8 Thursday June 16 2022 Resource centre targeted by thieves • By Emily Moorhouse ROWLEY RESOURCE Centre members are asking the community to keep an eye out for electrical tools stolen from their garden shed. The stolen items include a Ryobi electric lawnmower, an electric weed trimmer, an electric leaf blower and an electric power drill. The shed at 89 Rowley Ave was broken into about three weeks ago by someone cutting the bolt on the padlock. The centre has since had two new padlocks put on the shed. Centre director Evelyn Kenneally said it was extremely disappointing that someone would do something like Evelyn Kenneally this, especially to a community centre. “I just feel a bit disappointed, it’s just happening all over the place with people coming in and stealing stuff, just disappointed really.” Kenneally said the centre had never been targeted by thieves before, but she knows there are things like this happening around the city. “That somebody would come in THEFT: The resource centre used the tools stolen to keep the property tidy. I think people are just struggling at the moment.” She said she has filed a police report and is looking to get the tools replaced if the centre can get funding as well as have security cameras installed in the future. Kenneally posted on the centre’s Facebook page and is urging anyone who has seen or heard anything in relation to the stolen tools to come forward. “These tools were essential to keeping our property tidy and (we) would really like them returned with no questions asked.” All smiles as museum hits fundraising target • By Emily Moorhouse IT WAS smiles all round from volunteers at the New Brighton Museum, knowing it can finally purchase the building on Hardy St. The museum was granted $105,000 from Lottery Environment and Heritage, which gives it enough to buy the building with some leftover. Museum secretary Peggy Butterfield said volunteers were “over the moon” to hear of the lovely news. “We were holding our breath because we needed to find out by the end of June. It’s good news for the community for once, instead of bad news,” Butterfield said. The leftover money will go towards upgrades to both the inside and outside of the 110-year-old building, with the roof needing repairs and the walls a revamp. Butterfield said the museum has already had engineers come through and plans are in place for upgrades, which the volunteers will be fundraising for to cover costs. She said the idea of buying the museum was first mentioned two years ago, so it was great SUCCESS: Secretary Peggy Butterfield outside the New Brighton Museum. to finally have that “sense of security”. “It takes away the worry of having to worry about applying for grants to pay the rent all the time because that was getting quite hard,” she said. Museum president Tim Baker had a new sign made as a ‘thank you’ for the grants and donations received. The lottery grant was applied for in February through a professional fundraiser and Butterfield said the money should come through any day now. She said the museum received more than 200 likes when she shared the news on its Facebook page. “We don’t get a lot of visitors but obviously we’ve got a big following, people support us because they want to see us keep the museum, they don’t want to see it go,” she said. “It’s a big relief and I think the community are right behind us.” Let’s use water like we oughta Charges are in the pipeline for households in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula that regularly use large amounts of water. When the district’s water use doubles over summer, the cost of delivering water goes up significantly too. That increase in demand isn’t spread evenly, with most of the increase due to a small proportion of households. When demand on our water supply network is at its peak we’re at risk of not being able to supply enough water to properties, which could have serious impacts on public health, and our ability to fight fires. If everyone uses water like we oughta, we won’t need to spend as much money expanding our water supply network, and it will also improve the sustainability of our city’s water supply, which helps us achieve our climate change goals. You have time to find the leak and get it fixed.
