St Faith’s restored and
open for service again

A CHURCH that sat empty
for 11 years finally opened its
doors to the community over the
weekend.
St Faith’s Church, New Brighton,
was bustling with generations
of people, who had special
connections to the church, in
celebration of its reopening.
The church was damaged in
the February 22, 2011 earthquake
and has not been safe to
enter since, leaving members to
gather and worship at South New
Brighton’s St Luke’s Anglican
Church and the blue hall behind
St Faith’s.
Anglican Parish of East
Christchurch vicar Katrina Hill
said it was exciting to see the
church finally reopen.
“They’ve done a beautiful job
architecturally, you can see some
of the bars that they’ve had to put
in for the earthquake strengthening
but they’ve done it really
well.”
The cost of strengthening and
refurbishing the church was $2.1
million, almost all of which has
come from insurance claims and
other properties in the parish
that donated their insurance
money to St Faith’s.
The church also fundraised
for additional facilities, such as a
kitchen, toilets and furniture.
It will also have an ancillary
building estimated to cost

$540,000 with plans complete
and an application for building
consent about to be lodged.
The current shortfall of $80-
90,000 will be achieved through
fundraising.
Hill said when it came to the
rebuild, the church was happy to
wait as they had facilities close by
they could use.

council spokesperson said

anticipated as the red zone

Planting day proves popular
in the face of climate change

A PLANTING day at the QE2
grounds has been described as a
great success with a turnout of
250 volunteers.
The event, organised by Eco
Action Nursery Trust, saw 3000
plants planted in just under two
hours with help from 20 schools,
locals and the New Brighton
Volunteer Fire Brigade.
“The general vibe of the place
was very positive, lots of friendly
chat and smiles as people went
about their planting with their
families, it was great,” said trust
chair David Newton.
The group planted totara
and kahikatea, which Newton
said would eventually
become towering canopy
trees, forming an essential
part of the New Zealand
bush ecosystem.
“I never expect anyone
to turn up, to be frank,
it’s always marvellous
that so many people do turn

up, we couldn’t do it without
them of course. I’m incredibly
grateful that people think its a
worthwhile way to spend

The planting day was
the first of four that will
see 12,000 student-grown
native plants and trees put
in the ground.
Newton said the planting
days gave students
a “physical outlet in the face of
global climate change”.
“It’s one of the few actions
they can take which is practical
and obvious, growing a forest
that will last for generations
in a permanent position in
Christchurch that they can point
at in their dotage to say, well, we
tried.”
The next planting day will
be at the QE2 grounds on June
19, with the following two at
Chimera Cres on August 21 and
September 18.
MEETING ROOM HIRE
GRANT APPROVED
The Waitai Coastal-Burwood
Community Board has approved
a grant of $550 to the Burwood
East Residents’ Association to
go towards the cost of meeting
room hire. The grant will allow
the association to continue to
hire the meeting room at the
Legacy Community Church for
the next 12 months to discuss
and respond to concerns in the

Popular hub renews Nursery Rd lease

THE Phillipstown Community
Hub will continue to operate
from its Nursery Rd location.
THe hub managed to renew
its lease with the Ministry of
Education in spite of earlier fears
the ministry may be forced to
sell the land.
A new lease agreement with
the ministry, which lasts until
the end of June next year,
provides much needed certainty
to the many organisations and
community groups that call the
hub home.

Centre Charitable Trust manager
Viviana Zanetti says it is an
amazing outcome.
“It’s a win-win situation,
because … we look after it,
it’s well maintained, it’s not
vandalised.
“But also, we do not pay any
rent, we can thrive, we can really
do amazing stuff.”
She says community
development and social cohesion
is not in the ministry kaupapa,
“so we are really grateful for this
place.”
“When government, local or
central, work with community,
we can make amazing things.”
THe Phillipstown Hub
operates from the old
Phillipstown Primary School
site, which closed after the
February 22, 2011, earthquake
and is still owned by the
ministry.

