A trip to
the past
Messenger photos by Dedra Cordle
History enthusiasts and the historically
curious came out to Century Village in
Fryer Park on June 4 to experience a trip
to the past during the annual Heritage
Celebration. Presented by the city of
Grove City and the Southwest Franklin
County Historical Society, the event
allows those living in modern times to
get a glimpse of the lives of those who
inhabited these lands during the mid-tolate
18th and 19th centuries. Here, (top
right) historical reenactor James
Sturckler demonstrates that while the
years may have passed, people have
and always will find pleasure in the simple
things like catching a cool breeze
underneath the trees on a warm day.
When not being lulled by the pleasantness
of the atmospheric conditions,
Sturckler often engaged with attendees
about the American Revolutionary War
in which his character was a soldier of
the King’s 8th Regiment of Foot. The resident
of Dayton – who has been a living
history reenactor for more than two
decades – hand-sewed this uniform.
Grove City Council will consider legislation
to relax rules associated with the designated
Southwest Public Libraries kicked off its popular annual
Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) on June 4, launching
a summer of reading fun and live performers and programs.
The first fully live SRC since 2019, the challenge
will run June 4 through July 31 and is offered for all ages,
babies through adults. All performers, programs, and
activities are free and open to the public.
Participants will be able to track their reading, attend
library programs, and complete activities to earn
prizes and raffle entries. Registration is open online
at the library’s website, in-person at the library, or
through the READsquared app. This year’s theme
is Oceans of Possibilities.
Summer Reading Challenge is a crowd-favorite
tradition intended to foster learning during the
summer months and help resist “summer slide,” the
tendency for children to lose significant learning
gains over the summer if they do not read or engage
in other enrichment activities while school is out of
session.
The fun is not just for kids though.
“We love our adult patrons,” said Denise
Southworth, Westland reference and adult services
librarian. “Adults can get in on the SRC fun too
with special programs and a challenge tailored just
for them.”
Adult participants can submit book reviews and
complete special activities to earn gift-card raffle
entries or enjoy one of many engaging adult programs,
including book discussions, DIY programs,
and weekly Take and Make Kits.
This year marks the first fully live SRC since
2019, and live SRC performers - one of the biggest
draws to the program - are making a much-anticipated
return after two years of virtual performances
due to the pandemic.
“Staff are just as excited as patrons to have our
first full in-person Summer Reading program since
the pandemic,” said Kacy Cox, assistant director of
the Grove City Library.
“Families look to the library each summer for
opportunities that are both entertaining and educational
the Westland Area Library. “Summer performances are
one of the biggest draws to SRC and are usually very wellattended.”
Some of the most popular animal programs routinely
draw hundreds of attendees.
This year, the library will host free performers at each
location, with a morning performance at Grove City
Library at 10:30 a.m. and a repeated afternoon performance
at Westland Area Library at 1:30 p.m.
Broadway, and the Christmas Celebration. The
amended legislation proposes to remove Homecoming,
Boo Off Broadway, and the Christmas Celebration
from the excluded events list.
According to Law Director Stephen Smith, when
the city first established the DORA, city leaders were
not sure how it would work with current city events.
“The DORA was new to us, but we are now comfortable
that it can co-exist with events,” said Smith.
The outdoor refreshment area was adopted by city
council in 2019. It includes areas in the Town Center
north of Cleveland Avenue, east of Arbutus Avenue,
south of Civic Place, and west behind City Hall. Last
year, council voted to expand the boundaries to the
city-owned lot next to the old library site on Park
Street and to the southeast corner of Civic Place and
Broadway.
The DORA is essentially a waiver of Grove City’s
open container law for a designated area. It allows
patrons (ages 21 and older) to buy an alcoholic beverage,
from an established permit holder, and take that
drink outside in the marked areas. The beverages are
poured into an identifiable plastic cup. Participants
can sit outside and drink or they browse the designated
area.
If council approves the amendment, citizens would
not be prohibited from partaking in the DORA during
the Homecoming Celebration, Boo Off Broadway, and
the Christmas Celebration.
“I have not seen any significant issues related to the
DORA,” said Smith. “It is working well.”
Andy Furr, executive director of the Heart of Grove
City, who proposed the creation of the DORA several
years ago, said businesses have seen a boost since its
implementation. He said Town Center establishments
that sold food and alcohol have reported an uptick in
business but also said retail shop owners
have seen an increase in foot traffic.
According to Furr, Grove City is the only
community in central Ohio to offer its
DORA six days a week, year-round.
Council will hold its second reading and
public hearing on the proposed legislation
on June 20. If passed, the amended ordinance
would go into effect in 30 days after
it is approved.
