Somali women show
their print-making
SHOCKED, SURREAL and
excited.
Those are the words of firsttime
artist Samira Ahmed as
she watched her print being
hung up on show in Tūranga.
Ahmed is one of eight
Somali women aged between
20 and 70 whose art is now on
display in the Gurigeena: Our
Home exhibition, held by the
Canterbury Somali Association
on the library’s ground floor.
“I don’t think any of us know
how good our artwork is. At
the time I didn’t think it was a
big deal but seeing it up there is
impressive,” Ahmed said.
The exhibition is one of the
ways the association is giving a
voice to the Somali community
in Christchurch, particularly in
the aftermath of the March 15,
2019 terror attacks.
Ahmed’s work is “pretty
much” a self-portrait.
“She’s deep in thought and
whatever she’s thinking about,
it’s very deep. Maybe world
peace or something like that,”
she said.
Ahmed said the class was
so great for the group’s wellbeing
and gave her a little “me
time”.
The group of women attended
eight two-hour classes hosted
by artist and art teacher Janet
Molineaux.
Retail centre
expansion
gets green
light – with
restrictions
THE CITY council has approved
a private plan change that will
allow the Homebase retail centre
on Marshland Rd to expand,
but there will be limitations on
development.
The city council adopted
recommendations made by the
independent hearings panel that
considered the application by
Reefville Properties Ltd to extend
the commercial zone to the north
of Homebase, and the public submissions
received on it.
The panel recommended the
rezoning of residential land to
commercial should be allowed,
with certain restrictions to be included
in the District Plan to limit
the impact of development. It
considered the impact of the retail
centre’s growth on things such as
a safe road network, the nearby
The Palms shopping centre and
the amenity of neighbouring
residential areas.
Restrictions include limiting,
until October 2031, the type of
retail activities allowed at the
centre. The activities include
clothing, footwear or department
stores and supermarkets as part of
the expansion until that date.
Development needs to provide
safe and convenient pedestrian
and cycling connectivity between
the adjoining residential areas
to the west and Marshland Rd.
Recommendations were also
made about the scale and staging
of development.

WE ALL seem to be behaving
ourselves this holidays.
That is the report card of the
Christchurch North Community
Patrol, with chairman Sam Hall
describing the summertime situation
as “pretty
good.”
Park and
picnic areas
have been on
the patrol radar,
standard for this
time of year.
“We haven’t
actua ly had to
report anything
from the picnic areas around,”
Ha l said.
“It was a l very family-orientated,
so it’s been quite good.”
More family groups than usual
seemed to be out, possibly because
the Covid-19 pandemic was preventing
people from leaving town
for a holiday, he said.
Being a frequent presence
was also helpful in deterring
incidents.
December and January were
also the time of year the patrol
focused on monitoring schools,
but no issues had arisen there
either.
Another summertime staple
was fire danger patrol.
No decision
yet to
appeal
declining of
rehabilitation
facility
• By Fiona E lis
THE DEPARTMENT of
Corrections has until February 9
to appeal after permission to build
a contentious rehabilitation centre
for violent offenders in St Albans
was declined.
However, it is remaining tightlipped
on whether or not it is likely
to do so.
Last week the Bristol Street
Resource Consent Hearing panel
declined to grant resource consent
for the Bristol St facility, fo lowing
a hearing in November.
The proposal would have seen
up to 12 men serving sentences
of home detention at 14 Bristol St
while participating in a violenceprevention
programme. Men
with significant untreated mental
health issues would not be eligible
to participate in the programme.
In their decision, city council
appointed commissioners Anthony
Hughes-Johnson QC and Ken
Lawn said they were not satisfied
the site was appropriate for such a
facility.
Corrections acting regional
commissioner Chris O’Brien-
Smith did not answer Nor’West
New’s question on whether an
appeal would be made, but said
corrections would spend the
next few weeks reflecting on the
commissioners’ findings.
Old quarry building gets new piano
• By Emily Moorhouse
AN OLD stone house has
been blessed with the sound
of music with the arrival of a
new piano.
The Singlemen’s Quarters
at Halswell Quarry has
been gifted a working piano
thanks to an anonymous
donor.
The previous piano that sat
in the Singlemen’s Quarters
didn’t make sound when the
keys were pressed, leaving
locals who visited frequently
disappointed with the lack of
music.
Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community
Board member Debbie Mora
was advocating to have a
working piano put in at the
Singlemen’s Quarters for
“many years.”
“I understand the enjoyment
people get from playing
and listening to a piano,” she
said.
Mora made a post on
Facebook to see if anyone
was interested in donating a
piano to the quarry and had a
person that wanted to remain
anonymous offer theirs.
The Singlemen’s Quarters
was built around 1922 and
closed after the February 22,
2011, earthquake, opening to
the public again in 2017 after
undergoing repair work.
Mora said she bumped
into Ryan Dunn and his
two-year-old son Auden who
had visited the Singlemen’s
Quarters the previous day
and attempted to play the old
piano.
“We quickly introduced
Auden to the replacement
piano which he was really
enthralled with and enjoyed.
It was fantastic to see immediate
favour with the replacement
piano,” Mora said.
Quarry Cafe barista Paul
Wadsworth said many people
expressed disappointment
when attempting to play the
old piano that didn’t work.
The new piano would add
an ambience to the area
which will now be a buzz
with the community, he said.
Mora said she’d like to
see the room being used for
morning and afternoon teas
with people using the piano
to entertain others with a
singalong.
Any piano music that
anyone wishes to donate can
be placed in the piano stall.
PLAY: Ryan Dunn and his two-yearold
son Auden were happy to see the
new working piano installed at the
Singlemen’s Quarters, Halswell Quarry.
“A lot of them are from quite
nomadic backgrounds and
they’d never done any art.
They’re elderly women or young
mothers and have not been able
to escape their domesticity.
This was for their well-being,”
Molineaux said.
For the women it was a time to
get together, listen to traditional
music in the background, talk,
and work on their art.
They were presented with
different Somali prints and
each woman chose an image
they connected with. Once
they’d each chosen their images,
Molineaux took them through
the process of print-making.
Said Molineaux: “A lot of
them don’t speak English so I
was teaching by demonstration.
To begin with my ladies were
really shy but towards the middle
of the term they’d gotten used
to me and there was a strong
connection.
“Even now they’re finished,
they don’t realise what they’ve
created because they’ve never
done it before. It’s not a big
collection, eight prints, but what
it does for this group of women
is huge.”
Once they were finished,
Molineaux said she knew they
needed to be made public and
approached Christchurch City
Libraries, which leapt at the
chance to host the exhibition.
“It’s so fabulous to see the
beautiful works of art showcased
for the public. We urge anyone
and everyone to come and check
them out,” city council acting
head of libraries and information
Elaine Sides said.
Be it emotional or analytical,
much is made of the reasons
people transact real estate.
When purchasing or deciding to purchase
there is often robust debate about the rationale
for someone’s decisions. The parties involved
can be vendors, buyers, real estate consultants,
lawyers, valuers, building inspectors and can
now include digital valuation systems.
Everyone wants to play a part, as well as have
a say, and it’s a crowded and often confusing
space.
If it’s an investment property, there’s often a
predetermined strategy based on the financial
benefits or otherwise of the purchase, and
this can be seen in a ‘dollars and cents’, ‘return
versus costs’ framework.
People usually know the rules.
If they spend too much on the purchase or
during renovation and they don’t sell for a
certain amount, then the end result will often
be disappointment. You see this particular
scenario played out most weeks, however
the market we have enjoyed over the past 18
months saw the reverse of this: astronomical
figures achieved regardless of the initial cost of
the property and subsequent investment.
But not everything is analytical. In fact, some
of the biggest motivations for people to buy
or sell are deeply emotional and might make
sense only to them.
Examples I’ve noted over the years have
included the purchase of neighboring
properties.
The disparaging ‘nosey neighbor’ label gets
bandied about more than I care for, but I’ve
seen significant prices paid by neighbors
who wanted to protect boundaries or views,
or wanted other family members to live close
by. They believed in the value of the location
and in some cases had waited patiently for
the opportunity. Owners that chose to sell at
auction often achieved wonderful premiums
because of this.
Another emotional factor I’ve witnessed is the
acrimonious split, where you see two common
scenarios: the ‘I don’t care because I’m off to a
better life’ and the ‘I’ll fight you every step of
the way because I feel betrayed and belittled’.