However, the ministry has to
declare land as surplus if it isn’t
being used for education.
THe hub has only managed
to keep the land so far because
the Te Waka Unua Technology
Centre was located onsite.
THe decision to relocate the
technology centre to Te Aratai
College (Linwood College) this
year left the future of the land
uncertain.
If the ministry was forced to
declare the land as surplus, it
may have been sold and the hub
would’ve been forced to move at
little notice.
However, plans have been
made to move a new school
into the old technology centre,
allowing the ministry to keep the
land and agree to a new lease for
the hub.
THe lease renewal is excellent
news for the community,
which has become attached to
the site, says volunteer Devon
Anderson.
“THe hub is very good for the
children, and the community.
It’s a real buzz, a buzz of activity
during the day.”
THe hub is home to eight
organisations that use its
facilities full-time, and over
50 other organisations and
community groups that
regularly use the site, ranging
from music groups and elderly
social groups to refugee
organisations and mental health
support groups.
With a community garden
and community pantry to help
feed those in need, over 800
people would walk through the
gates each week before the Covid
lockdowns began.
“It’s an amazing green space
in the neighbourhood with
amazing big trees and a really
safe space for children,” Zanetti
said.
“It’s a resource for the
Phillipstown area to be sure but
it’s also a resource for the whole
of Christchurch.”

Prestigious
award for new
Linwood Pool
TE POU Toetoe: Linwood
Pool has been a big winner at
the New Zealand Commercial
Project Awards.
Built for the city council by
construction company Apollo
Projects, the facility won the
gold award in the tourism and
leisure category.
“We’re thrilled the topquality
work that Apollo
Projects did in building this
new aquatic facility for the
Linwood community has been
recognised in this way,’’ said
city council acting head of
vertical capital delivery Brent
Smith.
“Apollo Projects completed
construction two months ahead
of schedule. The Linwood
community campaigned for a
long time for a pool and now
they have a wonderful facility
that both young and old can
enjoy. It is a real asset for the
local community.’’
The pool opened in October
last year.
The $22 million complex
features a multi-use 25m lane
pool, a deep-water manu/splash
pool, a family spa pool, a learnto-swim
pool, and a pool for
toddlers. Community meeting
rooms and a kitchen connect
to an outdoor gathering area
with picnic tables, tennis and
multi-use courts, cycle stands
and parking.

suffer significant damage in the
earthquakes, meaning it could
be saved.
“Where it sits on that nice little
hill, it’s quite solid ground there
so there was some damage but
it wasn’t badly damaged. It’s a
lovely place with a lovely story
with it, it’s something really special
in Brighton,” Hill said.
She said the church has plans
to install a window to let light
inside and is looking into
getting glass doors.

“It sits at such a great spot for
people to come on past and pop
in. Because it’s got the history of
the people of Brighton, it’s very
interesting when you go in there,
you know all the plaques that
are very much of local people,”
Hill said.
“A lot of people have
connections to St Faith’s,
whether they were married
there or baptised there or their
family were . . . There’s lots of
stories that have gone around
about the connections that are
happening with St Faith’s, which
has been great.”

Community gardens’ grateful for compost

TWENTY-TWO tonnes of
“gold” in the form of compost
has been donated to community
gardens following a shortage.
Forty-one community gardens
around the city will benefit from
1200 bags of compost to help
grow produce, donated by Tui
Garden Products.

“It’s literally like gold for the
gardens because we can’t grow
good crops without getting
good nutrition into the ground,”
Vogan said.
Vogan was approached by Tui
after the bags of expired compost,
and strawberry and vegetable
mix were discovered. They
couldn’t be sold so the company
asked if the community gardens
could use it.
Because the compost goes
straight into the ground and the
community gardens follow all
the health and safety procedures
Vogan said the compost would
be fine to use.
“It’s better than getting money,
it’s what we need to help grow
our food, so it’s amazing,” she
said.
She said there is a huge issue
with shortage of compost for
community gardens, especially
with the uncertain future of the
organics processing plant in
Bromley.
That has a big impact on community
gardens because we’re
really short of compost to put in
the ground and without being
able to feed the soil it’s really
hard to keep feeding people,”
Vogan said.
Vogan said it was a “juggling
act” getting the compost to
each community garden as the
association didn’t have access
to delivery trucks or a depot to
store the compost.
Luckily, Owens Transport
donated two delivery trucks
and drivers for a couple of
hours to deliver the 26 pallets of
compost to the Wai-ora Trust,
which offered its forklift and
space to store the compost for
other community gardens to

