It’s Time to Demand Better Water Reform It’s time for Waimakariri to demand better three waters reform, and reject the Government’s one size fits none plan, says Mayor Dan Gordon. The public currently have their one and only opportunity to have their say on the water reforms through the Select Committee process and Mayor Gordon says it’s important that they don’t miss the opportunity. MayorGordonsaidhehas beenapproached by many people unhappywithwhatwas beingsuggested, now it wastimefor everyoneto take action. “This is the last chance that you will get to have a say on what happens to our district’s infrastructure.” “We need to deliver astrong message to the Government that people want abetter form of reform that respects the decades of investment by local communities and enables them to preserve a real say in how their money is spent in future. “Through Communities 4Local Democracy He Hapori mō te Manapori we’ve developed acommon sense model for reform that everyone can get behind and that delivers every outcome sought by the Government. “We’ve workedhardtocreate amodelfor reform that willensurebetterlongterm waterservices forevery community, nowit’s timefor our community to take a fewminutes anddemand better water reform. “We’re also calling on the Government to ensure that local communities are heard by making sure that the select committee meetings aren’t heard solely in Wellington, so when you have the option of speaking in person it’s important to take that opportunity. “If you don’t want to see future water services that are ‘all pay, nosay’ this is your only opportunity to stand up and be counted. “Every person that doesn’t take part in the process will be counted bythe government asbeing in support of this plan.” Submissions are now being accepted on the Water Services Entities Bill and for guidance on how your submission will support our work to deliver better water reform, visit demandbetter.nz 2022 Local Government Elections on the Way Waimakariri District Council is calling on community advocates to think about putting their name in the mix to stand for Mayor, councillor or community board member and about who best represents them. “Election day is Saturday 8October. If you want to make adifference in your community, now is the time to think about standing, or start thinking about who best represents you,” says Deputy Electoral Officer Sarah Nichols. “Every three years the community decide who represents them on the Council and in their community boards. We want as many people as possible to be part of the process, as both candidates and voters.” The Council’s Electoral Officer is holding acandidate information session on 26 July, for persons considering taking the step towards standing in the election and seeking aninsight into what's involved with election rules, as well as what it means to become an elected member. • Tuesday 26 July. 6pm. Nomination forms will be available on the Council website and at Service Centres from 15 July. Candidates must be aNew Zealand citizen and enrolled onthe electoral roll. They don’t need to live inthe area they represent but do need to be nominated by two people enrolled inthe area they wish to represent. Youneed to be on the electoral roll to vote.
