The Grove City High School baseball team advanced to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Championship Game
after defeating the Mason Comets 4-1. On June 11, the Greyhounds took on Sylvania Northview at Canal Park in Akron but were
defeated 6-1 for the state title. Before heading up to Akron, the Grove City community lined the streets in support of the team.
A sensational season
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
It is easy for athletes to lose sight of great accomplishments
when their season ends with a loss, particularly one that made
them feel as if their hearts had been ripped out of their chests.
But as the players on the Grove City High School boys varsity
baseball team begin to heal after coming up short in their first
state championship final, the impact they have made on their
storied program is starting to come back into focus.
Senior outfielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider says high expectations
are always attached to a new season, but he added they do
not set the bar at a level where they automatically believe they
will make it far into a post-season run.
“Our coach would not like for us to do that,” he said.
It is not that head coach Ryan Alexander is a proponent of low
expectations per se — “they are trained at a high level because
they expect to compete at a high level,” he explained — but he
would much rather they stick with the tried-and-true “three
goal” rule.
“We set three goals for the beginning of each season,” said
Alexander, a special education teacher who has been coaching
the varsity team since 2009. “One goal is to win the OCC-Ohio
Conference, another goal is to reach 20 wins, and the third goal
is to win a district championship. Anything else after that is just
icing on the cake.”
He said abiding by the three goal rule helps keep them
focused on the “one game at a time” mentality but he did admit
he doesn’t mind when shoulder chips are carried over into a new
Grove City High School baseball players Braxton Bryant,
Braydon Clark, and Zak Zigman hold up their trophy after
defeating Mason in the state semi-finals.
Attending a government meeting is not
often at the top of the to-do list for most
children. If they happen to be found in
attendance on a particular night, it is usually
attributed to the lack of availability of
a trusted sitter or a school making it a
requirement to earn a credit for a corresponding
course.
But a group of preteens made it a point
to come out to the village of Urbancrest
council meeting on June 14 to press their
elected officials on a singular issue — the
continued closure of the Vaughn E.
Hairston Southwest Community Center.
“I would like to know when the center
will be open for the youth,” said Britton
Jones, 12.
For the past two years, the popular destination
for athletic recreation and educational
programming has been closed to the
general public. It was initially believed to
be a temporary closure to slow the spread
of a novel coronavirus but then a loss of
state funding prompted the site’s long-time
manager (the YMCA of Central Ohio) to
cut recreational programming at the location.
Although the organization still runs
youth development programs such as Head
Start, Positive Alternative Learning for
Students (PALS) and after-school care out
of the site, it fell on the village and its advisory
committee to find partners to run
recreational activities.
It also didn’t help matters that thousands
of dollars in upgrades to the facility
were needed.
“It was in bad shape for a while there,”
said village Mayor Joseph Barnes Sr.
SEASON
Continued from page 1
season if any number of them are not met.
Take, for instance, their season-ending loss last year to
Lancaster High School.
It was the district championship final and the
Greyhounds had not been in this position since 2017.
Although evenly matched, they were confident they were
going to pull off a win against the Golden Gales but lost 2-
1 in an 11-inning thriller.
“We felt like we should have won that game,” said
Ritlinger-Nirider. “We should have won that game.”
He said the loss left a “bad taste” in their mouth, and it
propelled them to do better, to be better, this season. With
an even more competitive schedule — they played multiple
powerhouse schools from the south — they managed to be
just that.
The first team accomplishment of the season was winning
the conference and reaching that 20 game-win
threshold. Then came a rematch with the Golden Gales in
the Division I district championship game. It may have
taken them two days to do it (inclement weather delayed
the regularly scheduled game) but they came away with a
2-0 win in eight innings, propelling them to the Ohio High
School Athletic Association’s regional semi-finals for the
first time since 2014.
What followed, said Ritlinger-Nirider, was a “whirlwind”
of nail-biting games and up-and-down emotions that
saw them defeat Hilliard Darby 2-0 on June 3 and last
year’s Division I state champion New Albany 2-0 the following
day.
And then the school was back in the state tournament
final four for the first time since back-to-back seasons in
2011 and 2012.
Ritlinger-Nirider was at the game in 2012 when the #1
ranked Greyhounds met the #2 ranked Cincinnati
Archbishop Moeller at Huntington Park in Columbus. He
said he remembers a crowd packed with fans of the
Crimson and Blue, the feeling of overwhelming sadness
when they lost 3-2, and a burgeoning determination that
he would avenge the loss and send his beloved team to the
finals when he was old enough to play the high school
level.
While it was definitely a team effort, the Greyhounds
did beat an upstart Mason High School 4-1 on June 10 at
Canal Park in Akron and made it to their first Division I
state championship final.
