Proposed Changes for District’s Gambling
Machine Rules
The Council are considering changes to two clauses
in our Gambling (Class 4) Venue Policy relating to
how gambling machine numbers will be managed
going forward.
Currently there isadistrict wide cap of one
gambling machine per 120 people 18 years old or
older, which would allow for afurther 133 Class 4
gaming machines (pokies) in the District with the
current population.
Four options are being considered, including the
status quo, and we’re asking the community to
rank them from most to least preferred.
Council will also consider whether tointroduce a
‘relocation policy’ that could determine if gambling
machines (pokies) are allowed toberelocated if a
venue were to close.
“The community can also provide feedback on any
other aspect of the Gambling Venue or Board Venue
Policies, where we’re not currently proposing any
changes,” says Policy Analyst, Lynley Beckingsale.
As part of its review process Council asked
residents toparticipate in an anonymous survey to
determine the appetite for change concerning our
current gambling policies.
“Survey participants told us that we should consider
changes tohow we manage the number of
gambling machines inthe District,” says Lynley.
Formal submissions can be made online at
waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk or hardcopies are
available from our Service Centres.
Submissions close Monday 11July 2022.
Waikuku Beach Spatial Plan Expressions
of Interest
The Council are creating aspatial plan for the
Waikuku Beach Reserves to ensure the community
can enjoy and use these spaces to the fullest,
while also protecting any areas of natural and
cultural significance.
Before we create the plan, we want to hear from
any clubs, organisations or individuals who are
interested in using aWaikuku Beach Reserve for
their recreational activity.
We’re looking for already established organisation
or clubs, orthose that have anidea or have
identified aneed, who are looking for alocation to
host their activity.
Aspatial plan is essentially a‘blueprint’ for how
space can or should be allocated to ensure it’s used
in the most strategic, effective and responsible way.
This means that we can safeguard the space over
the long term, ensuring that we’re caring for the
environment and be considerate of the community.
Activities will need to meet acriteria toensure
they are viable and will not result in any significant
change in how the area is used.
We also want to hear from the community about
the kinds of activities you would like or wouldn’t
like to see taking place in the reserves.
At this stage weare taking expressions of interest
and working with groups to determine their
suitability. Ifyou’d like to know more, please head