Police lieutenant proud to be
part of GCHS baseball team
The Grove City High School Baseball
team played for a state championship
on June 10 in Akron. With
them in the dugout was Justin Gallo,
who pulls double duty as a coach and
is currently an acting lieutenant with
the Grove City Division of Police.
While serving as a school resource officer
with GCHS in 2015, Gallo was
invited to be a part of the coaching
staff.
“He’s awesome, he brings the energy
every day that he’s here,” said
Senior First Baseman Ty Clifton.
“He’s made extremely close connections
with some of our guys,” said
Junior Catcher Grady Speegle. “He
texts us before the games if he can’t
make it, tells us it’s for the city, and
it really is. He really enforces that
idea.”
Pitching Coach Mark Mayers
praised the work that Gallo brings to
the team.
“He loves to contribute to our baseball
program,” Mayers said. “What he
does in terms of the encouragement to
the kids, you see someone who is here
every day and makes a commitment
to be here as much as he can. He has
his own family, but this is his second
family, and the kids respond to him
really well.”
“I want to be at everything baseball
related, I’m just not able to,”
Gallo said. “I’m not on a teacher
schedule. I have to burn my vacation
time when we go to do things.”
But Gallo is more than happy to
spend those vacation days.
“It is worth every second of it,”
Gallo said. “We went through some
pretty rough times in 2020, 2021,
with things going around in the country.
That is my outlet. Those guys lift
me up, they help me get through
everything. They are there for me. I
don’t think most people realize a
bunch of teenage guys would have
that impact, but getting out there and
helping them, helping them with life,
and break down those barriers of the
police officer and young men is a
tremendous benefit.”
Opinion Page
Being eco-friendly requires a true commitment
When used correctly, eco-friendly is a
powerful modern-day term fueling a great
rallying message for us all on how we need
to infuse mega doses of Vitamin ‘N’ into our
system to get Mother Nature back into our
lives, to show respect, save and restore the
finite natural resources we were given and
charged to be stewards over.
Being eco-friendly is simply something:
Having a beneficial effect on the environment
or at least not causing environmental
damage. But over time, I fear the conceptual
intent of that term has wandered off and
lost much of its initial intended thrust. It’s
quickly evolving into something far different
for some, too easily proudly thrown
about as loosely and undeservedly as a
politician stoutly taking credit for something
unearned or unwarranted.
It makes people feel good to say the term
eco-friendly, it’s like a comfort food. It
becomes a status symbol, great for publicity
and public relations, “We’re eco-friendly”.
But I fear it’s meaning has digressed
into something different. It’s too-often
interchanged and become synonymous
with pretty, pristine or green. If you have a
beautiful lawn and lots of pretty flowers,
bushes and trees, “we’re eco-friendly, look
at how beautiful our yard is.” The reality
may be at the opposite end of the ecofriendly
spectrum.
Now that’s not to say you can’t have
varying combinations of them all together
and that’s a very reasonable and desirable
goal when you’re wanting to be eco-friendly.
But in too many cases, the eco-friendly
portion ends up taking the backseat to the
others, or it gets bumped, deprioritized and
maybe even totally lost in the mix. Yet, the
eco-friendly boasting continues to be incorrectly
and brazenly bantered about. It’s
time to step back, assess the original
intent, and walk the talk.
We’re now going to take a dog walk
together. I’ll point out some things along
the way and you decide if they meet ecofriendly
standards and criteria. Not to
worry. I’ll bring an eco-friendly waste bag,
My daughter likes to save money.
The other day in the middle of playing
outside, she rushed in the front door,
passed me like a cheetah, and ran straight
into her room. A few seconds later, she was
on her way back outside. Apparently, she
found a penny and needed to add it to her
piggy bank.
While she loves saving, she also loves
spending. I’ve watched her at yard sales
talk down the price of something she sees.
There’s nothing more funny than watching
the face of someone trying to figure out
whether a 6-year-old is serious in offering
$1 on a $5 item.
Other times, she used her birthday
just in case the calling comes, and I’ll handle
any cleanup to ensure we show respect
for the environment and path users, as I
wish a few others would. I think you’ll be
surprised at the many non-eco-friendly situations
we pass.
As we depart and turn onto the walking
path, we see trees lining the city road for
some distance. They’re all the same, some
variety of hybrid ornamental fruit tree,
planted years ago. They have pretty blossoms
for a few short weeks each year in the
spring. They also have berries for most of
the year, either on the tree or fallen to the
ground. The birds just ignore them, except
for the hardy Canadian robins who remain
north and sometimes become desperate,
even for this low quality food source, if the
winter is long and snow and ice locks in the
ground and other food sources. The long
line of trees is totally non-eco-friendly. I
still see too many trees being planted that
aren’t eco-friendly.
