Largest-ever native planting
project gets the go-ahead
MORE THAN 100,000 native
trees will be planted in the southwest
as part of a network of
new wetland areas in the upper
catchment of the Ōpāwaho/
Heathcote River.
It will be the largest native
planting project ever undertaken
by the city council.
The Eastman Wetland landscape
plan was approved by the
Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board, with
planting to take place over the
next three years.
“This project will
return a vast area of
native plants to the city,
reduce the amount of
sediment going into
waterways and protect
natural springs,” city
council head of three
waters Helen Beaumont
said.
“The wetlands act as
a storage basin in heavy rainfall,
reducing downstream flooding
and improving waterway health.
They’ll also provide a wonderful
area for people to connect
with nature and will create new
habitat for native birds, fish and
insects.”
City council contractors have
been developing the 100-hectare
facility on former farmland
between Cashmere and Sutherlands
Rd and towards Hoon Hay
Valley.
The large ponds will capture
and store excess stormwater and

act as a natural filter before the
water flows into the Cashmere
Stream and on to the river.
Both of these waterways have
freshwater crayfish, freshwater
mussels, whitebait and other
native fish.
“Now we have the landscape
plan approval we can start to
look at the planting programme.
The council’s Harewood Nursery
has been working with suppliers
for the past two years as a
programme of this scale requires
a lot of preparation,” Beaumont
said.
The plan provides for
30,000 to 35,000 tall trees
that will grow up to 12m
high, 70,000 to 75,000 small
trees and shrubs growing
up to 5m high, and between
600,000 and 650,000 plants.
Large areas of rongoā
garden will be developed
to provide a sustainable
place to collect plants for use
in traditional Māori medicine.
Walking and cycling tracks are
included as part of the
landscape plan, along with
a car park.
Provision has also been made
for a cycling pump track to be
included. City council staff will
be working with Cashmere
High School students to help
them design and build the track.
“We hope this project will
positively benefit people of all
ages and from right across the
city,” said Beaumont.

THE DEPARTMENT of
Corrections has until February 9
to appeal after permission to build
a contentious rehabilitation centre
for violent offenders in St Albans
was declined.
However, it is remaining tightlipped
on whether or not it is likely
to do so.
Last week the Bristol Street
Resource Consent Hearing panel
declined to grant resource consent
for the Bristol St facility, following
a hearing in November.
The proposal would have seen
up to 12 men serving sentences
of home detention at 14 Bristol St
while participating in a violenceprevention
programme. Men
with significant untreated mental
health issues would not be eligible
to participate in the programme.
In their decision, city council
appointed commissioners Anthony
Hughes-Johnson QC and Ken
Lawn said they were not satisfied
the site was appropriate for such a
facility.
Corrections acting regional
commissioner Chris O’Brien-
Smith did not answer Nor’West
New’s question on whether an
appeal would be made, but said
corrections would spend the
next few weeks reflecting on the
commissioners’ findings.

Community gardens grow in popularity

Saving money was a significant
reason why people wanted to
learn how to grow vegetables at
Richmond Community Garden,
chairperson Hayley Guglietta
said.
“I think it’s essential for society
to learn how to grow from a
seed.”
New Brighton Community
Garden manager Catherine
O’Neill said visitor and volunteer
numbers have “skyrocketed”
since the beginning of Covid
lockdowns.
The garden has about 17 volunteers
and 13 visitors each day
it is open. Funding and administration
manager Lin Klenner
said this was “easily double” the
number of people from two years
ago.
Klenner attributed this increased
interest in gardening and
vegetable growing to people having
been stuck at home during
lockdowns from 2020.
“The problem is a lot of people
didn’t have the skills, so when
lockdown was over people came
to community gardens to learn
more.”
O’Neill said being able to
grow your own vegetables was
“empowering”, as people became
more self-sufficient and less reliant
on outside sources for fresh
produce.

after they have worked for two
hours.
Regular volunteer Tony has
helped at the garden for three
years. He said he appreciates the
vegetables he gets to take home,
and the skills he has learned in
growing different plants.

around and enjoys “seeing the
four seasons” being reflected in
the garden.

skills.
“There is a satisfaction and
pleasure in creating something
yourself and sharing the crops
with people,” she said.

benefits of gardening were well
known.
“They’ve done studies on
wellbeing and one big thing is
getting your hands in the soil,
to get good feelings into your
brain.”
A literature review by UK
organisations Garden Organic
and Sustain said gardening
and community food growing
improved mental and physical
health. It claimed gardening can
reduce stress and depression, and
improve people’s health because
they are eating more fruit and
vegetables.
The social connection aspect
of community gardens can also
boost mental health. Tony said
his mood always improved after
spending time at the garden.
High food prices are also
driving people to grow their own
vegetables.
Fruit and vegetable prices at
supermarkets have jumped 17 per
cent over the last year, according
to Stats NZ. The biggest increases
were the cost of tomatoes, broccoli
and iceberg lettuces.
Klenner said rising prices
made it more attractive for
volunteers to come to the
community garden, to be able to
take home some vegetables and
learn growing skills they can use
in their own gardens.

