Maintaining res is an important component<br />

of safe driving. Tires are some of the hardest<br />

working parts on a car or truck and are subjected<br />

to wear and tear every me rubber meets<br />

the road.<br />

Tires affect many components of driving,<br />

including handling, braking and the comfort of<br />

the ride. Maintaining res makes driving safe<br />

not only for drivers and their passengers, but<br />

also for fellow motorists.<br />

The Naonal Highway Traffic Safety Administraon<br />

says that, in 2017, 738 fatalies occurred<br />

because of re-related crashes. Many of<br />

those crashes were no doubt preventable, and<br />

that only highlights the importance of maintaining<br />

res and monitoring their performance.<br />

Poor re maintenance can lead to premature<br />

wear and potenally result in a blowout. The<br />

automove group AAA notes it is important<br />

to visually inspect res as oen as possible.<br />

Drivers should look for overall tread wear. Pay<br />

special aenon to tread wear on one edge of<br />

the res, which could indicate poor alignment.<br />

Errac tread wear may mean res are out of<br />

balance.<br />

Drivers also should pay aenon to how<br />

their cars drive and sounds. Unusual vibraon<br />

or thumping noises suggest issues with the<br />

res. A car that pulls in one direcon also may<br />

be experiencing re problems.<br />

Vehicle owners should be aware of the rou-<br />

ne maintenance steps that can keep them safe<br />

and improve the life expectancy of res.<br />

• Tire pressure: The NHTSA says only 19 percent<br />

of consumers properly check and inflate<br />

their res. Keeping res properly inflated is<br />

one of the most important steps to maintaining<br />

them. Tires lose around 1 psi per month, and<br />

underinflated or overinflated res can contribute<br />

to unusual wear, blowouts and even excessive<br />

fuel consumpon.<br />

• Rotaon: Check the owner’s manual or<br />

recommendaons from the re manufacturer,<br />

but know that most mechanics advise having<br />

res rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Rota-<br />

on helps distribute wear more evenly on res.<br />

• Balancing: AAA says balancing also helps<br />

minimize uneven wear and tear. Balanced res<br />

are achieved by using small weights aached<br />

to the wheels to limit vibraon of the re and<br />

wheels as they turn. New res should be balanced,<br />

and res also should be balanced aer<br />

one or more is removed to repair a puncture.<br />

• Alignment: Vehicles have wheel alignment<br />

measurements that pertain to manufacturers’<br />

specificaons. Alignment that falls outside of<br />

the range can impact handling, fuel economy<br />

and tread wear. A dri or pull suggests alignment<br />

problems and should be addressed.<br />

Vehicle owners should keep re inspecon<br />

and maintenance in mind as part of their overall<br />

car care plan.<br />

3 factors to consider<br />

before converting an attic<br />

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,<br />

many homeowners suddenly found themselves<br />

in need of more usable square footage in their<br />

homes. Required to work from home due<br />

to social distancing recommendaons, millions<br />

of working professionals suddenly found<br />

themselves seng up shop at kitchen tables<br />

or islands, in alcoves, garages, or even walk-in<br />

closets. Those makeshi offices were never<br />

supposed to be permanent, but as companies<br />

loosen workplace policies and embrace full<br />

remote or hybrid working arrangements, professionals<br />

are seeking more permanent home<br />

office soluons.<br />

Home addions are a possibility for homeowners<br />

who need more usable square footage,<br />

but add-ons may not be the right opon for<br />

everyone. If adding on won’t work, homeowners<br />

may want to look up ... at their acs.<br />

Acs with ample space can make for ideal<br />

home offices, as they’re away from the hustle<br />

and bustle of a home’s main floor. That can<br />

make it easier to concentrate when everyone<br />

is in the house and reduce the likelihood that<br />

video calls with colleagues and clients will be<br />

interrupted by kids and pets.<br />

Ac conversions are not always possible,<br />

and the following are three important factors<br />

homeowners may need to consider before they<br />

can go forward with such projects.<br />

1. Dimensions: Both the renovaon experts<br />

at This Old House and the real estate experts<br />

at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished<br />

ac must be a minimum of seven feet<br />

high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet.<br />

Requirements may differ depending on where<br />

homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is<br />

generally the minimum requirement. An ac<br />

that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily<br />

be a lost cause, but it might be costly<br />

to make adjustments that ulmately align with<br />

local codes.<br />

2. Access: Access is another aspect that must<br />

adhere to local safety guidelines. Many acs<br />

are accessible only through pulldown ladders,<br />

but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose<br />

their ac spaces. A staircase that complies<br />

with local laws will need to be installed,<br />

and contractors can work with homeowners to<br />

build that and esmate the cost. Homeowners<br />

who simply want to put desks in their acs<br />

without going with full-fledged conversions are<br />

urged to adhere to local access requirements<br />

anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents<br />

can safely escape acs in the case of a fire or<br />

another emergency.<br />

3. Climate control: Acs are converted<br />

to provide residents with more livable space.<br />

Converted space is only livable if the climate<br />

within the ac can be controlled so it’s cool in<br />

the summer and warm in the winter. An exisng<br />

HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an<br />

extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because<br />

the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable,<br />

forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats<br />

to offset that discomfort. That also could affect<br />

the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward<br />

with an ac renovaon, homeowners should<br />

contact HVAC professionals to determine if ac<br />

spaces can be serviced with the exisng units<br />

and ductwork, or if an alternave arrangement<br />

must be worked out to make the spaces livable.<br />

Ac conversions can be great ways to make<br />

exisng spaces more livable. Homeowners<br />

considering such projects should pay aenon<br />

to three important variables as they try to determine<br />

if ac conversions will work for them.<br />
