Maintaining res is an important component 

of safe driving. Tires are some of the hardest 

working parts on a car or truck and are subjected 

to wear and tear every me rubber meets 

the road. 

Tires affect many components of driving, 

including handling, braking and the comfort of 

the ride. Maintaining res makes driving safe 

not only for drivers and their passengers, but 

also for fellow motorists. 

The Naonal Highway Traffic Safety Administraon 

says that, in 2017, 738 fatalies occurred 

because of re-related crashes. Many of 

those crashes were no doubt preventable, and 

that only highlights the importance of maintaining 

res and monitoring their performance. 

Poor re maintenance can lead to premature 

wear and potenally result in a blowout. The 

automove group AAA notes it is important 

to visually inspect res as oen as possible. 

Drivers should look for overall tread wear. Pay 

special aenon to tread wear on one edge of 

the res, which could indicate poor alignment. 

Errac tread wear may mean res are out of 

balance. 

Drivers also should pay aenon to how 

their cars drive and sounds. Unusual vibraon 

or thumping noises suggest issues with the 

res. A car that pulls in one direcon also may 

be experiencing re problems. 

Vehicle owners should be aware of the rou- 

ne maintenance steps that can keep them safe 

and improve the life expectancy of res. 

• Tire pressure: The NHTSA says only 19 percent 

of consumers properly check and inflate 

their res. Keeping res properly inflated is 

one of the most important steps to maintaining 

them. Tires lose around 1 psi per month, and 

underinflated or overinflated res can contribute 

to unusual wear, blowouts and even excessive 

fuel consumpon. 

• Rotaon: Check the owner’s manual or 

recommendaons from the re manufacturer, 

but know that most mechanics advise having 

res rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Rota- 

on helps distribute wear more evenly on res. 

• Balancing: AAA says balancing also helps 

minimize uneven wear and tear. Balanced res 

are achieved by using small weights aached 

to the wheels to limit vibraon of the re and 

wheels as they turn. New res should be balanced, 

and res also should be balanced aer 

one or more is removed to repair a puncture. 

• Alignment: Vehicles have wheel alignment 

measurements that pertain to manufacturers’ 

specificaons. Alignment that falls outside of 

the range can impact handling, fuel economy 

and tread wear. A dri or pull suggests alignment 

problems and should be addressed. 

Vehicle owners should keep re inspecon 

and maintenance in mind as part of their overall 

car care plan.

or islands, in alcoves, garages, or even walk-in 

closets. Those makeshi offices were never 

supposed to be permanent, but as companies 

loosen workplace policies and embrace full 

remote or hybrid working arrangements, professionals

Home addions are a possibility for homeowners 

who need more usable square footage, 

but add-ons may not be the right opon for 

everyone. If adding on won’t work, homeowners 

may want to look up ... at their acs. 

Acs with ample space can make for ideal 

home offices, as they’re away from the hustle 

and bustle of a home’s main floor. That can 

make it easier to concentrate when everyone 

is in the house and reduce the likelihood that 

video calls with colleagues and clients will be 

interrupted by kids and pets. 

Ac conversions are not always possible, 

and the following are three important factors 

homeowners may need to consider before they 

can go forward with such projects. 

1. Dimensions: Both the renovaon experts 

at This Old House and the real estate experts 

at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished 

ac must be a minimum of seven feet 

high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet. 

Requirements may differ depending on where 

homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is 

generally the minimum requirement. An ac 

that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily 

be a lost cause, but it might be costly 

to make adjustments that ulmately align with 

local codes. 

2. Access: Access is another aspect that must 

adhere to local safety guidelines. Many acs 

are accessible only through pulldown ladders, 

but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose 

their ac spaces. A staircase that complies 

with local laws will need to be installed, 

and contractors can work with homeowners to 

build that and esmate the cost. Homeowners 

who simply want to put desks in their acs 

without going with full-fledged conversions are 

urged to adhere to local access requirements 

anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents 

can safely escape acs in the case of a fire or 

another emergency. 

3. Climate control: Acs are converted 

to provide residents with more livable space. 

Converted space is only livable if the climate 

within the ac can be controlled so it’s cool in 

the summer and warm in the winter. An exisng 

HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an 

extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because 

the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, 

forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats 

to offset that discomfort. That also could affect 

the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward 

with an ac renovaon, homeowners should 

contact HVAC professionals to determine if ac 

spaces can be serviced with the exisng units 

and ductwork, or if an alternave arrangement 

must be worked out to make the spaces livable. 

Ac conversions can be great ways to make 

exisng spaces more livable. Homeowners 

considering such projects should pay aenon 

to three important variables as they try to determine 

if ac conversions will work for them.