We’re now down to the athletic field
complex. Time to short-leash the dog to
keep him out of harm’s way. Every one of
those ornamental fruit trees, light and telephone
poles, street signs, the fire hydrant,
basically here, there and everywhere in
front of the fields have has been sprayed
with chemicals over roughly a six-foot
radius, leaving brown dying ground cover,
soon to become mostly dirt and visible eroded
away roots surrounding the trees. It’s so
ugly you wonder what the purpose is versus
just leaving as is. Then you remember,
“got to look pretty.” Right, except it
remains downright ugly for weeks after
spraying, until the ground cover starts
creeping back in a few short weeks.
We walk past the entrance to the fields.
We used to go down the path adjacent to
the fields but the fence area along there
was also sprayed in what must have looked
like a scene akin to kids having a water
fight in a pool. The ugly dead ground cover
and dirt extends over to the path in some
spots. We’re told that it’s safe after the first
hour. No thanks. My confidence with reassuring
oversight has waned over the years
after some of the lawsuits and belated
chemical reclassifications. And tell that to
the beautiful wildflowers that vibrantly
grew there a few days earlier. What ever
happened to all the ecosystem essential
caterpillars we used to see over there? “Got
to look pretty and green.” It’s not.
We walk down to the housing street and
turn in. As we do, a breeze sends a pungent
odor of lawn chemicals wafting off our nostrils.
It’s barely dawn, and automatic sprinklers
are running at many homes. The
sidewalks and road are getting a good
watering, some spray adjustment is desperately
needed. Forget about the heavy
rains the night before. Forget about the
severe drought our western states are suffering
through. We have the water (now),
so use it.
You see some beautiful lawns with gorgeous
non-native flowers, bushes and trees.
You wonder if a stray strand of clover spotting,
with a honeybee feasting on it in the
yard, would draw panic and a canister of
chemical spray or a 911 call. It’s a scene all
too familiar now across the country as longstanding
thriving ecosystems get displaced
almost overnight by our sprawl and habitat
fracturing, sending more shockwaves and
stress onto the already struggling, intricately
woven cobwebs of our ecosystems.
From an eco-friendly perspective, we end
up with biological wasteland with the vastness
of lawns across this country comprising
a huge piece of that. It’s a perfect example
of needing more eco-friendly priority in
the mix along with the pretty and green.
Native plants are so desperately needed to
keep and restore the faltering delicately
balanced ecosystems that have been haphazardly
broken apart. Plastic flowers are
not a favorite of a thriving ecosystem.
We come out of the housing area and
merge back onto the fence path. We’re at
the nice little wetland ecosystem area
that’s somehow managed to survive several
‘cut-back’ attempts after an official insisted,
“it needs to look pristine.” There’s a
The value of the dollar learned at an early age
money and gift cards to buy a stuffed animal
bird that pecked itself through a plastic
egg shell and now repeats everything
she says. You probably remember the infamous
Hatchimal.
I am proud of my daughter for saving
her money for something she has wanted
for months, but I can’t help but think about
how she earned that last bit of money that
put her over the savings hump.
You’ve seen it - people who donate plasma
or participate in every medical study
they can think of to earn extra cash.
Obviously my daughter didn’t do this.
She’s too young.
But she did see another opportunity to
get that Hatchimal a little sooner. Her
mind started formulating a plan, I believe,
the minute she noticed her first loose tooth.
Now as a young child, money is money.
She gets just as excited about finding a
quarter as she does about getting a dollar
or $5. When a loose tooth signaled that the
Tooth Fairy was about to visit, it instantly
triggered her thought process that she was
about to come into some serious dough.
That’s when the plan was hatched to get
her Hatchimal.
Each day for a week, I noticed she meticulously
wiggled her loose tooth. As the
tooth continued to wiggle more with ease,
she disappeared into her room one night
change from the day
before. More cutting
everything to the
ground, taking it six
feet in from the
fence. Right at the
height of the breeding
season. You
notice those redwing
blackbirds that were nesting there
have fled. The vibrant growing thistle
areas the goldfinches thrived on have long
been eliminated in prior pristine cleansing
actions. The ecosystem essential milkweeds
and goldenrods along the fence area
are also gone.
At this point I pause, hopefully having
opened a few more eyes to the broad topic
of eco-friendly. There’s so much more, but
space will not allow me to adequately
address. I may have accentuated the negative,
just to highlight the work that
remains ahead, but I should stress there
are many great things going on in our community
at many levels of sincerity and dedication.
I’m encouraged further efforts will
escalate the awareness and buy-in.
By way of conclusion, I thought I’d leave
you with a paragraph from a book I read
(“Nature’s Best Hope”). It perfectly fits
where we’re at:
“Our environmental boat has sprung a
leak. Many of us are trying to repair the
leak; others are bailing to keep us afloat
until the leak is plugged. What is baffling
is that far too many of us are dumping new
buckets of water into our boat, as if sinking
will not be a problem for them. At this
point, each of us must decide what role we
will play in the future. Will you be a bailer
or a dumper?”