“It was a very special moment in our school’s history, in
our program’s history and to our community,” said
Alexander. “We have had some fantastic teams that
have come along through the years but no one in
our storied history has made it this far.
“But that’s baseball for you. It’s a game of skill,
COMMUNITY CENTER
Continued from page 1
While there is still some work to be completed, village
officials were able to give Jones and his group of
inquisitive friends an answer to their most pressing
question.
“The Vaughn E. Hairston Southwest Community
Center is open to the youth and the public as of (June
15),” said Barnes.
According to Barnes, the community center was
able to open this summer primarily due to grant funding
provided by the Franklin County Department of
Job and Family Services. He said the county has designated
the community center as a “Ready to Earn”
worksite for teenagers seeking employment and they
will serve as camp counselors for daytime youth programming.
“We are excited to be able to partner with the county
commissioners and St. Stephen’s Community House
to not only provide our youth with some much needed
summer programming, but our community with access
to the center as well.”
The Southwest Community Center will be open
during the weekday and the hours of availability will
be divided among age groups.
Senior citizens will have access to the facility from
7 a.m. to 11 a.m.; youth ages 7-17 will have access to
the facility from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a free lunch provided
daily; and those with ages that fall in-between
those groups will have access to the facility from 5 p.m.
to 7 p.m.
Use of the facility will be free throughout the month
of June but it will transition to a monthly fee starting
on July 1, 2022. Barnes said the fee schedule will be
$25 for all seniors and young adults who reside in the
www.columbusmessenger.com
a game of inches and ultimately a game of luck. And sometimes
you don’t have that luck and sometimes you do and
it runs out.”
Unfortunately, he said, that is exactly what happened
when the team met Sylvania Northview in the final game,
losing to the Wildcats 6-1 on June 11.
“Our game is small ball and they played it against us
and they played it better than us,” said Alexander. “That’s
just the way it goes sometimes.”
After the loss, the players were plagued by what if’s and
all of their pride in the team’s accomplishments and the
individual accolades were tossed to the wayside. They didn’t
remember that they met all three of their seasonal
goals and they certainly didn’t bask in the knowledge that
they made it to the regionals, the semi-finals or their challenging
division’s final game.
Eventually, those great memories and all of the good
feelings attached to them started to filter back in, so much
so that they can now acknowledge the history that was
made — sort of.
“I think we’re starting to wrap our heads around it but
it is still settling in,” said Ritlinger-Nirider.
Alexander said when it finally does, they ought to be
proud of what they did as a team this season.
“We scrapped all year, we met and surpassed our goals,
and we played the game the right way,” he said. “You can’t
ask for anything more.”
village; $30 for young adults who do not reside in the
village; $15 for non-resident youth; and $10 for youth
who live in the village.
Although the general public will now be able to
access the facility, what the center can offer in terms
of organized programming is currently limited to the
daytime youth programming portion. For instance, the
fitness center will be open for solo or buddy-partner
training but there are no scheduled group workout sessions
led by an instructor at this time.
Much to the disappointment of the children (and
some adults) in attendance, the indoor swimming pool
will also be unavailable as it needs upgrades related to
the pumping system. There is also the question as to
whether it could be adequately staffed due to the
nationwide shortage of lifeguards.
Barnes said while village officials know the
Southwest Community Center still has a ways to go
before it can be fully operational, they are pleased to
have it open to the general public in some capacity
again.
“It has taken us a little while but we are getting
there,” he said.
In other news, Barnes said the village is accepting
applications for youth (especially those who live in
Urbancrest) between the ages of 14-18 to work as daytime
youth counselors at the site through the “Ready
to Earn” program. Inquiries can be made in-person
during normal business hours at the village administrative
office, located at 3357 Central Ave., or by calling
(614) 875-1279. The program will run through the
beginning of August.

At its regular meeting on June 13, the
board of education unanimously approved
a new management agreement with the
members of the South-Western
Administrative Association (SWAA).
Under the terms of the management
agreement, which runs from July 1, 2022
through June 30, 2025, classified administrators
will receive a salary increase of 3
percent in the first two years of the contract,
and a 2.8 percent increase in the
third year. Certificated administrators will
receive a 1 percent salary increase and a 2
percent board paid retirement in the first
two years of the contract, and a 2.8 percent
salary increase in the third year of the contract.
Members of SWAA include school principals,
assistant principals, and some
administrative staff at the District Service
Center.
Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise praised
the members of the association, citing their
tireless work behind the scenes.
“Effective leadership drives culture,
which shapes the experiences and opportunities
our students enjoy each day at
South-Western City Schools,” he said. “Our
administrative team works tirelessly
behind the scenes to account for the needs
of the school community and provide opportunities.”