Saving the planet with skateboards

A 15-YEAR-OLD plans
to educate people on the
importance of recycling through
his skateboard business.
Neith Absalom has found a
way to reuse plastic bottle tops
by melting them down to make
skateboard decks.
Neith is a student at special
character school Ao Tawhiti in
the central city and got the idea
to make skateboards during a
self-directed learning session.
Neith decided he wanted to
take up rowing, but needed
funds to cover the cost of the
sport, inspiring him to start a
business that worked towards
eco-friendliness at the same
time.
After some researching, Neith
learned that number two plastic
(high-density polyethylene),
made out of plastic bottle tops
often isn’t recycled.
“It’s really easy to melt safely. I
had a thing with skateboards because
I really love skateboarding
so it turned into art pieces and
skateboards,” Neith said.
“The current crisis that we’re
in now is people kind of saying
it’s going to be alright and really
it’s not, and my whole thing is to
open people’s eyes up to the stuff
that we’re not recycling which is
quite easily recycled.”
Neith uses just over 1000 bottle
tops to make a board, shredding
the plastic before melting it
down at 120-150 deg C in a metal
frame using a “bake oven.”
Neith made his first board
last year with an old heat plate
he found on Trade Me, using a
wooden frame, but this burnt so
he switched to a metal frame that
his friend Monty shaped for him
in their school’s tech room.

Now, he uses what he calls a
bake oven, but said it’s really just
an old barbecue.
It takes about one and a half to
two hours to fully melt the bottle
tops down, applying pressure
with a non-stick sheet.
Neith then takes the board to
the school’s tech room to smooth
out the edges and put holes in
it where the wheels would be

A problem Neith ran into during
the process was the lack of
grip on the board, which didn’t
matter if the board was put on
display as art, like the ones he
has in his school’s cafe and New
Brighton’s Pier People art gallery.
However, if they were being
used practically, they needed to
have more grip on the surface,
so his mother Natalie suggested
getting old coffee sacks that cafes
throw away and pressing them
into the board.
This would not only create a
cool pattern but gives the surface
of the board a much better grip,
Neith said.
He said his mother has often
chipped in to help with his
business and is very supportive
of him as well as his learning
adviser (teacher) Ian Hayes.
“He’s real good to me and helping
me get on the right track and
believes that I can do it and nothing’s
going to get in my way.”
Now that Neith has figured out
the right process to making the
boards, he plans to start selling
them and working on getting his
brand out there.
He sells the boards for $120

makes will go straight back into
the business for now before he
can start making a profit.
When asked if he was going to
take up rowing soon he said he
wasn’t sure anymore.
“I’ve kind of made this really
good eco business that I kind of
maybe want to carry on forever,”
he laughed.
When people ask Neith if the
boards are strong enough he says
they seem to be stronger than the
wooden ones you get from places
like The Warehouse.
“As long as you know how to
put a skateboard together then
you’re sweet,” he said.

the city and a retirement village
in Amberley, as well as the
Halswell Community Hub.
He’s even received a load of
bottle tops from someone in
Waikato who had come across
his Facebook page, which he said
was pretty cool.
When he leaves school, Neith
wants to be a chiropractor or
physiotherapist, as he likes
helping people but doesn’t like
blood.
He has future plans to make
longboard decks and include
wheels on them as a step up from
the smaller boards he’s making
without wheels.
He said he doesn’t mind what
people do with the skateboards,
whether they use them practically
or hang them up on display.
“That’s cool with me as long
as it’s loved, as long as it’s not
thrown back into the rubbish I’m
happy,” he said.

Metal dog tags to replace
annual plastic ones
METAL TAGS to last your
dog’s lifetime will be rolled
out as part of this year’s dog
registration renewal period.
The city council’s new
rectangular dog tags will
have a unique identification
number on them and will
replace the plastic, coloured
discs, which were thrown out
and replaced every year.
“There are more than 40,000
dogs registered in Christchurch
so the new metal tags are
the sustainable, future-proofed
option with at least 40,000
plastic tags not going into the
red bin every year,” animal
services manager Lionel
Bridger said.
“At the moment people
have to pay their registration
and then wait for their new
tags to arrive in the mail
so having lifelong tags will
speed up the registration
process.”
The new system will mean
the only thing dog owners
need to do will be to pay their
registration each year.
The new dog tags will also
have a QR code on them,
generated by a company
called Tag King. For $20,
owners can use the QR code
to store their contact information.
Then if their dog
ONE-OFF: The new metal tags will last a lifetime,
replacing the plastic discs that were updated
every year.

