spring onions, cucumber
and sunflower seeds in the centre.
Place the deep fried duck on top
with a drizzle more BBQ sauce.
Fold pancake and eat.
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
regions by arrangement.
The importance
of air quality
The quality of the air
we breathe affects our
health and ability to
perform. We breathe in
and out approximately
20,000 litres of air every
day. It is therefore very
important to ensure
good air quality indoors
through adequate
ventilation. Ventilation
is the process of air
exchange to provide the
necessary air quality that
meets the needs of the
occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen
with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness
in the room and occupants can feel drowsy.
Invisible harmful substances like a high
content of dust and tobacco smoke are
harmful and can cause various diseases.
Even bad smells can cause discomfort or
irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s
easy to open windows for cross ventilation,
however as winter approaches, we start to
shut up out houses to trap in the heat and
as a result, air quality can decline.
Ventilation includes both the exchange
of air to the outside as well as circulation
of air within the building. It is one of the
most important factors for maintaining
acceptable indoor air quality in buildings.
Filtered air supply for summer and filtered
and warmed air in winter creates a healthy
environment in which to live and work.
In cases with poor or insufficient air
intake from outside, the oxygen content
decreases, humidity and dustiness levels
increase. If exhaust ventilation is not
provided or it is not effective, polluted air,
smells, humidity and harmful substances
are not removed.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required air exchange for your
building requirement. Smooth-Air offers
a wide range of ventilation equipment,
from air vents to ducting for fans, for both
the commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of fans and
ventilation components in-store but they
can also provide innovative solutions
Keeping It Real: How To Tend To Indoor Plants
The purpose of displaying indoor plants
is to not only add vibrancy and life to
your interior but equally to improve
air quality and enhance psychological
wellbeing — for the viewer and carer.
However, for your plants to look the
part and householders to receive their
visual and health benefits, it’s important
to maintain natural greenery at its most
verdant.
With a little regular effort and ongoing
TLC, even the most time-poor green
thumbs can ensure that interior plants
reflect their natural glory.
Fast facts
Plant owners do not need to be expert
botanists. All that is required of them as
caretakers is to consider the hardiness of
the plant, its suitability for variations in
indoor temperatures (including heating
and air-conditioning demands), light
requirements, air circulation, feeding,
weeding or pruning and repotting.
Soul food in the giving
In these post-pandemic times, tending to
plants can be a balm to the soul. Adopting
a daily plant care routine requires
minimal time but offers maximum gain.
Indoor plants often starved of natural
light and fresh air, require regular
watering. Dropping plant food in your
watering can is also recommended every
third or fourth watering.
Making the rounds is an enjoyable
exercise for your plants and the waterer
alike. While doing so, you can either
reduce the supply or forgo entirely if the
Let’s celebrate - the healthy homes new
heating calculator has taken effect!
I mentioned a few weeks back that we
were all waiting with bated breath for
the 12th May when the changes to the
healthy homes standards took effect, and
I am pleased to report that it was worth
waiting for, but, like a lot of legislation
there is certainly some fine print which is
frustrating, and makes little sense!
Let’s start with the positive. We have had
a couple of brand new properties where
heating reports were previously failed
due to the heating capacity, and when
re-calculated they are not only sneaking
in, but now complying by on average
2-3 KW, which is an enormous change.
There is however a timeframe around
this as the report can only be updated
to reflect the new heating requirement
if it is recalculated within 90 days of the
soil is still damp.
You should also
examine the
leaves, giving
the pot a turn
if it needs it,
recognising
and celebrating
new growth
as you preen,
fuss and tend to
your treasured
greenery
throughout its
life cycle.
For a methodical task with instant visual
gratification, the trimming process is
next on your to-do list. This is an ideal
weekend project, as it is designed to get
everyone involved and provide your
plants with a new lease on life.
Keeping tired foliage in trim condition
Restoring your indoor plants to their
trimmest condition is a matter of
regularly pruning dead or dying leaves.
This task will not only improve the health
and livelihood of seasonally weary
greenery but removing withered leaves
also helps prevent pests from making
their home in your plants.
Wait at least until a leaf is fully yellow
and it pulls easily away from the plant
before taking it off. A leaf that’s only
partially yellow means that the plant is
still absorbing the leaf’s nutrients. But
brown leaves and brown leaf tips can be
trimmed with impunity.
commencement of the tenancy.
The Government did this to stop any
landlords holding off from increasing
the heating in their rentals until the new
calculation came into effect on 12th May,
so essentially if you are a day out you will
not comply!
Now, if your brain works logically, you
will no doubt feel just as I do about this
bureaucracy, and so try to think outside
the box a little, but unfortunately the
law is the law, and failure to comply
could result in a hefty fine if you don’t
comply. I have spoken to both of our
healthy homes inspectors and they both
agree with me that it makes no sense,
and will not in any way adversely affect
the tenants, which after all is what the
Compact-sized hand pruners should do
the trick for indoor plant maintenance.
In addition, you should sanitise your
pruners between plants so you don’t
transfer diseases or pests. A disinfecting
wipe to clean the blades works great.
Prudent snipping not only makes your
plants look better and helps them stay
healthy but trimming off dead parts
creates space and energy for new
growth. Doing so will not only encourage
your plants to grow but will remind you,
while you’re doing it, of how true this
holds for you, too.
healthy homes standards are all about,
but as I said the law is the law.
There will of course be a lot of landlords
out there who are angry that the heating
tool was not accurate in the first place
and they have spent a large amount of
money replacing heat pumps or installing
larger than necessary units, and that is
understandable, however always one
to look on the bright side, I am at least
thankful that sense has prevailed and the
heating calculation for modern homes
now makes sense!