The skill required to navigate these situations
with care and professionalism isn’t the domain
of everyone and I’d always suggest doing
significant due diligence to find a professional
who has the skill to look after all parties whilst
delivering the best result, because there may
be an emotional minefield ahead.
And before you think it can’t be done, it can;
I’ve seen it.
But for me, perhaps the most emotional of
all sales transactions are the ones involving
couples who – having lived long and
wonderful lives together – must sell to move
into supportive care.
You walk through properties full of nostalgic
memories, photos, books, furniture,
mementoes and ‘stuff’. The stuff of life and you
realize on their behalf how hard it is.
That’s when emotion really comes to the fore.
In one example that comes to mind, I had the
enormous privilege of meeting a couple that
had lived a full and valued life, but it was time
to move.
They worry, have they left it too late? And (this
is common) I worry that we have a deadline
hanging over us requiring a sale by a certain
date so they can move to the residential
village.
Their friends worry about auctioning, which
we believed was the best process due to the
deadlines just mentioned – and the nature of
their property – and their family worry about
all the things families lose sleep over when
they have elderly parents.
Economics are important, of course, but the
emotional factors in all of this are much more
important.
So why share this?
It could be that I want our elderly clients to
move safely and with dignity to their new
home.
It could be because my own parents are now
at that age and although they tell me in no
uncertain terms that they are never moving, I
worry every winter.
Or it could be that no matter what any of us
think, people will make their own decisions. It
might be purely financially driven or it might
be deeply emotional. It’s important to find
out which it is before you wade in. And for
real estate professionals working in this space,
know what’s best, do that and more, and
remember that life is a mixture of facts and
feelings.
Shooting goals to raise money for cancer
• By Emily Moorhouse
TWO YOUNG netballers shot
more than 2500 goals between
them to raise money for the Cancer
Society.
Izzy Davies and Amelia Osborn,
both 11, participated in Cancer Society’s
Shoot for the Moon challenge,
raising money through shooting
goals for a chosen sport.
The challenge has a set target of
384 goals as the moon is 384,000km
away from the earth, however, the
girls have taken it upon themselves to
go above and beyond.
Amelia shot 544 of her 500 goals
and raised $443 of her $350 target
while Izzy shot exactly 2000 of her
2000 target and raised $336, exceeding
her $250 goal.
The funds raised have gone towards
supporting people with cancer
across the Canterbury-West Coast
region as well as funding cancer
research and programmes to help
reduce cancer risk.
The Marshland School pupils play
netball for the same team at St Francis
of Assisi Netball Club, St Albans,
with Amelia on goal attack and Izzy
on goal shoot.
Amelia’s mum Bex Osborn teaches
the girls at Marshland School
and coaches their netball team.
She saw the challenge on Facebook
and asked the girls if they would be
interested.
“They were really keen. They go out
and practise most days, they love it,”
Osborn said.
“They wanted to push themselves
a little bit further really, Amelia on
CHALLENGE: Izzy Davies (left) and Amelia Osborn participated in
Cancer Society’s Shoot for the Moon challenge and shot more than
2500 goals between them.
the very first day shot 126 goals and
said well this is going to be done and
dusted pretty quick.”
The girls, who have known each
other since they were six weeks old,
shot their goals during netball games
and after school using each other’s
hoops at home.
Both girls wanted to give back to
the charity as they know people who
have had cancer and said it’s good to
help others.
Although, they admitted it was
hard work fitting in shooting
their goals with Amelia sometimes
having to stay at school late shooting
goals.
Osborn said she was extremely
proud of both Amelia and Izzy for
their hard work and determination
to complete the challenge.
“It’s nice to have children that
realise the importance of giving back
and that are empathetic to other
people and other people’s needs,” she
said.
Pupils use Minecraft to redesign red zone
CHISNALLWOOD Intermediate
School pupils are using a popular
computer game to redesign the
red zone.
With the school’s focus of
community this term, the year
6-9 pupils are building their very
own community through the
Minecraft: Education Edition
programme.
Being located less than 1km
from the red zone, the teachers
decided to create a project for
pupils that would not only give
back to the community but teach
them how to act as one.
The pupils built an exact
replica of the red zone,
photographing the red zone
and then overlaying it into the
Minecraft world using coding
with help from M:EE global
mentor Nathan Scott from
Cyclone.