“We want to stress, this
is an optional service and
you have to opt into it, and
is completely separate from
your registration fees with
us,” Bridger said.
Reminder letters for this
year’s dog registration are

“So it’s a timely reminder
that the period to pay your
annual dog registration fees
is coming up,” he said.
If you have responsible
dog owner status, you
have until June 30 to pay
at the discounted rate. If
you’re paying the standard
registration fee you have until
July 31.
You can pay online, over the
phone using a credit card by
calling 941 8999, or in person
at one of the service centres.

investigation and resolution,
care and welfare of
impounded dogs, and free
dog microchipping.

Energy
project to
help 200
households
A PROJECT to help low and fixed
income households reduce their
energy bills will benefit from a
$49,763 sustainability fund grant.
The fund was set up by the city
council to assist with community
action on climate change.
A proposal from Christchurch
business Ecobulb will see the
Home Energy Project pilot rolled
out to help 200 low and fixed
income households.
The company will install LED
bulbs and water-efficient shower
heads, provide energy saving
tips and support householders to
select the best energy provider.
The scheme aims to save almost
700 tonnes of greenhouse gas
emissions over 10 years through
energy savings.
The pilot project will also be
used to gather information to
support a funding application
to the $17m energy hardship
programme offered by the Ministry
of Business, Innovation and
Employment.
“If Ecobulb is able to expand
the programme it will potentially
benefit about 20,000 Christchurch
households,” said sustainability
and community resilience
committee chair, councillor
Sara Templeton.

Use tangy tomatoes to make a meal
There are many

varieties, each
offering a unique
taste. Try using
tomatoes to create a
meal.

Serve lightly chilled as a
light meal with crusty bread or
as an accompaniment to cold
meats.
Pasta with marinated
tomatoes
Balsamic roasted
tomatoes
Serves 4-8
Ingredients
10-12 medium tomatoes, plum
preferably
4 each: cloves garlic, basil
leaves, thinly sliced,
few sprigs thyme
2 spring onions
1 red chilli
Flaky sea salt and freshly
ground black pepper to taste
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Directions
Set the oven to 170 deg C.
Place tomatoes in a casserole
dish so they fit snuggly.
Sprinkle with garlic, basil and
thyme.
Halve spring onions
lengthwise and cut into 4cm long
lengths.
Halve chilli lengthwise and
seed.
Weave spring onions and chilli
between the tomatoes.
Season well.
Combine vinegar and brown
sugar. Pour over tomatoes.
Drizzle with olive oil.
Bake for about 45min,
until tomatoes are soft but still
retain their shape.
Serve with crusty bread as a
starter, on pasta or as an
accompaniment.
Classic tomato salad with
a twist
Serves 4-5
Ingredients
4 tbsp chopped parsley
Finely grated rind 1 large lemon
2 cloves garlic, crushed
Salad:
200g fresh mozzarella or
bocconcini
3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 tbsp finely sliced basil leaves
2 cloves garlic, crushed
Freshly ground black pepper to
taste
500g medium-size ripe
tomatoes
Freshly ground salt to taste
Directions

tomatoes.
Combine ingredients and place
aside. Slice mozzarella into a
bowl. Sprinkle with olive oil, basil,
garlic and black pepper. Stand
for at least 30min.
In a flat serving dish slice the

Coarsely chop remaining
marinated tomatoes, reserving
marinade.
Combine finely and coarsely
chopped tomatoes and reserved
marinade with hot cooked pasta,
and toss to coat.
Stir in chopped fresh basil and
the mozzarella.

proclamations of greatness being
made across the city.
It’s done in an attempt to win the
hard-earnt trust – and, therefore, the
real estate needs – of potential clients
and it happens with every significant
brand in the industry, not just the one
featuring above our own doorway. It’s
confusing, I know, often off-putting
and, what’s more, I contribute to it!
So, I’m offering my apologies whilst
providing some rationale.

Notice for consultation on a proposed Enrolment Scheme
amendment for Cotswold School
The Ministry of Education has identified that Cotswold School requires an
amendment to their enrolment scheme. This is to remove a small section from the
home zone area to clarify local education pathways and to clarify the home zone
boundary so that the home zone map and written description more accurately
represent which addresses are in-zone.
After engagement with the Board, we have developed a proposed enrolment scheme
amendment for Cotswold School under the Education and Training Act 2020.
As part of this process, we are consulting with the school’s community and with
people living in the area for which the school is a reasonably convenient school.
Under this scheme, students will be able to enrol if they live within the proposed
home zone. The enrolment of out-of-zone students is governed by the provisions of
the Education and Training Act 2020.
