Support to navigate challenges By DAVID HILL Support is available for new school principals as they navigate the challenges of their sector. At least seven North Canterbury principals have retired in the last 12 to 18 months, with many facing ‘‘exhaustion’’, says Simon Green. Mr Green stepped down as principal at Amberley School last month to take up aposition with Evaluation Associates, supporting new principals in Canterbury, Otago and the Chatham Islands. He says there is areal need for support for local principals, who have tackled earthquake rebuilds and Covid restrictions over the last decade. ‘‘There’s alot of young principals in Canterbury coming through and deputy principals stepping up as there’s been a lot retiring, more than there usually would be. ‘‘In North Canterbury, they used to be in the role for 20 or 30 years. CA Simon Green ‘‘It’s areal sign of exhaustion.’’ Mr Green’s new role sees him working remotely or going out to visit principals. ‘‘It’s pretty cool to share my knowledge with new principals coming through. ‘‘I’m hearing alot are starting out and finding the job isn’t for them, which is a shame because we want to keep good principals. ‘‘We’ve got some stunning teachers and principals in Canterbury.’’ Mr Green has served 25 years in education in North Canterbury, including 14 years as principal. He started out at Woodend School, before becoming deputy principal at Loburn School and then Cust School. He was principal at North Loburn School for eight years and spent six years at Amberley School. Mr Green is continuing to serve as Rangiora High School Board of Trustees chairperson, supporting newly appointed principal Bruce Kearney. During his time at North Loburn School the school began competing in the AgrikidsNZ competition and the Garden to Table programme was introduced. ‘‘When you see that those innovations have developed and have become sustainable it’s quite satisfying,’’ he says. ‘‘Amberley is aspecial community too and it has some amazing teachers.’’ New home for Freemasons By SHELLEY TOPP Rangiora’s Freemasons areplanningto build anew lodge in Ravenswood.