Q: What are floaters and what causes them?
A: Floaters are small dark shapes that move across your vision. They can appear
as dots, threads, squiggly lines, or even like cobwebs. Most floaters are caused
by normal changes in the eye. As you age, small strands of vitreous (gel-like fluid
that fills your eye) can clump together and cast a shadow on your retina (the
light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). Those shadows appear as floaters
that drift across your vision. You may notice floaters more when you look at a
bright background, like a computer screen or a blue sky.
Q: How often should someone with new
floaters get an eye exam?
A: Someone experiencing new floaters, a large increase in the number of floaters,
or flashing lights should see an eye care professional immediately. Sometimes
floaters have a more serious cause, including: infection, injury, inflammation,
bleeding, retinal tear or retinal detachment.
Someone with a few stable floaters should see an eye care professional at least
once a year for a comprehensive dilated eye exam.
Grove City Kids Association is offering lacrosse.
GCKA is going for growth
By Christine Bryant
Staff Writer
Now recognized as one of the fastest
growing sports in America, lacrosse is
expanding in Grove City in an effort to get
more youth involved.
Currently in the first year of offering
lacrosse, the Grove City Kids Association is
working to increase awareness about the
sport that combines basketball, soccer and
hockey.
Jason Wright, the lacrosse commissioner
and board member for the GCKA, says
the Grove City Lacrosse Club approached
the organization with an opportunity to
help grow lacrosse in youth programs.
“The club has been in existence for
almost seven years,” Wright said.
“Together, we felt that with GCKA’s existing
database of kids within this age group,
we were uniquely positioned to help grow
the sport. After all, we already work with
kids in this age group for softball, soccer,
football and cheerleading.”
The GCKA features two divisions of
play for youth in the area. The first, the
Junior division, is made up of kids in 3rd
and 4th grades. The Senior division is
made up of youth in grades 5 and 6.
“This year we have one team in each
division where the kids play coed,” Wright
said. “In the future we would love to have
both a boys and a girls team in each division.”
As a parent of a child who recently
picked up lacrosse, Wright says he has
seen firsthand how the sport helps develop
kids.
“They not only get exercise, which I
think all kids need, but they also learn
about leadership and teamwork,” he said.
“This is a sport that is very difficult for one
person to dominate.”
The rules in the youth game center on
teaching the fundamentals of the game, as
well as require the kids to pass the ball
once over midfield in order to become “hot”
or be able to take a shot.
“This forces the kids to communicate
and work to get open so that they can make
that pass before heading to the goal,”
Wright said. “The kids also have to communicate
on defense, talking about when
someone is hot and when someone is cutting
so the other defenders know to look
out for them.”
The sport also brings together all of the
things he says his son loves in sports.
“It brought the fast-paced thinking that
is required when playing defense in basketball
and combined that with a little hitting
like football,” Wright said. “Add in some
insane speed with kids running up and
down the field with precision passing like
you were going to throw a kid out in baseball,
and you have a sport that just about
anyone can pick up in just a few minutes
and find some aspect of the game that they
just love.”
Players at this level practice three to
four times a week for about 60 to 90 minutes,
Wright said. Games are held on
Sunday and are in a round-robin format.
“Teams are made up of participants in
the Central Ohio Youth Lacrosse League,
which features teams from Gahanna,
Hilliard, New Albany, Granville, Jonathan
Alder and Bexley, amongst others,” Wright
said.
Not only is the game fast-paced for the
players, it’s exciting to watch for spectators,
he says.
“Unlike some sports that move at a
slower pace, something is always going on
in lacrosse,” Wright said. “If you look away
for a minute, you might just miss something.”
While playing lacrosse can be costly
because of the equipment required to play
the sport, Wright says they are looking at
ways to reduce the costs for families.
“Grove City Lacrosse was able to come
in and offer kids loaner elbow pads, gloves,
sticks and rental helmets to keep the cost
down for the youth program,” Wright said.
As the program grows, Wright says the
GCKA plans to look into grants from USA
Lacrosse and other means of funding the
lacrosse program such as donations or
sponsorships.
SWACO’s new director brings experience in leadership
The SWACO board unanimously voted
to hire Joe Lombardi as the new executive
director, a role left vacant following the
retirement of Ty Marsh in March 2022.
Lombardi’s first day with the agency was
June 6.
Lombardi’s appointment follows a rigorous
search led by an ad hoc committee of
the board, and facilitated by Ohio-based
Strategic HR and Direct Effect Solutions,
in which more than 90 candidates
expressed interest in the position.
A graduate of Capital University,
Lombardi has more than 30 years of governmental
experience with an emphasis in
finance, administration, policy development
and procurement.
