Marie Black to stand<br />

Marie Black is standing for the Hurunui<br />

mayoralty again in the upcoming<br />

October Local Government elections.<br />

Mrs Blackwas elected Mayor in 2019,<br />

and believes the strong platform set in<br />

her first three year term has been<br />

influential in guiding the district<br />

through the unprecendented pressure.<br />

‘‘The pastthree years has beena<br />

culmination of business as usual,<br />

leading the district throughsignificant<br />

reformand supporting the district and<br />

its peoplethroughthe global<br />

pandemic,’’ she says.<br />

‘‘We are not immunetofacing<br />

challenges with climatechange, floods,<br />

drought and earthquakes, and Ilook<br />

forward to providing the continuity and<br />

stability of leadershipthrough the next<br />

triennium.’’<br />

Mayor Black believes there is moreto<br />

do, and wants to continue coastal<br />

conversations,advocate further for the<br />

attraction and retention of services<br />

acrossthe district, and she is<br />

particularly focused on healthdelivery<br />

and the re­opening of WaikariHospital.<br />

Waimak CEO resigns<br />

The chief executive of the Waimakariri<br />

District Council Jim Harland has<br />

resigned for health reasons.<br />

He has held the position for 15 months.<br />

Mr Harland’s decision to step down<br />

follows along and distinguished career<br />

in the public sector.<br />

Previously he was Dunedin City<br />

Council chief executive for 11 years,<br />

then moved to The New Zealand<br />

Transport Agency as director of<br />

relationships, prior to taking up the<br />

position with the Waimakariri District<br />

Council.<br />

Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon says<br />

in Mr Harland’s time with the council he<br />

has successively led the organisation<br />

through the Covid­19 pandemic, and the<br />

omicron variant.<br />

‘‘All council services were available<br />

even with rapidly changing Government<br />

directives and significant staff illness.’’<br />

Mr Harland also led improvements to<br />

the Annual Plan process including the<br />

introduction of anew approach to<br />

prioritising the capital expenditure<br />

programme, with afocus on the four well<br />

beings (economic, social, cultural and<br />

environmental) and staff/contracting<br />

resources available.<br />