Members of the board shared a similar
sentiment.
“We applaud our administrative team
members for their service and commitment
to the children of the district,” said board
president Cathy Johnson. “The leadership
our administrators provide is a testament
to their skills in working with children and
education.
“Expectations and demands continue to
increase and our administrative staff continues
to meet the challenge.”
During the meeting, the board also
approved a salary index increase for non-
SWAA members. They include the deputy
superintendent, the executive director of
technology, the executive director of communications,
the assistant superintendents
of curriculum and personnel and
additional DSC staff.
The new management agreement with
the members of SWAA comes on the heels
of recent board approved contracts with
members of its certificated and classified
employees. In April, the board approved a
new three-year collective bargaining agreement
with the Ohio Association of Public
School Employees (OAPSE) Local 211 and
movie-themed activities at 7:30 p.m.
in May the board approved a new threeyear
collective bargaining agreement with
the South-Western Education Association
(SWEA).
Treasurer Hugh Garside said while the
increase in salaries and benefits were higher
than expected in the five-year financial
forecast, the district will be able to maintain
its strong fiscal standing throughout.
“We would not be able to certify these
salary increases if we could not prove that
we have the funds available,” he said.
In other news, the board agreed to waive
a competitive bidding process and declare
an upgrade to the HVAC unit at the Bostic
Center an urgent necessity. They awarded
a $383,029 contract to Speer Mechanical to
provide the upgrades as “expeditiously as
possible.” Garside said he expects the delivery
date of the unit to take at least 40
weeks due to the high demand of raw materials
and continued supply chain issues.
Weather-related cancellation information
is available on the Grove City and The
Naz social media sites or call the weather
hotline at 614-277-3060 the day of the
event.

Fitness in the Park
www.columbusmessenger.com
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
The city of Grove City is inviting citizens to get
active in the park.
The city’s parks and recreation department is now
offering Fitness in the Park, a drop-in workout class.
“Our staff is always looking at creative new ideas to
get people into the parks,” said Grove City Parks and
Recreation Director Kim Conrad. “We wanted to offer
something different this year.”
Fitness in the Park offers a variety of classes with
instruction from local instructors from 6:30 to 7:30
p.m. each Thursday from now through the end of July
in the Town Center Park, 3359 Park St. The classes
include hip-hop fitness with Mike Nicholson, Zumba
led by Chauntel Horaney, yoga with Amber Philips,
and body combat instructed by Trisha Justice.
The free sessions allow residents to drop-in for the
whole class or part of the class. All ages and fitness levels
are encouraged to participate.
“It’s for anyone and everyone,” said Conrad.
According to Conrad, the instructors teach modifications
for those who need to go at a slower pace.
The remaining classes include:
• June 30: hip-hop fitness
• July 7: Zumba
• July 14: yoga
• July 21: body combat
• July 28: Zumba
Residents should dress in activewear and bring
water.
Fitness in the Park has been sponsored by The Ohio
State University Wexner Medical Center. According to
Conrad, the city needed sponsorship for the program to
pay the instructors involved and advertise the classes.
Workout classes may be canceled due to unfavorable
weather conditions. Cancellation information can
be found on the city’s social media pages as well as the
weather hotline at 614-277-3060.
Pets of the week
Calvin and his family
were rescued from
the streets and raised
in a loving foster
home. He is a 3-
month-old cute guy
who is very chatty
and loves to play.
Calvin is neutered,
vaccinated and ready
for his forever home.
He is up for adoption through Colony Cats.
Emma is almost 2
years old. Her kittens
have all been adopted.
Now, she is looking
for her turn for a
furever home. She is
not happy in her foster
home because
some of the other
cats chase her. She
needs a home with fewer cats and with someone
who will work with her to gain her trust.
She is a sweet girl and just needs time to
adjust to a new home. She loves Temptations
cat treats. Emma would do best in a quiet
home with older children. She is up for adoption
through Friends for Life Animal Haven.
These furry friends are available
for adoption at local
rescues and shelters
Belle is a very sweet
little girl. She is a bit
plump and about 2
years old. All of her
kittens have been
adopted, so now
Belle is looking for
her furever home.
She is a bit shy but
loves to sit in her foster
dad’s lap. She
gets along with other
cats. A family with older kids might work out
best for her. Belle is up for adoption through
Friends for Life Animal Haven.
FYI: fflah.org
Cheese is a friendly
cat who would make
a great addition to
any family. He likes to
play and just hang
out. Cheese is very
eager to find a home
of his own. If you are
interested in meeting
Cheese, contact
Colony Cats.