SWACO board chair Susan Tilgner
called Lombardi an ideal leader for the
position.
Teen Ambassador Board
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost
announced that his office is now accepting
applications for its Teen Ambassador
Board.
The Attorney General’s Teen
Ambassador Board consists of upper-level
high school students from public, private,
“Joe’s extensive background in public
finance, executive leadership, familiarity
with SWACO and close connections to the
central Ohio community will serve the
agency well as we work with local communities,
schools and businesses to advance
our strategic direction in order to achieve a
75 percent diversion goal in central Ohio,”
said Tilgner.
Lombardi will depart his employment as
director of the department of finance and
management with the city of Columbus to
join SWACO. He previously served on the
SWACO board of trustees from 2016-2021
where he helped shape and support the
securing of a new permit-to-install for the
Franklin County Sanitary Landfill, the
solar energy project, as well as establish a
carbon emissions management plan, which
is aligned with the international Paris
news and notes
charter and online schools in Ohio as well
as students who are home-schooled. The
mission of the program is to provide Ohio’s
future leaders with an inside look at Ohio
law and government.
“I have had the pleasure of getting to
know some great future leaders through
the Teen Ambassador Board,” Yost said.
“We hope this opportunity helps to attract
Accord. As a board member, Lombardi also
supported new programs aimed at helping
Franklin County achieve record high recycling
rates annually.
“Central Ohio residents, families and
businesses are passionate about the way
we manage our waste and care for the environment,
so I’m eager to roll up my sleeves
and share new ideas and opportunities to
further leverage the waste stream for our
region’s benefit,” Lombardi said. “I appreciate
the confidence the board has placed in
me to lead the agency, and I’m committed
to being a champion for the good work and
strategic direction already underway by
the team at SWACO.”
Lombardi is an active community volunteer,
coaching high school and youth football
and participating in a number of professional
associations, organizations and
young people into pursuing careers focused
on protecting and serving Ohioans.”
Board members advise the office on
issues relating to teens and collaborate
with their peers to develop solutions to
those issues. They serve a one-year term,
during which they participate in activities
throughout the state.
Ohio high school students who will be
Joe Lombardi
boards. He and his family live in
Columbus.
juniors or seniors during the 2022-23 academic
year are eligible to apply for the Teen
Ambassador Board.
Applications are due July 1.
The application can be found on the
Ohio Attorney General’s website, ohioattorneygeneral.gov.

In Entertainment
“Top Gun: Maverick” soars with nostalgia
When Paramount Pictures announced
they had greenlit a sequel to the 1986 aviation-action
classic “Top Gun,” my initial
reaction came with a full-bodied shudder of
terror — one that would make any Academy
Award-winning actor envious of my dramatic
capabilities.
Like most humans in this world, I do not
spend enough time working on my mental
health, but that one thing I have (semi)
successfully accomplished throughout the
last two-and-a-half decades was suppressing
traumatic childhood memories related
to forced viewings and inescapable listening
parties to the movie so named above.
Needless to say, but this news unleashed a
cascade of horrible memories: I immediately
hated “Top Gun: Maverick” on principle
alone.
You see, my late father loved “Top Gun”
to the point of driving everyone in the
household nuts with his obsession. It
seemed like it was always being rented at
the video store, always on when it hit the
basic cable channels, and its soundtrack
was certainly blasted on a loop whenever
he would go into the basement to exercise.
(He refused to put on the headphones, stating
the wires got in the way of the
NordicTrack skis or the treadmill belt.
Note: He was totally lying.)
While this may seem like a cute collection
of little stories, ask yourself these
questions: If you had to watch the same
movie over and over again — regardless of
the wonderful and iconic beach volleyball
scene therein — wouldn’t you be a little
miffed by having these memories unlawfully
dredged up by a movie studio looking for
nostalgic-induced cash? And if you had to
listen to the instrumental anthem, and the
songs “Danger Zone,” “Playing with the
Boys” and “Take My Breath Away” (the
regulated cool down tune) every day for
months on end, wouldn’t you feel a little
peeved by the revival of the film that
caused so much childhood angst?
From the jump, I was completely committed
to ignoring the existence of this film
and I would not be swayed from my path
despite the use of advanced technology to
bring the audience into the cockpit of an
F/A-18 Hornet, or by the fact that Tom
Cruise and his charming smile would be
reprising his role as the cocky and reckless
fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, or
by the assurance that Kenny Loggins and
his catchy torture music would be limited
on the new soundtrack.
Naturally, I found myself having to go
see it and, against my better judgement,
was completely blown away by the spectacle
and the story within. Had my father
been alive to see my reaction to this film,
he would have laughed just as loudly as the
soundtrack he played ad nauseum in the
basement.