Teacher Anna Duncan said
implementing Minecraft has
positively ignited the school year
and pupils are engaged when
using it.
“Kids that never really
show any enthusiasm towards
learning and often disengage are
now getting involved. They’re
asking really great questions
about the topics we’re teaching
through Minecraft and their
understanding has noticeably
improved.”
Thirty-one pupils worked
together to establish the best
plot of land for their project,
including infrastructure and
environmental aspects.
One sports-loving team argued
the land needed to be close to a
river so they could offer rowing
at their sports centre.
Duncan said it’s encouraged
the pupils to collaborate more as
they are all working in the same
world and asking each other
questions.
Deputy principal Iva Hamilton
agreed and said “it’s not a game.
It’s a tool for education. There is
a need for communication with
digital tools that I didn’t
expect, and the kids learnt
that too.”
“I’d say the class was 90 per
cent happy with the outcome
of land divisions. They came to
understand the need to adapt,
negotiate and make do for the
greater good of the community,”
said teacher Tui Waters.
Next on the agenda for the
school is building animal
kingdoms to expand students’
thinking around habitats and
wildlife survival.
COLLABORATION:
Pupils had to
work together
and compromise
on a final plot for
the land as well
as buildings that
would feature.
Tart up your meals with pumpkin and lemon
Tarts are good. Tarts
with roast pumpkin
and garlic are even
better. Roasting the
pumpkin brings out the
sweetness and flavour
in this recipe, then the
rest is easy.
Roast pumpkin and garlic
tart
Serves 6-8
Ingredients
Pastry:
2 cups flour
½ tsp salt
80g butter, cubed
1 egg
1 Tbsp cold water
TWO TARTS: Make a roast pumpkin and
garlic tart for everyday eating, or a lemon
tart for a special occasion. PHOTOS:
BABICHE MARTENS, GUY WILLIAMS/ODT
Filling:
400g peeled chopped pumpkin
6 cloves garlic, peeled and
chopped
½ tsp paprika
2 Tbsp olive oil
100g feta, crumbled
2 Tbsp thyme leaves
2 eggs, lightly beaten
¾ cup cream
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cup grated parmesan
Directions
Preheat the oven to 180degC.
Place the pumpkin, garlic,
paprika and oil on an oven tray,
tossing to combine. Roast for
30 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from the oven.
To make the pastry, place
the flour, salt and butter in a
food processor, blitzing until it
resembles fine bread crumbs.
Add the egg and water and blitz
to form the dough. Roll on a
lightly floured bench until 5mm
thick. Line a 23cm quiche or pie
tin. Bake blind for 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven.
Into the tart tin place the
pumpkin, feta and thyme leaves.
Combine the eggs and cream.
Season, then pour over the pumpkin.
Sprinkle over the parmesan.
Bake for 40 minutes or until set in
the middle.
Note: If you don’t have time (or
it’s in your too-hard basket) to
make pastry, buy it.
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
Thursday July 7 2022
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
The facts about home ventilation
Balanced Pressure
vs Positive Pressure
Under the New Zealand Building Code,
all buildings, including residential, need to
be suitably ventilated, either with opening
windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1
states: “The objective of this provision
is to safeguard people from illness or
loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.”
There are many benefits to forced, or
mechanical, ventilation over opening
windows, including warmth, security,
reduction of outside noises and reduction
of condensation.
Traditional domestic ventilation systems
are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in
from outside via the roof space and force
the stale air out through gaps around
windows and doors.
The incoming air
from these systems
has to be heated or
cooled to keep the
house warm in winter
or cool in summer.
The Smooth-Air
HEX390 is a ‘balanced
pressure’ system. It
extracts air from the
house and at the same
time brings in fresh
air. These two streams
of air pass through a
heat exchanger, which
warms incoming air
in winter and cools in
summer if air conditioning is being used.
This means that up to 80% of the energy
which would be wasted using a traditional
positive pressure system is recovered,
resulting in significant energy savings and
therefore lower heating or cooling costs.
Until recently, balanced pressure
ventilation systems have been considerably
more expensive than traditional positive
pressure systems. However, with Smooth-
Air’s unique manufacturing capabilities, a
HEX390 balanced pressure system can be
installed for a similar price as a traditional
positive pressure system.