Each of the 41 community
gardens can take up to 22 bags
of compost, seeing garden members
filling up their cars to the
brim.
Vogan said in spring, a garden
event will be held and the
leftover compost mix will be
used for that.

Mix olive oil/garlic/Vegetta
together thoroughly,
then add the parmesan
cheese and mix again.
Add vegetables, put lid
on bowl and toss to coat,
put lid back on bowl and
re-toss.
Place on baking tray or
oven dish that has been
lined with non-stick tin
foil. Bake at 200 deg C for
40min.

Prepare in advance
Ingredients
Marinade:
4 tablespoons olive oil,
place in largest bowl with:
2 tablespoons balsamic
vinegar
2 teaspoons liquid honey
1 heaped tablespoon dried
rosemary
Crushed peppercorns
Vegetables:
Peel and chop up any
suitable, roastable
vegetable into bite-size
chunks (or can leave in
strips or any other size, if
desired).
Place in marinade, cover
bowl and leave for at least
an hour, the longer the
better. Best results are if
made the day before.
When ready to cook,
transfer to roasting dish
or baking tray which can
be lined with tin foil or
baking paper, and roast at
200deg C for 40min.
Vegetables should
be tender and slightly
blackened around the
edges. Can cook for an
hour at 180 deg C if
sharing oven with other
food(s).
Self-crusting quiche
Serves 4-6
Ingredients
3 eggs, place in mixing
bowl and lightly beat, then
add:
100gm butter (melted)
1½ cups blue milk
1 cup grated cheese
1 cup self-raising flour
(sifted)
1 teaspoon green herb
stock (optional)
Pepper or peppercorns
(optional)
Extras, whatever you like
in the way of vegetables,
ham, bacon etc
Topping
Tomato, sliced
Pumpkin seeds
Parmesan cheese
Directions
Mix eggs/butter/milk/
cheese/flour together thoroughly,
but don’t overmix.
Add optional ingredients
and stir through.
Pour into large, deep
oven-proof dish that has

of non-stick tin foil.

at 180 deg C for 60min.

Makes 4-5
Ingredients
2 cups carrots, grated,
place in mixing bowl with:
½ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon coriander
2 eggs
4 cloves garlic, crushed
3 spring onions, sliced
½ cup breadcrumbs
Peppercorns
Olive oil (for frying)
Directions
Mix well, and fry in olive
oil until browned on both
sides.
Roast vegetable and
pesto pizza
Serves 2
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil,
place in large bowl with:
½ pumpkin, peeled, deseeded
and cut into pieces
1 kumara, peeled and cut
into chunks
2 carrots, peeled & sliced
½ cauliflower, cut into
florets
1 small red onion, sliced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
2 pizza bases
80gm pesto
1 cup grated cheese
100 grams feta
½ cup chopped spinach
2 tablespoons sweet chilli
sauce
Bacon or ham optional
Directions
Preheat oven to 180 deg
C. Line baking tray with
non-stick tin foil.
Add cumin and coriander
to olive oil, pumpkin,
kumara and carrots and
toss. Tip onto baking tray
and bake in oven for 20min,
then add cauliflower and
red onion, toss, and continue
cooking for a further
15min.
Remove from oven, leaving
the oven turned on, but
keep hot. Place pizza bases
on baking tray and spread
evenly with the pesto.
Sprinkle with the cheese
(all of it), then add the
vegetables.
Crumble over the feta
and place back in the oven
for 10min.
Top with spinach and
sweet chilli sauce.

Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