What makes “Top Gun: Maverick” work
so well is that it fine-tunes the best elements
in Tony Scott’s original movie and
applies them to today’s modern audience.
The result is a film that is saturated with
the latest technological advances that put
you right in the skies with the pilots on
their missions, but it is also infused with
enough humor, drama, and heart to make
it emotionally rich and engaging as well.
When the film opens, we are re-introduced
to our titular call sign character
(Cruise), who may be older but is not exactly
wiser as he continually pushes boundaries
and ticks off admirals with the same
unrepentant attitude he had back in his
heyday. For the past several decades, he
has been working as a test pilot for the next
generation of fighter jets, trying his best to
stay under the radar with his personality
while simultaneously trying to elevate the
importance of these programs when he
learns they are in line to be scrapped for
unmanned drones.
After a test in front of another admiral
goes terribly wrong (well, technically, it
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
went right until
Maverick decided to
push the fighter to
its breaking speed)
and he is braced for
a swift firing, his
bacon is saved by his
old friend Tom
“Iceman” Kazansky, now the Commander
of the Pacific Fleet. Maverick’s new mission:
to train a cohort of young aviators for
a top-secret assignment that combines a
number of precision skills that Maverick
possesses. It is made abundantly clear he is
not to lead the dangerous mission himself,
but only determine who will be chosen to
undertake the life-endangering task.
Among the candidates for the mission
are a mirror image in Hangman (Glen
Powell), the studious Phoenix (Monica
Barbaro) and her second-seater Bob (Lewis
Pullman), a semi-brash Payback (Jay Ellis)
and overly eager Fanboy (Danny Ramirez).
There is also Rooster (Miles Teller), the
grown-up son of Maverick’s late friend
Goose (played in the original by Anthony
Luge Lessons
Messenger photo by Pat Donahue
Here, 12-year-old Gabby Abner tried her hand at the luge tryouts held June 4 and 5 on the Derby Hill at Big Run Park. The event
was part of a nationwide search that will give as many as 600 participants a chance to tryout for 80 spots available to train on
the ice at Lake Placid with the USA Luge Olympic team. Those participants also help with the search for future athletes like 15-
year-old Caylin Weaver of Indianapolis, who is assisting Abner as she heads down the ramp to start her ride down the hill. It was
Abner’s first time for the yearly tryout that she participated in with her cousin. Luge Coach Aiden Kelly said the Columbus area
and the Derby Hill at Big Run is one of his favorite sites to get recruits over the years.
TOP GUN
Continued from page 11
Edwards), who cannot stand the sight of
him.
While there is plenty of nostalgia
packed into “Top Gun: Maverick,” what
saves the film from being a soulless memory
exercise with great aerial action is the
sincerity of the emotional connection
between Maverick and Rooster, Maverick
and Iceman, and, to a lesser extent,
Maverick and Penny (Jennifer Connelly),
the admiral’s daughter he has dated onand-off
since the 80s. Their core connection
and relationships drive this film to a different
level of emotional depth, allowing all
the characters to show more vulnerability
than has been allowed in action films of
yore (including the original).
If you’re worried that this film is going
to bum you out with all of its emotions,
don’t be. There is plenty of humor and
breathtaking aerial shots and action
sequences to balance that heft. But “Top
Gun: Maverick” is unafraid to peel back
the layers of its prickly and emotionally
stunted hero and Cruise and co. are game
for the display.
Overall, much to my disappointment,
“Top Gun: Maverick” is a wonderful film
that seamlessly blends action, adventure,
humor and heart to all of the aspects within.
Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce
To create a positive environment for the development and success of business
Chamber Open is July 11
It’s time to grab your golf bags and get
your swing back in shape, because registration
is now open for this summer’s Chamber
Open golf outing on July 11 at Hickory Hills
Golf Club.
Golfers are encouraged to form teams,
but can register individually for this full day
of golf, food, and fellowship. It’s a Monday,
so why not call it a three-day weekend for
the sake of golf?
This is a fantastic way to get out of the
office for a day and network, celebrate your
work team’s accomplishments, or invite
clients or other colleagues to join you on the
links. Non-Chamber members are also welcomed
to join the fun and can use this as a
way to meet other Chamber members in a
more casual environment.
The day tees off at 10 a.m. and will conclude
by 4 p.m., with plenty of food along the
way. There will also be a silent auction and
goodie bags for golfers. This year’s event will
support the Grove City Buddy Ball program.
Those interested in participating as a
golfer, or supporting by way of sponsorship
or auction donation, can call the Chamber
office: 614-875-9762, or visit the Chamber
Open’s website: www.gcchamber.org/chamber-golf-outing/
Here’s a look back at our 2021 winners–
Can they retain their titles, or will new competition
take the top prizes?
2021 winners
•First Place Team: Mojo on Broadway.
•Second Place Team: Franklin County
Banking Center.
•Skills contest winners: Michelle Fulks
(Stark & Associates), Chris Roach (Roach
Enterprises), Brad Pence (Local Waste), Ike
Stage (Mayor, Grove City).
A sampling of the products recently available at the 2022 Grove City Chamber Farmers’
Market. Every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the Grove City Town Center, shoppers
can find the latest locally-made goods and fresh seasonal produce.
Farmers’ Market back in season!
The 2022 Grove City Chamber Farmers’
Market kicked off in mid-May and is
under way with a variety of local products–from
made-from-scratch treats to
local produce and meats.
The first half of the Market, or the
‘spring market’ as some may know it, features
more locally-made goods in addition
to meats and some produce. Spring flowers,
strawberries, and asparagus are popular
early season items fresh from the
gardens.
The summer portion of the Market will
kick off mid-June as summer produce begins
to come into season. If all goes well
in the growing season, Market patrons
can expect to see favorites such as sweet
corn and melons shortly after. As always,
seasonal produce is a hot item and customers
are advised to arrive early as sell
outs can and will occur.
The Market is open every Saturday
this summer from 8 a.m. to noon. The
Market can be found in the Grove City
Town Center, specifically in the large
parking lot along Park Street on the west
side of Broadway. In ‘building speak,’ this
Taste of Grove City was a satisfying success
The second year of A Taste of Grove
City’s “four weeks of yum” has come to a delicious
conclusion as a satisfying success.
With it came a sweet victory for several
restaurants. Below are the winners of this
year’s weeks:
•Burger and Sandwich Week
First Place: The Academy Grill at SWCA
Second Place: Zamarelli’s Pizza Palace
Third Place: Blu-Willy’s
•Pizza Week
Second Place: Grandstand Pizza
Third Place: Tammy’s Pizza
•Sweet Treat Week
Third Place: Siam Hibachi
With specials, discounts, and new menu
items over four weeks and located all across
the community, diners were treated to old
favorites and found new favorites, as well.
As Chamber board member Chris Moscato
said, the four-week-long event made for
catch up with co-workers as he and Mid-
Ohio Food Collective colleagues dined at
two-timer Burger Week winner Academy
Grill.
“It’s a great format for busy professionals,”
he said.
Besides Chris, many other board members,
Chamber staff members, and sponsors
all made the rounds of the many locations
over the course of four weeks. Many took
photos and created fun videos which can be
found across social media. On Facebook,
look for @grovecitychamber or @atasteofgrovecity
Connecting restaurants with sponsor
businesses made for additional, and unique,
networking opportunities. Many restaurants
and sponsor representatives made efforts
to meet up and share a meal during
their week or weeks.
Chris said he made an effort to dine with
his personal favorites (including Grove City
Nutrition and Grandstand Pizza), but also
find places. He said he made a point to dine
at The Academy Grill because of their previous
Burger Week win, and because after
Burger Week they would close for the summer
break since it’s operated at the South-
Western Career Academy.
It’s the hope of everyone involved that A
Taste of Grove City continues to grow each
year as everyone looks forward to the next
“four weeks of yum”!
Taste of Grove City Supports MOFC
This year A Taste of Grove City supported
Mid-Ohio Food Collective and as a
Senior Project Manager with MOFC, this
gave Chris something else to talk about. As
he made the rounds of restaurants he could
chat could MOFC’s role in the community
and how those from the restaurant industry
can get involved.
“We’re always looking for Mid-Ohio
Kitchen volunteers,” he said of the MOFC
topics covered on his dining trips. He also
met with Career Academy students working
at The Academy Grill and showed them
MOFC’s career opportunities page so they
can consider MOFC for future careers.
But it’s not seasoned and professional
kitchen help MOFC is looking for. Chris
said they’re always in the market for volunteers
and the need is continuously great.
Specifically with school out for the summer,
they’ll see a volume increase across
Franklin County as they operate Summer
Food Programs for Kids. These programs
serve lunches for school-aged children who
would typically rely on school for lunch.
Another summer-exclusive volunteer opportunity
is working in the gardens at the
Grove City location. Chris said they have
over 40 garden beds and work is underway
to expand upon the program and the space.
Those with green thumbs, or those looking
to earn a green thumb, would be most welcomed
help this summer.
Mid-Ohio Food Collective continues to
expand and reimagine their services as they
continue to serve more individuals and more
families. As food prices rise, more families
and individuals need some form of assistance
in meeting nutritional needs.
A new market-style location has opened
to provide a traditional shopping experience
for those needing food assistance. The market
also offers additional volunteer opportunities.
assistance, or other, visit
WE:LEAD 10th Women’s Business Forum
This year’s Grove City Area Chamber of
Commerce WE:LEAD Women’s Business
Forum was a huge success as women across
Central Ohio recharged and networked at
the 10th annual event held at the Aladdin
Shrine Center.
Attendees heard from six unique speakers
who spoke on varying themes relating to
confidence, self-awareness, and how we can
reframe challenges and emerge from setbacks
or failures.
•Keynote speaker Misty Johnson (Renewed,
Repurposed, and Restored) dove
deep into her personal past and personal
Pam Brown
story to share that there is always redemption
and replenishment following our setbacks.
•Dr. Ellie Scott (Stringtown Vet) engaged
her audience with a Lego building activity
to drive home her points regarding
communication. While hopefully the room
was full of communication masters, the
room wasn’t exactly full of Lego masters!
•Rachel Finney (Columbus Humane)
shared how we can take a different approach
to our “baggage” in life. “Instead of
thinking of your “baggage” as what holds
you down, baggage can be exactly what we
•Jen Kelley (My Business Resource)
brought a reframing message in the sense
of reframing shame and failures so that we
can focus on what is within our control and
then move on.
•Christie Engler (Consolidated Employer
Services) shared some do’s and don’ts
of employee management with the goal of a
work environment that protects the business,
but also doesn’t violate the rights of
employees.
•Deanna Stewart (Mount Carmel Foundation)
presented a message rooted in confidence
and care for one’s self–from
listening to your body and mood for health
cues, to seeking out mentors as you strive
for new goals.
This was the first time since 2019 that
the WE:LEAD Forum was held both in-person
and its originally-intended date of mid-
May. That in mind, this was the first ‘true’
WE:LEAD Forum experience for many, but
given the eagerness for 2023, it certainly
won’t be the last.
events include book club meet-ups,
local shopping, and dining gatherings, and
other small group outings. More about
HR Essentials: Employee retention in the age of turnover
By Rachel Kutay
My Business Resource
HR Essentials is the Human Resources information
column written by Grove City Area
Chamber of Commerce member Rachel Kutay
specifically for the Chamber. Rachel owns and
operates local business My Business Resource,
and is active with the Chamber’s
WE:LEAD program.
Are you making a difference where you
work? Do you feel valued in your organization?
Are you treated fairly? If you answered
‘no’, or ‘maybe,’ or ‘I don’t know’ then you
might be one of the millions of people just
waiting for (or actively pursuing) your next
job.
For business owners, the “Great Resignation”
has presented a difficult challenge —
how do we retain our workforce?
It hurts to lose a great employee and can
leave you scrambling to cover their workload
and find a replacement.
To understand the solution to how we retain
employees, we need to first understand
why they leave in the first place. One of the
most common reasons?
The job and environment makes it too
stressful to stay. Compensation and benefits
are one of the most common drivers of
turnover.
Many employees are looking for more
than a job — if you can’t provide mentoring
and professional development, the best employees
will go where they can find it.
Why is this so important?
Retention directly affects the company’s
bottom line. It can take anywhere from two
to six months for a new employee to become
productive.
Even after that time period, as employees
gain more tenure they typically become
more and more productive.
So how to we start to turn the Great Resignation
into the Great Retention? Retention
starts with attention to people.
Employees disengage for four main reasons:
(1) the job, (2) their manager, (3) the organization
and (4) the team. Let’s address these
challenges one by one.
First, we can start by designing jobs with
growth opportunities. Begin with a clear job
description and include the learning and development
that can be expected as part of
the position.
It is critically important to understand
the market rate for each of your positions.
Salaries have escalated extremely quickly
over the past several months, and if you
don’t know what your competition is paying
you can’t attract the best talent.
Next, develop great leaders in your management
team. In a recent study, confidence
was listed as the most valued trait in a manager,
followed by effective communication
skills.
Leading by example goes a long way to
improve morale. Scheduling regular one-onone
conversations is important to ensure
that employees have regular check ins with
their manager and a voice in the organization.
Employees have more choice than ever,
so it’s important to communicate not just
what your company does, but what your
company believes in.
It helps if employees understand how
their jobs play into a larger goal or mission.
Provide clear and early communication
about your culture and values.
Regularly take the “temperature” of your
team by conducting engagement surveys to
know how satisfied your team is.
Do they need more flexibility in their
schedules? Is remote or hybrid work an option?
Finally, employees who are connected to
their teammate are more likely to stay with
their company.
Your onboarding can include formal and
informal ways to meet coworkers and become
embedded in the organization. Team
retreats and events help your employees
bond.
When employees leave, ask them why in
an exit interview. Then create strategies to
address any issues raised. People drive your
business, and unhappy people can grind it
to a halt.
These practical and impactful retention
strategies will help you take action.
Danbury Senior Living
On May 17, Danbury Senior Living invited
various Chamber and community members
to join in their ribbon cutting ceremony.
